Finding Inner Happiness In Phil Knight s Shoe Dog
Phil Knight s journey to build the most recognized company, logo, and shoe, was not an easy or
short one. Spending nearly two decades with next to zero equity, on the brink of down fall with
one wrong misstep or investment, Knight leads his team, from being a bunch of nobodies, to the
top dog on the world market. In the memoir Shoe Dog, Knight suggest that, finding inner
happiness is one of the greatest accomplishments in life. Knight, as a 24 year old, fresh out of
business school, decides to travel the world, seeking meaning. His crazy idea back in Stanford
comes to mind planning his trip around the world, how the Japanese shoe market could penetrate
the German market, just as how it did with Cameras. Knight expresses this feeling over

Masque Of The Red Death Essay
The Masque of the Red Death was published in May of 1842 by Edgar Allen Poe. It s clearly an
allegorical story, one that can be more narrowly defined as a parable. A parable is defined by
Encyclopedia Britannica as a fable like story which uses humans instead of animals, and draws an
analogy between a particular instance of human behavior...and human behaviour at large . It s
specifically designed to deliver a moral message or lesson, and the one in Masque is that no one
can escape death, no matter what artifices are placed to obstruct it. This is interesting, but the real
magnificence of the tale is in the literary genre in which Poe tells it, which is the Grotesque. The
definition of this term in literature is a bit indistinct, but can be reduced to a couple of key
characteristics: The Grotesque fits in between the real and the fantastic, while being simultaneously
centered between funny and frightening (The Grotesque). Poe s... Show more content on

The goriness and irony of Prince Prospero s revel tell only half the story of the danse macabre. (Di
Renzo, 193)
Harold Bloom argues that the novella isn t grotesque at all, but Arabesque: The Mask of the Red
Death is one of Poe s most memorable Arabesques (Bloom, 13). While this is partially true
because of the psychological aspects of the piece, it s not entirely accurate as a representation of the
entire work.
The creation of terror, the juxtaposition of the real and supernatural, the absurdity and almost
comical aspects, all the poles of what we understand the grotesque to mean have been solidly
touched upon in The Masque of the Red Death. Poe himself refined and encapsulated a coherent
meaning for the grotesque, and the tale stands as a perfect example of what a good representation
of it should strive to

Examples Of Patriotism In Young Philip Malloy
Young Philip Malloy was suspended for 2 days from his high school for being patriotic. If you
think I m lying, I wish I was. You see Philip Malloy goes to Harrison High School and his parents
are Ben and Susan Malloy. Ninth grader Philip Malloy was suspended for being patriotic by
singing the National Anthem. There is no rule against it. First, Philip Malloy was suspended for
patriotism. Philip Malloy said. In school this morning, I was singing the Star Spangled Banner
then the teacher kicked me out (pg 57). This is a direct quote from Philip that he got kicked out of
the room for singing which should not be allowed. The Star Spangled Banner is the National
Anthem. As you may know Ted Griffin is the Malloys neighbor who is running for

Theme Of Self Image In 12 Angry Men
Self image is a largely talked about issue. From negative to positive outlooks, it can be seen in
most magazines, heard on most talk shows, and is mentioned in almost every article on the
internet. The 1957 MGM film Twelve Angry Men compels the characters in the film and the
audiences to view their own self image when making a decision on the guilt of an eighteen year
old boy who is accused of killing his father. By using logic, reflection, and attitude, the movie
shows each of the characters to review their views and beliefs and how they see themselves and
others. During the film, logic was required on everyone s part. They were deciding on an eighteen
year old kid s life! It was not a decision to be made quickly. Mr. Davis realizes this and is the only
one to vote not guilty when taking the first vote (Lumet). Logic came into play because Mr.
Davis thought logically about all of the evidence presented and because of this he felt that there
was a reasonable doubt and could therefore, not sentence the young man. Throughout the rest of
the film, we see more of the men thinking logically, for example, when Juror Nine realizes that
the woman who claims she witnessed the murder, wore glasses and would not have been able to
clearly see the boy if she claimed to be laying in bed trying to fall asleep. Another example is
when juror number five, who grew up in the same area of town that the defense did, shows the
proper way of using a switchbladeknife, making a logical

Lyndon B. Johnson s Involvement In The Vietnam War
The history of the Vietnam War had a violent beginning. Before the assassination of President
Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson had little to no involvement in the Vietnam conflict. Beforehand the
United States had mainly sent supplies and aid to South Vietnam against North Vietnam. After the
assassination of both president Kennedy and the President of South Vietnam, the war became
inevitable.
After becoming President, Johnson had to focus on Vietnam and the spread of communism. The
uprisings in South Vietnam after the assassination led Johnson to have more force than Kennedy
ever did. The tipping point was the gulf of Tonkin incident. Two destroyers were attacked in the gulf
of Tonkin off of Vietnam. This led to the gulf of Tonkin resolution. This joint resolution enacted by
Congress gave the President power to use military force without a declaration of war. After the gulf
incident Johnson s response to the public stated that he would not commit American troops to the
ground to fight a foreign war. Shortly after the president learned that South Vietnam was losing and
couldn t even protect United States establishments stationed there. After bombing key points in
North Vietnam, Johnson started to escalate and sent ground troops in. From that moment on

that American would end up like the French defeat in the 1950 s in Asia. Like the French he

The Panama Canal Between 1904 And 1914
1502, Panama was explored and discovered by Columbus and then later on by Balboa in 1513.
In the 16th Century, Panama was probed by Spain and Spanish became its official language. In
1821, Panama joined the Republic of Gran Colombia; a joint union of Colombia, Ecuador, and
Venezuela. In the colonial days, to be able to import and export goods between South and Central
America, they have to operate through Panama. 1903 a treaty was signed between Panama and the

Malcolm Gladwell s Theory Of The Tipping Point
Typically ranging from 100 to 400 square feet, tiny houses could easily be mistaken for a small
shed or plentiful sized walk in closet (Corson). Tiny houses are an alternative to modern housing
that can be taken on the go, similar to the transportable capabilities of an RV or mobile home. In
order to understand why tiny houses boomed in popularity since 2014, Malcolm Gladwell s theory
of the Tipping Point can be used to analyze how the movement sparked. The rise in interest of the
tiny houseis accredited to the context in which it develops, the salesmen and connectors that spread
the tiny house movement, and the many aspects that allow tiny houses to stick with their audience.
The tiny house movement spreads partially due to various environmental ... Show more content on

One of the three, known as the Connector, acts as a living wire who connects themselves to many
different worlds and subcultures and niches (Gladwell). In the tiny house epidemic, many
connectors in the form of bigger companies help project the tiny house lifestyle. Two different
television networks, HGTV and FYI, produced popular shows that informed the public what tiny
houses looked like and what accommodations they came with, of those being Tiny House Big
Living, Tiny House Hunters, Tiny House Nation, and Tiny House World. Each of the shows first
aired in late 2014, except for Tiny House World which came in late 2015 (Tiny House, Big living,
Tiny House Hunters, Tiny House Nation, Tiny House World). By producing a tv show about tiny
houses, whether the show follows contractors, people who build the house themselves, or real estate
agents that sell to a prospective buyers, HGTV and FYI easily allow every household with a
television set to explore a growing movement that encourages finding freedom by thinking big on
living small (St. Louis Sanchez). In addition to bringing the tiny movement into the house of their
audience, the show producers also aim to be salesmen. According to Malcolm Gladwell, the
salesmen work to convince others that they need something they never knew about before
(Gladwell). These shows make money off of every episode they put out, and they do so in hopes
that the same audience will return with more numbers in order to watch their show. HGTV and FYI
produce these shows that highlight the price, process, and advantages of being apart of the
movement. Similar tactics are shown outside of the weekly television shows in community events,
such as the Tiny House Jamboree. The jamboree is an annual event in which prospective buyers,
current owners, and certain builders can explore and connect with

The Power Of Edison s Unconventional Tactics Of Thomas...
Thomas Alva Edison possessed a unique intellectual toolbox. His tool filled mind provided a
plethora of unconventional methods which enabled him to succeed. At an early age, Edison learned
that he could manipulate people, sometimes by withholding the truth to avoid confrontation (Conot
5). Likewise, he would unconventionally manipulate his experiments or audience to achieve an
anticipated result (Unconventional Tactics...). A perfect example is the time Edison publicly
executed an elephant, named Topsy, in an aggressive effort to maintain success. In the early 1900 s,
the standard for electricity known as direct current (DC), invented by Edison, reigned supreme. This
invention consistently generated Edison a substantial amount of revenue for discovering it. The
reason Edison went to the extremity of electrocuting an elephant was to both demonstrate a point,
but more importantly, vanquish his two rival innovators, George Westinghouse and Nicola Tesla.
The two rivals posed a great threat to Edison s monopoly and an even greater threat to his rising
popularity. Their weapon of choice? The newly discovered form of electricity called alternating
current(AC) (Long). Edison argued that their AC would be infinitely more dangerous to use than
his DC, but more importantly, he feared mankind would begin a conversion towards AC
(Chandler). In a desperate and very unconventional attempt to discredit his two rival innovators and
their form of electricity, Edison released 6,600 volts of

A Country Is Authoritarian Or Democratic Is Not A Choice
A country being authoritarian or democratic is not a choice; it s a result of the policies the country
makes. There is no one factor that makes a country democratic or authoritarian, but the degree of
capitalism that is implemented in a country is the most effective factor in determining a countries
regime type. Australia and North Korea are two countries, which have two completely different
regime types and economies. Using these countries as examples, I will show how capitalismis the
most important factor in the regime type of any country that exists in the world today.
I will first give a brief introduction of each of the two countries mentioned. Then, I will describe
what it means for a country to be democratic and compare the two countries chose to those
requirements. I will then go into reasons of how the degree capitalism is used affects the country s
regime type. I will use
Australia is a country that has a democratic regime and a capitalist economy. According to the
Freedom House Freedom in the World Report of 2014, which rates countries freedom on a scale
of one to seven, Australia has a perfect 1.0 (Australia). This means that Australia is a full and free
country. On the other hand, North Korea has an authoritarian regime and a very tightly closed
economy. North Korea s score in the Freedom House report is a 7.0(North Korea). This score
means that the country is not free and that the people do not have as many rights as free countries
do. With the two

Sociological Inquiry Documents How Places Are Shaped By...
Introduction A growing line of sociological inquiry documents how places are shaped by the
meanings residents construct and attach to them. Specifically, scholars have studied the symbolic
relationship between people and places and the ways that persons invest places with meaning and
value in order to make sense of their world (Borer, 2006, p. 180). These meanings have the power
to direct how and why people move to a place, how they invest their time and money, and the ways
in which they do or do not engage in civic and political action (Firey, 1945; Bell, 1994; Milligan,
1998; Paulsen, 2004; Alkon and Traugot, 2008; Kaufman and Kaliner, 2011). Because of this, it is
central to uncover how meanings are made, who specifically makes them, and how they direct
action on the ground. Questions about the sources and consequences of the meanings residents
construct are particularly salient in communities that experience an influx of new residents. The
meanings new residents attach to place do not always align with those of the longtime residents of
a community or neighborhood. The different race, class, and socioeconomic statuses of the new and
longtime residents further exacerbate these contestations. For instance, affluent newcomers often
hold the power to shape the future of the neighborhood, either by valuing the higher status local
group and uncoupling the community from the longtime residents and poor and minority groups

The Dark Knight And The Departed Film Analysis
Significant Connections
A significant connection between the four films The Dark Knight directed by Christopher Nolan,
The Departed directed by Martin Scorsese, The Prestige directed by Christopher Nolan and Gone
Girl directed by David Fincher is the way in which the directors have manipulated the narrative
structure to engage the audience in contrasting ways. Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese used
equally weighted protagonists and antagonists in the films The Dark Knight and The Departed to
create the narrative structure in a sense so that the audience feels equally engaged by both
characters. Christopher Nolan and David Fincher have manipulated the narrative structure in the
films The Prestige and Gone Girl to expose a hidden ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, when The Joker captured Rachel and Harvey Dent, Batman is given the option to
save only one of the two most important people in his life. This reinforces the idea of Batman s
strength becoming his greatest weakness by The Joker applying pressure to Batman, forcing him
to question his own morality. The Joker makes it clear that the protagonist and the antagonist in
The Dark Knight are equally weighted, they rely on each other to either cause chaos or to stop
chaos. Kill you? I don t want to kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off
mob dealers? No, no, you... You complete me.
In addition to the way Christopher Nolan has directed The Dark Knight, Martin Scorsese has
directed The Departed by using equally weighted protagonists and antagonists much like
Christopher Nolan has. Leonardo DiCaprio has been cast as the fundamental protagonist, Billy
Costigan and Matt Damon has been cast as the central antagonist, Colin Sullivan in the film The

vulnerability in his life. I m going f*cking nuts, man. I can t be someone else every f*cking day. It

The Issues Of The Conflict
Conflict is rarely unavoidable when in close relationships. As the text states, people most commonly
handle conflict in one of five ways: accommodation, avoidance, collaboration, competition, or
reactivity. There are positive and negative possibilities of outcomes from using any of the five
approaches to handling conflict (262). Accommodation involves an individual s abandonment of his
/her own goals to the desires of the other individual, whereas avoidance, a lose lose conflict style,
involves various techniques that involve lower risk to the individual than direct confrontation.
Collaboration and competition differ mainly over the value of personal needs or goals.
Collaboration involves using compromise, where every person involved are willing to alter his/her
views to reach a solution to the conflict. Competition is a more direct approach involving a clash
of goals which exists because one will pursue their own goals without regard for others. Reactivity
is characterized as nonstrategic and is communicated in a negative way. I argue the combination of
collaborating and avoiding is an effective combination because in order for an individual to
effectively and efficiently solve problems individuals must know when to redirect conversation to a
more relevant topic and have the ability to take the emotionout of problem solving.
My results showed my number one conflict style is collaborating (9), followed by avoiding (8) and
compromising (6). Accommodating (4) and

John Dalton was an English chemist, physicist, and meteorologist. He is best known for his
pioneering work in the development of modern atomic theory; and his research into color blindness,
sometimes referred to as Daltonism, in his honor.
English chemist s and physicist, was born September 6, 1766 at Eagles field. His father, Joseph
Dalton, was a weaver who, with his wife had three children; Jonathan, John and Mary. John took

So in 1794, he wrote his first scientific paper which he called: Extraordinary Facts Relating to the
Vision of Colors
This was the first ever paper to discuss color blindness. Dalton had realized the condition was
hereditary, because he and other members of his family had it. Ultimately, Dalton s theory for color
blindness was wrong, but as he was the first person ever to research it, the condition became known
as Daltonism (famousscientists.org NP). The Daltons research papers changes, he began to study
and observe the physical sciences: heat conduction, gas expansion by heat, the properties of light,
the aurora borealis, and meteorology. These studies helped him establish The Atomic Theory.
Dalton s atomic theory proposed that all matter was composed of atoms, indivisible and
indestructible building blocks. While all atoms of an element were identical, different elements had

How Does Hamlet Have Feigned Madness
I believe that Hamlet claimed to have feigned madness because then the suspicion of what he is
planning, the revenge he is planning, wont seem so clear to the others. Hamlet made it seem like
he was going mad so people would just brush off any weird or maddening comments or actions
that he has and will do in the act of revenge for his fathers death. I believe this because after Hamlet
talks to the ghostof his father he says, I ll wipe away all trivial fond records, all saws of books, all
forms, all pressures past that youth and observation copied there, and thy commandment all alone
shall live within the book and volume of my brain, (Act I, Scene V). After talking to his fathers
ghost, Hamlet decides that nothing matters in life other than to seek revenge for his father s
murder. As he stated, he clears his brain of everything but that and sets him plan into motion to kill
his uncle. As well as the appearance of insanity can help him achieve his goal, by giving him a

He is just so determined for revenge that he doesn t care about the casualties that he takes down

rage and madness he s been portraying. He realizes then that he may have gone too far and not
cared about who he will be taking down with him to get revenge, but I feel that only strengthens
his want of revenge. When Hamlet finds out that Ophelia s the one to be buried, it angers him and

Phonology Of Grammar And Syntax
Grammar and syntax are in common because with syntax you are also using grammar. Knowing
the parts of speech in grammar goes hand and hand with syntax. The parts of speech are: Nouns
(person, place, thing, or idea), Verbs (action or being), Prepositions (time, place, or position),
Adjectives (describes nouns and pronouns), Adverbs (describes verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs),
Conjunctions (join words, phrases, or sentences), Interjections (express emotion or are fillers in
sentences), and Pronouns (take the place of nouns) are very important in both syntax and grammar
(Lunsford, 2013, pp.294 302). In the tree diagram, there are also functional categories and syntactic
categories that are both grammar and syntax related.
Phonetics and Phonology Analysis Phonetics is the study of speech sounds and everything can be
measured in phonetics. The science of phonetics attempts to describe all of the sounds used in all
languages (Fromkin, 2014, p.192). Articulatory, acoustic, and auditory are all part of speech
sounds. Articulatory phonetics is the way that sounds of language are produced through the vocal
tract. Acoustic phonetics is how sound waves of the sounds that we make, and auditory phonetics
is the sound waves that are received when we hear sounds. Orthography is the way that words are
spelled and not necessarily how they are pronounced. In orthography, there can be many words
spelled different, but the sounds may sound the same. The sound of these letters can all

The theme is played today between parents it is which is the best option for their children

Great Britain And The European Union
The recent decision of Great Britain to leave the European Union coincides with the recent election
of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States. Both events can be explained by using
economic and cultural arguments. In order to fully understand these occurrences, one must
understand the economic anxiety as well as the anti globalisation sentiment that surrounded the
Brexit movement. Trump s candidacy involves some of the same aspects, yet Trump s voter
demographic, the white, working class, must also be studied. In the end, it can be determined that
there is arguably more of a cultural reasoning to these incidences.
The instances of Great Britain s exit from the EU and the election of Donald Trump were both so
originally downplayed that when both possibilities came to light, the world was in shock and
awe. June 23, 2016 was the first shock as Great Britain held a referendum in order to decide the
question of whether or not the country should remain within the European Union. Brexit was the
winning vote. Political elites had been defeated and the complaints of the voters were heard. These
complaints stemmed from economic anxiety within the country and the demise of the support of
globalisation. The Economist article, Drawbridges Up , describes the way in which voters wished
to take control of borders once again in order to slow the flow of immigrants and refugees.
The Trump candidacy shares some of the same fundamental aspects of Brexit yet Trumps true rise to

The difference between medieval and early modern is one...
The medieval and early modern periods were eras with distinctive issues and ideals. Some of
their key themes were very similar, such as the importance of religion and the role it played in
everyday life, while other matters were unique to their time, such as the medieval selling of
indulgences, or the early modern Reformation of the Church. These examples illustrate clearly the
mixture of change and stasis in the two ages, as a subject shared by both periods yielded so great
a diversity of issues. The distinction of the eras makes it evident that some change did occur, but as
the period of time between them was not very great, the change must be limited. Everyman and Dr

rituals. Marlowe dresses Mephostophilis in the habit of an old Franciscan friar, as Faustus
comments That holy shape becomes a devil best, illustrating an air of contempt for the Catholic
clergy. He further associates Catholicism with evil and devilry as he conjures Mephostophilis by
chanting in Latin, the language of the Catholic Church. This mockery of Catholicism may be
testament to contemporary social attitudes rather than the personal view of Marlowe himself. In the
medieval era, it was highly uncommon for anybody to speak out against the Church, either through
fear or because it was all they knew, but the Reformation encouraged writers to criticise the papacy
and the earlier Church, often as a form of public entertainment. Writers often allied Catholic
characters with themes of idiocy or ineptitude, as Marlowe does in his portrayal of Pope Adrian as
a humourless megalomaniac, void...of commonsense . Marlowe manipulated the public disdain of
Catholicism to criticise established religion in general, challenging many commonly held views,
especially regarding forgiveness and salvation. Everyman s central theme suggests that God s mercy

Love And Hate In The Story Of An Hour
Love and hate are both very powerful emotions. The abundance one can feel inside when feeling
them can be overwhelming at times. I think everyone can relate to the feeling when you love
someone so much you would do anything and everything for them. We can also understand that
feeling when you can t even stand the thought of someone being in the same room of you. When
we look at what emotionis more powerful, I think hate is stronger than love. The reason being is
that love can quickly turn to hate, but hate doesn t change to love very fast, if at all. I think
Othello is a great example of this. His love for his wife, turned to hate so fast because he thought
she was cheating on him. He murdered his wife in pure cold blood which shows how hate can be
such a powerful emotion that it can actually cause someone to want to commit murder. The feeling
of love and hate can change someone, and they both can be very powerful. However, I think that
hate is an emotion unlike no other in which the feeling is very stable, in the since that it is very
hard to change someone s mind about you when they hate you.
In the short story The Story of an Hour a lady talks about the feeling after her husband passed
away. She described the feeling of being set free as she said There was a feverish triumph in her
eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory (Schlilib, 429). This shows how
someone can fall out of love. Maybe she didn t hate him, but she definitely had some

Female Athlete Triad Essay
The female athlete triad is a health condition in which active women experience three inter related
disorders due to unhealthy body weight and eating habits. In the case of the triad, the word active
refers to females who display moderate to high intensity levels of performance. The rate of
performance must be high in order to counterbalance the decrease in calorie intake. Females who
perform at a high intensity are at risk for the triad since they do not take in enough calories to fulfill
the amount expended. The three disorders within the female athlete triadare osteoporosis, disordered
eating, and menstrual dysfunction. Not all females experience all three of the conditions, however
new data has indicated that even having one or... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Low bone mineral density can result in stress fractures within a female s body (6). Female athletes
with menstrual dysfunction often display low levels of the reproductive hormones estrogen and
progesterone. When the levels of these hormones are low, it is difficult for bones to retain calcium
which causes a gradual loss of bone mass. It has been proven that when comparing amenorrhic
athletes to athletes with regular menstrual cycles, the bone mineral density if reduced by 14% in
amenorrhic athletes and 27% in regular athletic women (7). All three conditions result in serious
health and body conditions which can decrease a female s ability to participate in physical
activities. The female athlete triad is considered to be a significant health concern. In relation to the
female athlete triad, some women are more prone to the condition than others. Sports that
emphasize performance based on weight specifications increase the prevalence of the female athlete
triad. Women who participate in sports such as ballet, figure skating, gymnastics, diving, and other
aesthetic component sports have a higher risk of developing aspects of the female athlete triad in
addition to women who participate in sports that involve weight classes such as tae kwon do, judo,
wrestling, rowing, and equestrian (6). Most female athletes who participate in either high intensity
or endurance exercise have a greater chance of developing the triad. Studies have shown that

The Man I Killed by Tim O Brien
In modern war... you will die like a dog for no good reason. Ernest Hemingway. War is many
things. It may be many different things depending on each individual. Many soldiers get trained so
their mentality is to characterize their opponents as less than human, so their lives lose all worth.
Some soldiers however, are not prepared for this, even though they have been trained. One thing is
training for it, another thing is actually killing a humanbeing. As they killmore people, it becomes
normalized for them. All they have seen changes their mind, while all of their dreams get swept
aside by bloody hands of the hypnotized while they carry the cross of homicide. But why kill
other strangers? What s in it for the soldiers? War feeds the rich while it buries the poor. Rich
people are power hungry, selling soldiers in human grocery store, using them as their little puppets
who obey their master, making them go around killing each other in order to determine who is
right, but in the end, war determines who is left. The Man I Killed by Tim O Brien shows how
soldiers who commit violence become traumatized and how that changes over time.
At the beginning of the story the narrator, Tim, gets affected by committing an act of violence
when he was in the Vietnam War, killing an enemy Vietnamese soldier. Many thoughts began
flowing in his head, all the time thinking about the man he killed. He had been born, maybe, in

Television, Television And Public Places
1a. It is very important to draw comparison between the internet, library, television and public
places as a result of the fact the internet can also be considered or viewed as a public place where
information can be obtained freely at any point in time, and this makes it very important to know
what the law says about this disseminating information to the general public with respect to the
first amendment. Looking at this various medium i.e libraries, television and public places and
what the law stipulates according to the United State constitution the first amendment expressly
forbids against depriving citizens their right to freedom of speech, of press, right to assemble
and petition the government. But in this case emphasis is placed on the freedom of speech. The
entire medium stated above has differences between them and the difference between them how
the freedom of speech law applies to each one of them, for example the library consist of various
material including the press, which has been granted lots flexibility when it comes to freedom of
speech been the oldest media but the content available in the library is still controlled by the
owner of the library so that it does not infringe on any law. Likewise the television the government
has set up various body to control what is being aired to the general public, but it does not have
any control of privately owned television providers such as charter, dish etc. 1b. The internet is

3. Roland Barthes developed a range of semiotic tools to analyse the cultural meanings that are
conveyed in advertising images, in a particular context. Using these semiotic tools, select and
analyse four magazine adverts.
This essay will discuss Roland Barthes ideas and his semiotic tools, and will also look at how
Barthes uses these tools to analyse images and how they make us think.
Roland Barthes was a French philosopher who wrote many books about the literary theory and
semiotics. His writing has influenced and helped shape many postmodern theories. His most
famous book Death of the author explains his theory on visual analysis. Barthes says that when we
see an image, the author or creator of the image does not matter. Each individual person will find a
meaning from that image. We all analyse images on our own.
The meaning of an image lies with the audience. The author is not the authority on the meaning
of the image. Although we are all quite similar in what we get from an image, different people
will get different meanings. This is due to the experiences we have had throughout life. Barthes
says no object has a natural meaning. (Barthes, 1967 p.25) Meanings are defined by culture, so
for example, if in the UK someone does the thumbs up , we take this to mean that everything is
okay, but if someone does it whilst standing at the side of the road, it means they want a lift, and in
scuba diving it means you want to go up to the surface.

Do The Right Thing
Spike Lee s movie Do the Right Thing portrays a time in American history when the post civil
rights movement was still fresh in everyone s mind. It is 1989, and Martin Luther King Jr and
Malcolm X have placed their stamp on the country. While MLK preached for peace, Malcom X
wanted the people to fight back in self defense. This movie portrays these two views side by side
through several different scenes.
The movie is set in the black community of Bedford Stuyevesant on the hottest day of the year.
The neighborhood DJ Love Daddy opens the stage, telling everyone to wake up , and that it will be
a hot, hot day. The temperature seems to be a frequently talked about subject in the beginning of the
film, suggesting that something is bound to happen as heat symbolizes anger and violence. There
are many little instances of racial problems that lead up to the big finale, proving that, while the
civil rights movement had ended, race was still and still is a part of American culture. Mookie, the
film s main character, works at Sal s pizzeria with Sal, Pino, and Vito. While this is a mainly
African American neighborhood, Sal and his family are American Italians . They take great pride
in this, and even have a wall of fame commemorating their heritage. Buggin Out sees this wall
and takes offense to it. He asks Sal Why are there no brothers on the wall? since they live in a
mainly black community. Sal replies that it is his business, and he decides who goes up on the wall.

Why Is Mary Tudor Powerful
During Mary Tudor s reign England was in terror because she was ruthless in her power. She was
one of the most powerful and scary women in English history in my opinion. All for one main
reason, She was not afraid of to do what she wanted to do. When she wanted something done it
was done or the person she told to do so would more than likely get their life taken. Mary Tudor
was born on the 18th of February in 1516. In Place of Placentia in Greenwich England. She was
the third child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Greenwich is just five miles out of
London. King Henry VIII created the Church of England in 1536 as a result of a dispute with the

mistress. Henry s marital history started under a cloud of suspicion, as his marriage to Catherine of

Essay On Nanoswimmers
Wirelessly controlled nanoscale robots can be used for in vitro and in vivo biochemical
application and are usually based on (or mimic) the rotary motion of helical bacterial flagella for
propulsion. However, researchers still have not been able to create a man made nanohelix that has
the ability to change its geometry in response to multiple environmental factor. In other words, it
cannot adapt. Thus, a team of researchers led by Kim, examine the bacterial flagella and how they
change their helical form in response to environmental stimuli by studying three flagellar forms.
The team of researches were able to show that the ability to steer the devices and induce flagellar

The normal run tumble behavior observed in swimming chemotaxis was mainly suppressed and
the cells were continuously reoriented by random jostling by their neighbors which randomized
their directions in a few tenths of a second. On the other hand, at the edge of the swarm, cells
usually paused and then swam back toward the center of the swarm or along its edge. Hence, the
properties of the interior of the monolayer was different than the properties of its outer edge. Thus,
the local alignment among cells was accomplished by cell body collision and short range
hydrodynamic interactions.
While there s a fairly good understanding of how bacteria regulate, assemble and rotate their
flagella to swim in liquid media, little is still known about how some bacteria is able to use their
flagella in order to move over the tops of solids otherwise known as swarming. Thus, Kearns
studied what is needed in swarming motility in diverse bacterial model systems such as an increase
in the number of flagella per cell, secretion of a surfactant to reduce surface tension for spreading
and movement in multicellular groups. Therefore, Kearns was able to determine that swarming
motility generally requires an energy rich, solid medium, however, the specific conditions that
support swarming depends on the organism in question. Swarming was enhanced by high growth
rates that may account for

The park s story is worth retelling: The bisecting of the Barrio Logan community by I 5 and the
Coronado Bridge, ending in a concrete roof supported by large gray pillars, replaced at least 1,500
families. With a society of 20,000 in its heyday in the 1940s, the historic neighborhood was rezoned
as industrial in the 1950s, ushering in junkyards, auto wrecking operations, plating and chemical
companies, and now, a legacy of environmental and air condition issues.
In 1967, community leaders began demanding a neighborhood park under the bridge. When the
California Highway Patrol started building a substation there, hundreds of residents formed a
human shield to stop construction. They displayed signs in Spanish with statements like, More
houses, fewer junkyards, and they hoisted a Chicano flag from a telephone pole.

When the pressure, is not frequently relived, the damage is caused and a pressure ulcer occurs.
Judy waterlow (1985) introduced the Waterlow Score, whilst working as a clinical nurse, she
designed this as a tool for her students to use as a guidance, for a risk assessment tool, to help in
maintaining skin integrity. Waterlow (1985) suggests, that as a nurse professional, we can only use
this as a guide, we must also use our own judgment, in defining the risks of the patient in our care.
The cost implications to treatment of pressure ulcer care is expensive, costing the national
healthcare service provider millions, with additional longer stay in hospital, the cost of each
pressure ulcer and even reconstructive surgery, also with the additional suffering, of the patient at
hand, the importance of minimizing the risks to pressure ulcer prevention, is imperative. Not only

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Crime Insurance
There are a number of threats and vulnerabilities that every business owner has to deal with, in
order to ensure the business s survival and success, irrespective of the size, scale and industry of
the company. The vulnerability resulting from various types of internal and external crimes
committed against the business is one such prime risk that needs to be addressed with due
precaution and precision. Even if a business is well protected with sufficient coverage offered by
its commercial liability insurancepolicy, there are definite scopes of multiple crimes that are not part
of that protection and hence the business would continue to be at risk.

Apartheid intimidated the government more than weapons and violence could because of the
powerful meaning behind each song that unified and strengthened the resistance. Artists all over

The earliest variations of Nkosi Sikelel Afrika , like the upbeat Masowe Apostles and the slower
Marankes, inspired many artists to do the same. Some used the lyrics or melody to add to their
own original songs, like the aggressive rap by Prophets of da City and Dan Moyane s fusion of
the song s lyrics with the melody of Die Stem Van Suid Afrika , South Africa s national anthem
during the Apartheid. Others used the song as inspiration for songs with similar lyrics, like Nkosi
Yethu by Isaian Shembe and Mwari Komberera Africa by John Maranke. Despite being banned by
the government, Nkosi Sikelel Afrika continued to be sung throughout the Apartheid and became
so important that it was named the national anthem of South Africa at the end of the Apartheid.
Although Nkosi Sikelel Afrika was originally a religious hymn, the lyrics had a very prominent
political connotation. The song was not a revolutionary song in the traditional sense, but a prayer
for freedom and equality. The meaning of the lyrics, shown below, called for the Lord to help the
people. The seven additional verses, especially the last one, transformed the song from a religious
hymn to a song calling for hope and the power to fight back. Although the words do not directly
attack the government, they are much more powerful to the people of South Africa than any
revolutionary song. Lord, bless Africa

Why College Students Are Not Success In College
Through the years in America, more students in each generation of college are being successful
and finishing college. The latest data show that just 40 percent of Americans have finished an
associate s degree or above, while an additional 22 percent attend some college but failed to
graduate (Kelly, p.1). The 22 percent of college students who are failing to graduate, could be the
college students who are not being successful in college. There are many reasons why students are
not successful in college. Some main reasons students are not successful in college are typical
because of drugs, stress, time managementand procrastination, lack of desire and persistence and
also poor self esteem and lack of self confidence. One reason why students are not successful in
college is that of drugs. When students leave their homes to go off to college they meet new
people, and experience overjoy of new freedom. When students notice that they are experiencing
new freedom, they try new and different things. One of the main things students try that are new
and different, depending on where the student is from, are drugs. Students use drugs for a lot of
different reasons. Students use drugs to cope with stress, try to maintain course load, and they
are influenced by peer pressure. In college, drugs are taken too far once students start to use
them. Those who are enrolled in a full time college program are twice as likely to abuse drugs
and alcohol than those who don t attend college (College students and Drug Abuse). The students
who abuse drugs in college are the students that are normally not successful in college. The drugs
take over the mind and students become unfocused and behind in school work, which leads to
students failing out of college. Another reason why students are not successful in college is that of
stress. Relationships, family issues and cost of tuition are stress related factors that are dealt with a
college student. The America Institute of the street website says, a 2008 mental health study by the
Associated Press and mtvU eight in 10 college students say they have experienced stress in their
daily lives over the past three months (Stress in College Students p. 1). The college that I

In Augustine s On Free Choice of the Will he explains that the human soul is predisposed to
have a good will and that it is a will by which we desire to live upright and honorable lives and to

must live according to our good will. To follow our good will we must live according to the four
main virtues in life: prudence, fortitude, temperance, and justice. He defines prudence as having the
knowledge of what is to be desired and what is to be avoided (Augustine 20, 1993). Augustine

Free Choice of the Will Evodius says that, [he] acknowledges that all four virtues that
[Augustine] just described, ... are present in those who love their own good will and value it
highly (Augustine 21, 1993). Here Evodius is stating that by living with these four virtues we
are able to live a happy life that is in accordance with our good will. Augustine states that to have
a good will is to have something far more valuable than all earthly kingdoms and pleasures...
(Augustine 20, 1993). Here he is saying that to be happy in life you must have more than just
temporary possessions such as money or health, Augustine defines these possessions as temporal
objects. In order to have a good will we must make a distinction between temporal objects and
eternal objects; he explains these differences in the temporal and eternal laws. The eternal law
demands that we purify our love by turning it away from temporal things and toward what is eternal

Blade Faults in Gas Turbines
Gas turbines are often exposed to ingestion of particles suspended in the air such as dust, ash, salt,
ice, water droplets, and sand particles during operation. These particles are the most important
factor that cause blade fault in all types of gas turbines. The most common types of blade fault are
fouling, erosion, tip clearance increase, water ingestion, and foreign object damage (FOD) [1].
Most of mentioned cases cause roughness over the blade surfaces that deteriorate the gas turbine
performance. Different numerical methods were used to solve the gas turbine cascade flow field
in recent years. In most of these studies, the quasi three dimensional Navier Stokes analysis is
used. On the other hand, in some studies the flow fields were experimentally tested. Sheets of
sandpaper with different equivalent sand grain roughness heights have been used by researchers to
produce roughness on surface of gas turbine blades placed in a wind tunnel and applying flow
conditions of their case.
1.1 Experimental work
Yun et al. [2] used sheets of sandpapers with equivalent sand grain roughness heights of 106 and
400 micrometers. The performance tests have been conducted in a low speed, single stage, axial
flow turbine having roughened blades. They showed that for blades with roughnesses of the fully
rough regime (400 ), the normalized efficiency decreases by 11 percent for stator vanes and 8
percent for rotor blades. For blades having a roughness in the transitionally rough regime (106

The Healthcare Plan Of Clinton
THE HEALTHCARE PLAN OF CLINTON Clinton s Healthcare Plan: the Reasons Why It Failed
In the United States the issue of government funded healthcare programs has always been one of
importance drawing attentions of many and involving myriads of debate sessions. Still now people
take quite interest in dissecting and finally commenting on why Obamacare is a success and why
Clintoncare/Hillarycare was not. But whatever may be the reason behind such indulgence, it must
be analyzed why such a welfare effort like President Clinton s healthcare plan ultimately failed
even though having some great features which, if implemented properly, would have changed the
course of healthcare policies in the United States for a considerable period of... Show more content

Congress, as one of the key players, was seriously considering plans to provide universal health
coverage on one hand, and physicians, big businesses, and Republican lawmakers, on the other
hand, as various interest groups opposing the Congress, were more interested in blocking the
proposals of the Congress (Bok, 1998). The situation was a dilemmatic one and some
reformation was needed. Clinton felt the nerve of the majority of the populace who were in favor
of healthcare reform and hence, he made healthcare a primary weapon in his election campaigns.
With his win the issue of healthcare reform came to forefront. It must be noted that gradually
American businesses were singing in the tune of Clinton due to the fear of losing further
businesses due to their disadvantageous position fueled by the rising health costs in the United
States and Growing segments of the medical community expresses a desire to consider reforms;
even hospitals seemed interested in some scheme that would spare them the heavy burden of
giving free medical care to the uninsured (Bok, 1998). Moreover, Clinton was obliged to introduce
a healthcare reform policy also due to the fact that large majorities of the public rated health care
reform among the most urgent problems facing the nation and voiced support for a plan that would
provide medical insurance for all Americans (Bok, 1998). After getting elected as the

China: Torn Apart Or Mended By The Rule Of Mao Zedong
There is controversy whether the rule of Mao Zedong was beneficial or destructive, though by
looking into the depths of history the answer is revealed. As Mao Zedong took control over China
on October 1, 1949, he immediately installed many reformations to China s economy, culture, and
government. These reformations proved to be devastating towards the people of China. After
decolonization Mao Zedong s enforcement of communism and international isolation lead China
into attempting industrialization by imposing labor intensive methods, and preventing China from
technologically advancing.
During the beginning of the twentieth century China had become a republic after the rule of Sun ...

However, Chiang s decision to focus his military on the Communists turned out to be a poor choice
because, while the Chinese were occupied with their internal conflicts, the Japanese set up the
puppet state of Manchukuo in 1932 ( China ). The invasion of Japan was devastating for China;
civilians were murdered, raped, tortured, military groups were destroyed, and the government went
bankrupt. The Sino Japanese war finally ended when Tokyo surrendered to the Allies in 1945 at the
end of World War II (Kenley, Republican China ). This lead to the continuation of conflict between
the Guomindang and the Communists. The war turned in favor of the communists, forcing Chiang
and his followers to retreat to the island province of Taiwan (Kenley, Republican China ). On
October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the People s Republic of China after taking domination
over China s mainland (Kenley, Republican China ). Mao Zedong continued to rule China under
Communist rule and started to transform the former Republican China.
Due to Mao s aspirations of industrialization and modernization, the Chinese leader drastically
devastated the working class by enforcing collectivization and labor intensive methods. In order to
achieve Mao s vision, to forbid privately owned plots and to push all farmers into agricultural
collectives Mao,

Becoming A Law Enforcement Officer Essay
The decision to become a law enforcement officer came to me around age eighteen. Since then,
my behavior has been appropriate, and of high standard. However, I did a few things during my
teenage years that I am not proud of. When I was fifteen I stole an MP3 player from another
student at my high school and then shoplifted a pair of earphones from a local Walmart. A year
later I shoplifted a pack of condoms from the same Walmart. These events have been haunting me
ever since, and have changed the way I look at things compared to when I was a teenage kid. I
was attending Kofa High Schoolthe first time I stole something of value. It was during class, we
had just gone out of the classroom as a group and for some reason I went back into the class to
grab something out of my backpack. When I was leaving the room I saw the MP3 player on a
mesh pocket on one of the backpacks. I thought to myself for a... Show more content on

At age sixteen my girlfriend and I were beginning to want to have sex. I knew I needed to wear
protection, for I thought that she would get pregnant if we did anything more than kiss. At that
age I thought I was ready for sex; however, I was not ready to go up to the cash register to pay for
condoms. The thought of paying for condoms filled me with dread, especially because I wasn t
sure on their policies of selling condoms to minors. It sounds ignorant to me now, but the teenage
me was not sure about the legality of buying condoms at age sixteen and the thought of being the
center of attention at the cash register was just dreadful. I knew I definitely needed protection
but I was too scared to buy it, so I took three condoms out of a pack and walked out of the store
with the condoms in my pocket. Just like with the earphones, I went back to Walmart years later,
bought a pack of condoms, and then left them behind. I know it doesn t make up for what I did,
but it felt good to do

Brooke Friday
For this assignment, I shadowed Brooke Friday, an Assistant Stage Manager for the DPA
production of Midsummer Night s Dream, a radio show produced in the Studio Theatre. The day
I visited was a dress rehearsal a couple of days before opening. For this production, Friday had
many responsibilities to make sure the rehearsal process ran smoothly. Although she never had to
make any blocking notes (the actors stood in front of microphones for the entirety of the show),
she had to take numerous line notes. She also had to help set up and tear down the microphones,
chairs, and the foley, the equipment used for sound effects. Lastly, she had to time the production.
She had to time the entire run time along with the time for each scene. She told me that this was
information for the editors when they go back and look at the recordings I feel her most important
job was taking line notes throughout the entire run. Because this was a radio show, the lines were
the most important, especially because each run/performance was being recorded. She... Show more

The stage management team had to hurry and get in contact with him to find out what was going
on. They found out that he was in class. They informed him that he had to leave class. He was
told that he could leave and they would get him a note to get him excused. However, he did not
leave and ended up being even later to the rehearsal. Friday pulled him aside and explained how to
make sure this didn t happen for the rest of the process. It was interesting to watch how she handled
this tough situation by being calm and using good communication skills. Shadowing an Assistant
Stage Manager was a very educational experience for me. I never realized how intense a job it
was. She really had to be paying attention at all times. I think that after shadowing Brooke, I have a
better idea of what it means to be a stage

Essay on The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima
In The Sound of Waves, Yukio Mishima creates an exquisite story which has strong idealistic and
mythic features. Although Mishima writes of young love and tranquility in The Sound of Waves,
his later works are categorized as aggressive and containing violent sexual actions. Even Mishima
himself referred to The Sound of Waves as that great joke on the public (qtd. in Ishiguro 385).
However, one cannot compare this novel to Mishima s other literary pieces; in order to classify it as
romanticized, one must evaluate the usage of imagery, an idealized setting, mythical allusions, and
characterizations which establish the romantic driven qualities in The Sound of Waves. It is
apparent that nature plays a major role throughout The Sound of... Show more content on

Mythical allusions described by Mishima serve to highlight the other qualities within The Sound
of Waves. When Shinji first catches sight of Hatsue, she is letting her hair stream and her cheeks
glow (7). These characteristics are shown many times throughout the novel and resemble Vergil s
depictions of goddesses such as Venus and Juno in the Aeneid. One conflict that Hatsue must
overcome is when Yasuo attempts to rape her; his plot was obstructed by the intervention of a
furious hornet. Hatsue sees the flashing of the little golden colored wings and wonders what god
it [is] who [has] come to her rescue. (93).The interference of the hornet seems far fetched, for most
would think that the hornet would not only attack Yasuo, but also Hatsue. In this case, Mishima
created an idealized situation were nature as saved Hatsue from the immoral actions of Yasuo. The
setting of the island Uta jima is idealized, which creates a place where the romance between
Hatsue and Shinji can seem realistic. The reader begins the novel with a description of this island
and two spots with surpassingly beautiful views. (3).After this, the reader is introduced to a young
man, Shinji, climbing up the stairs of the lighthouse. Mishima depicts this area as one of the most
beautiful views on the island. The

Theme Of Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress
Love is the one of the most powerful feelings one can experience. The other feeling is fear. When
a situation combines the both of them, which will prevail? The passage chosen comes from Dai
Sijie s Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress where the Narrator experiences this struggle after
being attacked and returning to an empty home. Only a fantasy about the Little Seamstress could
remedy the gloom which hangs over him. The passageillustrates that the Narrator has a deep
longing for the Little Seamstress but his respectful attitude towards her due to an underlying fear;
which reveals his utter obedience.
The assault on the Narrator took a heavy toll on his mind, sending him into depression. The
Narrator ends up in an all time low and in a state of emptiness. The Narrator describes his house
as lonely and bleak with the rancid smell of desolation in the air. The gloomy diction reveals the
feeling of isolation engulfing the Narrator as an expansive nothingness is felt inside of his small
house. In an attempt to cure himself, the Narrator attempted to read his favourite novel but it was
impossible to concentrate on. This selection of detail explains that nothing real, even if he deeply
cared about it, would remedy the displeasure he was feeling. The oppressive smell of desolation
would not resolve as a result the Narrator was flooded with rage once again. This ominous and
powerful diction depicts the overwhelming nature of the events surrounding the Narrator

  • 3. Masque Of The Red Death Essay The Masque of the Red Death was published in May of 1842 by Edgar Allen Poe. It s clearly an allegorical story, one that can be more narrowly defined as a parable. A parable is defined by Encyclopedia Britannica as a fable like story which uses humans instead of animals, and draws an analogy between a particular instance of human behavior...and human behaviour at large . It s specifically designed to deliver a moral message or lesson, and the one in Masque is that no one can escape death, no matter what artifices are placed to obstruct it. This is interesting, but the real magnificence of the tale is in the literary genre in which Poe tells it, which is the Grotesque. The definition of this term in literature is a bit indistinct, but can be reduced to a couple of key characteristics: The Grotesque fits in between the real and the fantastic, while being simultaneously centered between funny and frightening (The Grotesque). Poe s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The goriness and irony of Prince Prospero s revel tell only half the story of the danse macabre. (Di Renzo, 193) Harold Bloom argues that the novella isn t grotesque at all, but Arabesque: The Mask of the Red Death is one of Poe s most memorable Arabesques (Bloom, 13). While this is partially true because of the psychological aspects of the piece, it s not entirely accurate as a representation of the entire work. The creation of terror, the juxtaposition of the real and supernatural, the absurdity and almost comical aspects, all the poles of what we understand the grotesque to mean have been solidly touched upon in The Masque of the Red Death. Poe himself refined and encapsulated a coherent meaning for the grotesque, and the tale stands as a perfect example of what a good representation of it should strive to ... • 5. Theme Of Self Image In 12 Angry Men Self image is a largely talked about issue. From negative to positive outlooks, it can be seen in most magazines, heard on most talk shows, and is mentioned in almost every article on the internet. The 1957 MGM film Twelve Angry Men compels the characters in the film and the audiences to view their own self image when making a decision on the guilt of an eighteen year old boy who is accused of killing his father. By using logic, reflection, and attitude, the movie shows each of the characters to review their views and beliefs and how they see themselves and others. During the film, logic was required on everyone s part. They were deciding on an eighteen year old kid s life! It was not a decision to be made quickly. Mr. Davis realizes this and is the only one to vote not guilty when taking the first vote (Lumet). Logic came into play because Mr. Davis thought logically about all of the evidence presented and because of this he felt that there was a reasonable doubt and could therefore, not sentence the young man. Throughout the rest of the film, we see more of the men thinking logically, for example, when Juror Nine realizes that the woman who claims she witnessed the murder, wore glasses and would not have been able to clearly see the boy if she claimed to be laying in bed trying to fall asleep. Another example is when juror number five, who grew up in the same area of town that the defense did, shows the proper way of using a switchbladeknife, making a logical ... • 6. Lyndon B. Johnson s Involvement In The Vietnam War The history of the Vietnam War had a violent beginning. Before the assassination of President Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson had little to no involvement in the Vietnam conflict. Beforehand the United States had mainly sent supplies and aid to South Vietnam against North Vietnam. After the assassination of both president Kennedy and the President of South Vietnam, the war became inevitable. After becoming President, Johnson had to focus on Vietnam and the spread of communism. The uprisings in South Vietnam after the assassination led Johnson to have more force than Kennedy ever did. The tipping point was the gulf of Tonkin incident. Two destroyers were attacked in the gulf of Tonkin off of Vietnam. This led to the gulf of Tonkin resolution. This joint resolution enacted by Congress gave the President power to use military force without a declaration of war. After the gulf incident Johnson s response to the public stated that he would not commit American troops to the ground to fight a foreign war. Shortly after the president learned that South Vietnam was losing and couldn t even protect United States establishments stationed there. • 8. Malcolm Gladwell s Theory Of The Tipping Point Typically ranging from 100 to 400 square feet, tiny houses could easily be mistaken for a small shed or plentiful sized walk in closet (Corson). Tiny houses are an alternative to modern housing that can be taken on the go, similar to the transportable capabilities of an RV or mobile home. In order to understand why tiny houses boomed in popularity since 2014, Malcolm Gladwell s theory of the Tipping Point can be used to analyze how the movement sparked. The rise in interest of the tiny houseis accredited to the context in which it develops, the salesmen and connectors that spread the tiny house movement, and the many aspects that allow tiny houses to stick with their audience. The tiny house movement spreads partially due to various environmental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the three, known as the Connector, acts as a living wire who connects themselves to many different worlds and subcultures and niches (Gladwell). In the tiny house epidemic, many connectors in the form of bigger companies help project the tiny house lifestyle. Two different television networks, HGTV and FYI, produced popular shows that informed the public what tiny houses looked like and what accommodations they came with, of those being Tiny House Big Living, Tiny House Hunters, Tiny House Nation, and Tiny House World. Each of the shows first aired in late 2014, except for Tiny House World which came in late 2015 (Tiny House, Big living, Tiny House Hunters, Tiny House Nation, Tiny House World). By producing a tv show about tiny houses, whether the show follows contractors, people who build the house themselves, or real estate agents that sell to a prospective buyers, HGTV and FYI easily allow every household with a television set to explore a growing movement that encourages finding freedom by thinking big on living small (St. Louis Sanchez). In addition to bringing the tiny movement into the house of their audience, the show producers also aim to be salesmen. According to Malcolm Gladwell, the salesmen work to convince others that they need something they never knew about before (Gladwell). These shows make money off of every episode they put out, and they do so in hopes that the same audience will return with more numbers in order to watch their show. HGTV and FYI produce these shows that highlight the price, process, and advantages of being apart of the movement. • 9. The Power Of Edison s Unconventional Tactics Of Thomas... Thomas Alva Edison possessed a unique intellectual toolbox. His tool filled mind provided a plethora of unconventional methods which enabled him to succeed. At an early age, Edison learned that he could manipulate people, sometimes by withholding the truth to avoid confrontation (Conot 5). Likewise, he would unconventionally manipulate his experiments or audience to achieve an anticipated result (Unconventional Tactics...). A perfect example is the time Edison publicly executed an elephant, named Topsy, in an aggressive effort to maintain success. In the early 1900 s, the standard for electricity known as direct current (DC), invented by Edison, reigned supreme. This invention consistently generated Edison a substantial amount of revenue for discovering it. The reason Edison went to the extremity of electrocuting an elephant was to both demonstrate a point, but more importantly, vanquish his two rival innovators, George Westinghouse and Nicola Tesla. The two rivals posed a great threat to Edison s monopoly and an even greater threat to his rising popularity. Their weapon of choice? The newly discovered form of electricity called alternating current(AC) (Long). Edison argued that their AC would be infinitely more dangerous to use than his DC, but more importantly, he feared mankind would begin a conversion towards AC (Chandler). In a desperate and very unconventional attempt to discredit his two rival innovators and their form of electricity, Edison released 6,600 volts of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. A Country Is Authoritarian Or Democratic Is Not A Choice A country being authoritarian or democratic is not a choice; it s a result of the policies the country makes. There is no one factor that makes a country democratic or authoritarian, but the degree of capitalism that is implemented in a country is the most effective factor in determining a countries regime type. Australia and North Korea are two countries, which have two completely different regime types and economies. Using these countries as examples, I will show how capitalismis the most important factor in the regime type of any country that exists in the world today. I will first give a brief introduction of each of the two countries mentioned. Then, I will describe what it means for a country to be democratic and compare the two countries chose to those requirements. I will then go into reasons of how the degree capitalism is used affects the country s regime type. I will use Australia is a country that has a democratic regime and a capitalist economy. According to the Freedom House Freedom in the World Report of 2014, which rates countries freedom on a scale of one to seven, Australia has a perfect 1.0 (Australia). This means that Australia is a full and free country. On the other hand, North Korea has an authoritarian regime and a very tightly closed economy. North Korea s score in the Freedom House report is a 7.0(North Korea). This score means that the country is not free and that the people do not have as many rights as free countries do. • 11. Sociological Inquiry Documents How Places Are Shaped By... Introduction A growing line of sociological inquiry documents how places are shaped by the meanings residents construct and attach to them. Specifically, scholars have studied the symbolic relationship between people and places and the ways that persons invest places with meaning and value in order to make sense of their world (Borer, 2006, p. 180). These meanings have the power to direct how and why people move to a place, how they invest their time and money, and the ways in which they do or do not engage in civic and political action (Firey, 1945; Bell, 1994; Milligan, 1998; Paulsen, 2004; Alkon and Traugot, 2008; Kaufman and Kaliner, 2011). Because of this, it is central to uncover how meanings are made, who specifically makes them, and how they direct action on the ground. Questions about the sources and consequences of the meanings residents construct are particularly salient in communities that experience an influx of new residents. The meanings new residents attach to place do not always align with those of the longtime residents of a community or neighborhood. The different race, class, and socioeconomic statuses of the new and longtime residents further exacerbate these contestations. For instance, affluent newcomers often hold the power to shape the future of the neighborhood, either by valuing the higher status local group and uncoupling the community from the longtime residents and poor and minority groups (Logan and Molotch, 1987; Anderson, 1990; Smith, ... • 13. The Dark Knight And The Departed Film Analysis Significant Connections A significant connection between the four films The Dark Knight directed by Christopher Nolan, The Departed directed by Martin Scorsese, The Prestige directed by Christopher Nolan and Gone Girl directed by David Fincher is the way in which the directors have manipulated the narrative structure to engage the audience in contrasting ways. Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese used equally weighted protagonists and antagonists in the films The Dark Knight and The Departed to create the narrative structure in a sense so that the audience feels equally engaged by both characters. • 14. The Issues Of The Conflict Conflict is rarely unavoidable when in close relationships. As the text states, people most commonly handle conflict in one of five ways: accommodation, avoidance, collaboration, competition, or reactivity. There are positive and negative possibilities of outcomes from using any of the five approaches to handling conflict (262). Accommodation involves an individual s abandonment of his /her own goals to the desires of the other individual, whereas avoidance, a lose lose conflict style, involves various techniques that involve lower risk to the individual than direct confrontation. Collaboration and competition differ mainly over the value of personal needs or goals. Collaboration involves using compromise, where every person involved are willing to alter his/her views to reach a solution to the conflict. Competition is a more direct approach involving a clash of goals which exists because one will pursue their own goals without regard for others. Reactivity is characterized as nonstrategic and is communicated in a negative way. I argue the combination of collaborating and avoiding is an effective combination because in order for an individual to effectively and efficiently solve problems individuals must know when to redirect conversation to a more relevant topic and have the ability to take the emotionout of problem solving. My results showed my number one conflict style is collaborating (9), followed by avoiding (8) and compromising (6). Accommodating (4) and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ultimately, Dalton s theory for color blindness was wrong, but as he was the first person ever to research it, the condition became known as Daltonism (famousscientists.org NP). The Daltons research papers changes, he began to study and observe the physical sciences: heat conduction, gas expansion by heat, the properties of light, the aurora borealis, and meteorology. How Does Hamlet Have Feigned Madness I believe that Hamlet claimed to have feigned madness because then the suspicion of what he is planning, the revenge he is planning, wont seem so clear to the others. Hamlet made it seem like he was going mad so people would just brush off any weird or maddening comments or actions that he has and will do in the act of revenge for his fathers death. I believe this because after Hamlet talks to the ghostof his father he says, I ll wipe away all trivial fond records, all saws of books, all forms, all pressures past that youth and observation copied there, and thy commandment all alone shall live within the book and volume of my brain, (Act I, Scene V). After talking to his fathers ghost, Hamlet decides that nothing matters in life other than to seek revenge for his father s murder. • 17. Phonology Of Grammar And Syntax Grammar and syntax are in common because with syntax you are also using grammar. Knowing the parts of speech in grammar goes hand and hand with syntax. The parts of speech are: Nouns (person, place, thing, or idea), Verbs (action or being), Prepositions (time, place, or position), Adjectives (describes nouns and pronouns), Adverbs (describes verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs), Conjunctions (join words, phrases, or sentences), Interjections (express emotion or are fillers in sentences), and Pronouns (take the place of nouns) are very important in both syntax and grammar (Lunsford, 2013, pp.294 302). In the tree diagram, there are also functional categories and syntactic categories that are both grammar and syntax related. Phonetics and Phonology Analysis Phonetics is the study of speech sounds and everything can be measured in phonetics. The science of phonetics attempts to describe all of the sounds used in all languages (Fromkin, 2014, p.192). Articulatory, acoustic, and auditory are all part of speech sounds. Articulatory phonetics is the way that sounds of language are produced through the vocal tract. Acoustic phonetics is how sound waves of the sounds that we make, and auditory phonetics is the sound waves that are received when we hear sounds. Our public education can give as good results as private, and also fulfils a social function without public funding, it would be impossible to achieve: to serve the entire student population and allow gaps in educational inequality begin to be reversed. • 21. Great Britain And The European Union The recent decision of Great Britain to leave the European Union coincides with the recent election of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States. Both events can be explained by using economic and cultural arguments. In order to fully understand these occurrences, one must understand the economic anxiety as well as the anti globalisation sentiment that surrounded the Brexit movement. Trump s candidacy involves some of the same aspects, yet Trump s voter demographic, the white, working class, must also be studied. In the end, it can be determined that there is arguably more of a cultural reasoning to these incidences. The instances of Great Britain s exit from the EU and the election of Donald Trump were both so originally downplayed that when both possibilities came to light, the world was in shock and awe. June 23, 2016 was the first shock as Great Britain held a referendum in order to decide the question of whether or not the country should remain within the European Union. Brexit was the winning vote. Political elites had been defeated and the complaints of the voters were heard. These complaints stemmed from economic anxiety within the country and the demise of the support of globalisation. The Economist article, Drawbridges Up , describes the way in which voters wished to take control of borders once again in order to slow the flow of immigrants and refugees. The Trump candidacy shares some of the same fundamental aspects of Brexit yet Trumps true rise to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. The difference between medieval and early modern is one... The medieval and early modern periods were eras with distinctive issues and ideals. Some of their key themes were very similar, such as the importance of religion and the role it played in everyday life, while other matters were unique to their time, such as the medieval selling of indulgences, or the early modern Reformation of the Church. These examples illustrate clearly the mixture of change and stasis in the two ages, as a subject shared by both periods yielded so great a diversity of issues. The distinction of the eras makes it evident that some change did occur, but as the period of time between them was not very great, the change must be limited. Everyman and Dr Faustus are respectively medieval and early modern drama texts that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His play provides a mocking critique of religious customs, and particularly ridicules Catholic rituals. Marlowe dresses Mephostophilis in the habit of an old Franciscan friar, as Faustus comments That holy shape becomes a devil best, illustrating an air of contempt for the Catholic clergy. He further associates Catholicism with evil and devilry as he conjures Mephostophilis by chanting in Latin, the language of the Catholic Church. This mockery of Catholicism may be testament to contemporary social attitudes rather than the personal view of Marlowe himself. In the medieval era, it was highly uncommon for anybody to speak out against the Church, either through fear or because it was all they knew, but the Reformation encouraged writers to criticise the papacy and the earlier Church, often as a form of public entertainment. Writers often allied Catholic characters with themes of idiocy or ineptitude, as Marlowe does in his portrayal of Pope Adrian as a humourless megalomaniac, void...of commonsense . Marlowe manipulated the public disdain of Catholicism to criticise established religion in general, challenging many commonly held views, especially regarding forgiveness and salvation. • 25. Love And Hate In The Story Of An Hour Love and hate are both very powerful emotions. The abundance one can feel inside when feeling them can be overwhelming at times. I think everyone can relate to the feeling when you love someone so much you would do anything and everything for them. We can also understand that feeling when you can t even stand the thought of someone being in the same room of you. When we look at what emotionis more powerful, I think hate is stronger than love. The reason being is that love can quickly turn to hate, but hate doesn t change to love very fast, if at all. I think Othello is a great example of this. His love for his wife, turned to hate so fast because he thought she was cheating on him. He murdered his wife in pure cold blood which shows how hate can be such a powerful emotion that it can actually cause someone to want to commit murder. The feeling of love and hate can change someone, and they both can be very powerful. However, I think that hate is an emotion unlike no other in which the feeling is very stable, in the since that it is very hard to change someone s mind about you when they hate you. In the short story The Story of an Hour a lady talks about the feeling after her husband passed away. She described the feeling of being set free as she said There was a feverish triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory (Schlilib, 429). Low bone mineral density can result in stress fractures within a female s body (6). Female athletes with menstrual dysfunction often display low levels of the reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone. When the levels of these hormones are low, it is difficult for bones to retain calcium which causes a gradual loss of bone mass. It has been proven that when comparing amenorrhic athletes to athletes with regular menstrual cycles, the bone mineral density if reduced by 14% in amenorrhic athletes and 27% in regular athletic women (7). All three conditions result in serious health and body conditions which can decrease a female s ability to participate in physical activities. The female athlete triad is considered to be a significant health concern. In relation to the female athlete triad, some women are more prone to the condition than others. Sports that emphasize performance based on weight specifications increase the prevalence of the female athlete triad. Women who participate in sports such as ballet, figure skating, gymnastics, diving, and other aesthetic component sports have a higher risk of developing aspects of the female athlete triad in addition to women who participate in sports that involve weight classes such as tae kwon do, judo, wrestling, rowing, and equestrian (6). It may be many different things depending on each individual. Many soldiers get trained so their mentality is to characterize their opponents as less than human, so their lives lose all worth. Some soldiers however, are not prepared for this, even though they have been trained. One thing is training for it, another thing is actually killing a humanbeing. As they killmore people, it becomes normalized for them. All they have seen changes their mind, while all of their dreams get swept aside by bloody hands of the hypnotized while they carry the cross of homicide. But why kill other strangers? What s in it for the soldiers? War feeds the rich while it buries the poor. Rich people are power hungry, selling soldiers in human grocery store, using them as their little puppets who obey their master, making them go around killing each other in order to determine who is right, but in the end, war determines who is left. The Man I Killed by Tim O Brien shows how soldiers who commit violence become traumatized and how that changes over time. At the beginning of the story the narrator, Tim, gets affected by committing an act of violence when he was in the Vietnam War, killing an enemy Vietnamese soldier. Many thoughts began flowing in his head, all the time thinking about the man he killed. He had been born, maybe, in 1946 in the village of My Khe near the central coastline of ... It is very important to draw comparison between the internet, library, television and public places as a result of the fact the internet can also be considered or viewed as a public place where information can be obtained freely at any point in time, and this makes it very important to know what the law says about this disseminating information to the general public with respect to the first amendment. Looking at this various medium i.e libraries, television and public places and what the law stipulates according to the United State constitution the first amendment expressly forbids against depriving citizens their right to freedom of speech, of press, right to assemble and petition the government. Roland Barthes developed a range of semiotic tools to analyse the cultural meanings that are conveyed in advertising images, in a particular context. Using these semiotic tools, select and analyse four magazine adverts. This essay will discuss Roland Barthes ideas and his semiotic tools, and will also look at how Barthes uses these tools to analyse images and how they make us think. Roland Barthes was a French philosopher who wrote many books about the literary theory and semiotics. His writing has influenced and helped shape many postmodern theories. His most famous book Death of the author explains his theory on visual analysis. Barthes says that when we see an image, the author or creator of the image does not matter. Each individual person will find a meaning from that image. We all analyse images on our own. The meaning of an image lies with the audience. The author is not the authority on the meaning of the image. Although we are all quite similar in what we get from an image, different people will get different meanings. This is due to the experiences we have had throughout life. Barthes says no object has a natural meaning. (Barthes, 1967 p.25) Meanings are defined by culture, so for example, if in the UK someone does the thumbs up , we take this to mean that everything is okay, but if someone does it whilst standing at the side of the road, it means they want a lift, and in scuba diving it means you want to go up to the surface. This movie portrays these two views side by side through several different scenes. The movie is set in the black community of Bedford Stuyevesant on the hottest day of the year. The neighborhood DJ Love Daddy opens the stage, telling everyone to wake up , and that it will be a hot, hot day. The temperature seems to be a frequently talked about subject in the beginning of the film, suggesting that something is bound to happen as heat symbolizes anger and violence. There are many little instances of racial problems that lead up to the big finale, proving that, while the civil rights movement had ended, race was still and still is a part of American culture. On the other hand, at the edge of the swarm, cells usually paused and then swam back toward the center of the swarm or along its edge. Hence, the properties of the interior of the monolayer was different than the properties of its outer edge. Thus, the local alignment among cells was accomplished by cell body collision and short range hydrodynamic interactions. While there s a fairly good understanding of how bacteria regulate, assemble and rotate their flagella to swim in liquid media, little is still known about how some bacteria is able to use their flagella in order to move over the tops of solids otherwise known as swarming. Thus, Kearns studied what is needed in swarming motility in diverse bacterial model systems such as an increase in the number of flagella per cell, secretion of a surfactant to reduce surface tension for spreading and movement in multicellular groups. Therefore, Kearns was able to determine that swarming motility generally requires an energy rich, solid medium, however, the specific conditions that support swarming depends on the organism in question. One reason why students are not successful in college is that of drugs. When students leave their homes to go off to college they meet new people, and experience overjoy of new freedom. When students notice that they are experiencing new freedom, they try new and different things. One of the main things students try that are new and different, depending on where the student is from, are drugs. Students use drugs for a lot of different reasons. Students use drugs to cope with stress, try to maintain course load, and they are influenced by peer pressure. In college, drugs are taken too far once students start to use them. Those who are enrolled in a full time college program are twice as likely to abuse drugs and alcohol than those who don t attend college (College students and Drug Abuse). The students who abuse drugs in college are the students that are normally not successful in college. The drugs take over the mind and students become unfocused and behind in school work, which leads to students failing out of college. Another reason why students are not successful in college is that of stress. Relationships, family issues and cost of tuition are stress related factors that are dealt with a college student. The America Institute of the street website says, a 2008 mental health study by the Associated Press and mtvU eight in 10 college students say they have experienced stress in their daily lives over the past three months (Stress in College Students p. 1). • 41. Augustine On Free Will Analysis In Augustine s On Free Choice of the Will he explains that the human soul is predisposed to have a good will and that it is a will by which we desire to live upright and honorable lives and to attain the highest wisdom (Augustine 19, 1993). Augustine believes that in order to be free we must live according to our good will. To follow our good will we must live according to the four main virtues in life: prudence, fortitude, temperance, and justice. He defines prudence as having the knowledge of what is to be desired and what is to be avoided (Augustine 20, 1993). Augustine establishes fortitude as the disposition of the soulby which we have no fear of misfortune or of the loss of things that are not in our power (Augustine 20,1993).... In On Free Choice of the Will Evodius says that, [he] acknowledges that all four virtues that [Augustine] just described, ... are present in those who love their own good will and value it highly (Augustine 21, 1993). Here Evodius is stating that by living with these four virtues we are able to live a happy life that is in accordance with our good will. Augustine states that to have a good will is to have something far more valuable than all earthly kingdoms and pleasures... (Augustine 20, 1993). Here he is saying that to be happy in life you must have more than just temporary possessions such as money or health, Augustine defines these possessions as temporal objects. In order to have a good will we must make a distinction between temporal objects and eternal objects; he explains these differences in the temporal and eternal laws. The eternal law demands that we purify our love by turning it away from temporal things and toward what is eternal (Augustine 25, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Blade Faults in Gas Turbines Gas turbines are often exposed to ingestion of particles suspended in the air such as dust, ash, salt, ice, water droplets, and sand particles during operation. These particles are the most important factor that cause blade fault in all types of gas turbines. The most common types of blade fault are fouling, erosion, tip clearance increase, water ingestion, and foreign object damage (FOD) [1]. Most of mentioned cases cause roughness over the blade surfaces that deteriorate the gas turbine performance. Different numerical methods were used to solve the gas turbine cascade flow field in recent years. In most of these studies, the quasi three dimensional Navier Stokes analysis is used. On the other hand, in some studies the flow fields were experimentally tested. Sheets of sandpaper with different equivalent sand grain roughness heights have been used by researchers to produce roughness on surface of gas turbine blades placed in a wind tunnel and applying flow conditions of their case. 1.1 Experimental work Yun et al. [2] used sheets of sandpapers with equivalent sand grain roughness heights of 106 and 400 micrometers. The performance tests have been conducted in a low speed, single stage, axial flow turbine having roughened blades. They showed that for blades with roughnesses of the fully rough regime (400 ), the normalized efficiency decreases by 11 percent for stator vanes and 8 percent for rotor blades. For blades having a roughness in the transitionally rough regime (106 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. The Healthcare Plan Of Clinton THE HEALTHCARE PLAN OF CLINTON Clinton s Healthcare Plan: the Reasons Why It Failed In the United States the issue of government funded healthcare programs has always been one of importance drawing attentions of many and involving myriads of debate sessions. Still now people take quite interest in dissecting and finally commenting on why Obamacare is a success and why Clintoncare/Hillarycare was not. But whatever may be the reason behind such indulgence, it must be analyzed why such a welfare effort like President Clinton s healthcare plan ultimately failed even though having some great features which, if implemented properly, would have changed the course of healthcare policies in the United States for a considerable period of... Congress, as one of the key players, was seriously considering plans to provide universal health coverage on one hand, and physicians, big businesses, and Republican lawmakers, on the other hand, as various interest groups opposing the Congress, were more interested in blocking the proposals of the Congress (Bok, 1998). The situation was a dilemmatic one and some reformation was needed. Clinton felt the nerve of the majority of the populace who were in favor of healthcare reform and hence, he made healthcare a primary weapon in his election campaigns. With his win the issue of healthcare reform came to forefront. It must be noted that gradually American businesses were singing in the tune of Clinton due to the fear of losing further businesses due to their disadvantageous position fueled by the rising health costs in the United States and Growing segments of the medical community expresses a desire to consider reforms; even hospitals seemed interested in some scheme that would spare them the heavy burden of giving free medical care to the uninsured (Bok, 1998). Moreover, Clinton was obliged to introduce a healthcare reform policy also due to the fact that large majorities of the public rated health care reform among the most urgent problems facing the nation and voiced support for a plan that would provide medical insurance for all Americans (Bok, 1998). Chin Torn Apart Or Mended By The Rule Of Zedong China: Torn Apart Or Mended By The Rule Of Mao Zedong There is controversy whether the rule of Mao Zedong was beneficial or destructive, though by looking into the depths of history the answer is revealed. As Mao Zedong took control over China on October 1, 1949, he immediately installed many reformations to China s economy, culture, and government. These reformations proved to be devastating towards the people of China. After decolonization Mao Zedong s enforcement of communism and international isolation lead China into attempting industrialization by imposing labor intensive methods, and preventing China from technologically advancing. The Sino Japanese war finally ended when Tokyo surrendered to the Allies in 1945 at the end of World War II (Kenley, Republican China ). • 45. Becoming A Law Enforcement Officer Essay The decision to become a law enforcement officer came to me around age eighteen. Since then, my behavior has been appropriate, and of high standard. However, I did a few things during my teenage years that I am not proud of. When I was fifteen I stole an MP3 player from another student at my high school and then shoplifted a pair of earphones from a local Walmart. A year later I shoplifted a pack of condoms from the same Walmart. These events have been haunting me ever since, and have changed the way I look at things compared to when I was a teenage kid. I was attending Kofa High Schoolthe first time I stole something of value. It was during class, we had just gone out of the classroom as a group and for some reason I went back into the class to grab something out of my backpack. When I was leaving the room I saw the MP3 player on a mesh pocket on one of the backpacks. I thought to myself for a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The thought of paying for condoms filled me with dread, especially because I wasn t sure on their policies of selling condoms to minors. It sounds ignorant to me now, but the teenage me was not sure about the legality of buying condoms at age sixteen and the thought of being the center of attention at the cash register was just dreadful. • 46. Brooke Friday For this assignment, I shadowed Brooke Friday, an Assistant Stage Manager for the DPA production of Midsummer Night s Dream, a radio show produced in the Studio Theatre. The day I visited was a dress rehearsal a couple of days before opening. For this production, Friday had many responsibilities to make sure the rehearsal process ran smoothly. Although she never had to make any blocking notes (the actors stood in front of microphones for the entirety of the show), she had to take numerous line notes. She also had to help set up and tear down the microphones, chairs, and the foley, the equipment used for sound effects. Lastly, she had to time the production. She had to time the entire run time along with the time for each scene. She told me that this was information for the editors when they go back and look at the recordings I feel her most important job was taking line notes throughout the entire run. Because this was a radio show, the lines were the most important, especially because each run/performance was being recorded. She... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 47. Essay on The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima In The Sound of Waves, Yukio Mishima creates an exquisite story which has strong idealistic and mythic features. Although Mishima writes of young love and tranquility in The Sound of Waves, his later works are categorized as aggressive and containing violent sexual actions. Even Mishima himself referred to The Sound of Waves as that great joke on the public (qtd. in Ishiguro 385). However, one cannot compare this novel to Mishima s other literary pieces; in order to classify it as romanticized, one must evaluate the usage of imagery, an idealized setting, mythical allusions, and characterizations which establish the romantic driven qualities in The Sound of Waves. It is apparent that nature plays a major role throughout The Sound of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mythical allusions described by Mishima serve to highlight the other qualities within The Sound of Waves. When Shinji first catches sight of Hatsue, she is letting her hair stream and her cheeks glow (7). These characteristics are shown many times throughout the novel and resemble Vergil s depictions of goddesses such as Venus and Juno in the Aeneid. One conflict that Hatsue must overcome is when Yasuo attempts to rape her; his plot was obstructed by the intervention of a furious hornet. Hatsue sees the flashing of the little golden colored wings and wonders what god it [is] who [has] come to her rescue. (93).The interference of the hornet seems far fetched, for most would think that the hornet would not only attack Yasuo, but also Hatsue. In this case, Mishima created an idealized situation were nature as saved Hatsue from the immoral actions of Yasuo. The setting of the island Uta jima is idealized, which creates a place where the romance between Hatsue and Shinji can seem realistic. The reader begins the novel with a description of this island and two spots with surpassingly beautiful views. (3).After this, the reader is introduced to a young man, Shinji, climbing up the stairs of the lighthouse. Mishima depicts this area as one of the most beautiful views on the island. The ... • 49. Theme Of Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress Love is the one of the most powerful feelings one can experience. The other feeling is fear. When a situation combines the both of them, which will prevail? The passage chosen comes from Dai Sijie s Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress where the Narrator experiences this struggle after being attacked and returning to an empty home. Only a fantasy about the Little Seamstress could remedy the gloom which hangs over him. The passageillustrates that the Narrator has a deep longing for the Little Seamstress but his respectful attitude towards her due to an underlying fear; which reveals his utter obedience. The assault on the Narrator took a heavy toll on his mind, sending him into depression. The Narrator ends up in an all time low and in a state of emptiness. The Narrator describes his house as lonely and bleak with the rancid smell of desolation in the air. The gloomy diction reveals the feeling of isolation engulfing the Narrator as an expansive nothingness is felt inside of his small house. In an attempt to cure himself, the Narrator attempted to read his favourite novel but it was impossible to concentrate on. This selection of detail explains that nothing real, even if he deeply cared about it, would remedy the displeasure he was feeling. The oppressive smell of desolation would not resolve as a result the Narrator was flooded with rage once again. This ominous and powerful diction depicts the overwhelming nature of the events surrounding the Narrator ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
