The target audience of UNCUT magazine is mainly 25+. We can tell this because the main image
used is a picture of Jimi Hendrix who was a legendary artist in the 1960-70 on the other hand
Kerrang magazine has a much younger target audience maybe between the ages of 15 – 25 because
Machine Head are a very recent band and target mainly a young audience. A similarity is the target
audience will mainly be men because the music is mostly of the rock genre (not to say that women
don’t like the rock genre).

The house styles of the two magazines are very different because firstly the UNCUT magazine has a
very neat and well set out uses a Serif font to make it very formal for example the masthead of the
magazine is a big white title right across the top of the page from the primary optical area to the
strong fallow area. Also it uses the same font all over the front page of the front cover. The
masthead also relates to the lexical field of music because ‘uncut’ can relate to music because of the
editing part of music and ‘uncut’ music i unedited and original music which vaguely shows the genre
of the whole music magazine. On the other hand the masthead ‘KERRANG!’ is an onomatopoeia
which sounds like the noise that a guitar makes when is aggressivelystrummed. This connotes the
genre of music that is produced throughout the whole magazine. By using the title ‘KERRANG!’ it
also brings in the lexical field of music into the magazine. Also the way Kerrang is written it uses a
smashed effect showing connotations of maybe rebellion which also connotes that type and genre
of the music throughout the magazine. The main images in both magazines are very different, for
example Jimmi Hendrix’s picture is a black and white picture of him on his own, and this helps us
mainly concentrate on his facial expression whereas the picture of Machine Head on the other
magazine is a full body shot of him holding a guitar. Jimmi Hendrix’s picture uses informal symmetry
and the Machine Head picture uses the rule of thirds very well with the help of the guitar in the
picture because he isn’t in the middle of the page like Jimmi. Unlike the Uncut magazine Kerrang
uses a range of other images on the front cover of the page.

The two magazines also use the Guttenberg principle in the front covers. In UNCUT magazine has a
sign in the primary optical area stating that there is a ‘free CD’ within the magazine. Also the primary
optical area is where the masthead is telling us straight away what the magazine is. In the terminal
optical area like most magazines that are published is the barcode. Magazine publishers put this
here because it isn’t important in promotion and marketing and that is the last place people usually
look when scanning the front cover of a magazine. In-between the primary and terminal optical
areas is the main image, this is put here although you may think you look straight at the picture we
usually don’t. We usually look at the picture second. In strong fallow area there is a quote from the
main article in the magazine saying ‘jimmy page speaks’. In the weak fallow area there are only small
headlines of different articles in the magazine. These have been put here because we don’t always
look twice at them so they only have to be small. On the other hand KERRANG! Magazine uses
exactly the same principal although the two magazines have very different target audiences. It has
the masthead and some images of different bands that will be in the magazines but all the rest of
the things are very similar including the smaller article headlines in the weak fallow area etc.
