2. Front covers
One of the key conventions of the Rolling
stones magazine is the font used for the
masthead. This is always in serif font, using a
capital R and a capital S with the remainder
of letters in each word in smaller font and
joined together.
The colour of the font can vary from
white, beige, red, yellow, grey, green and
blue as can be seen in the examples
attached. When white or red are used they
have a black drop shadow. Red always has a
white outline.
3. Cover lines are usually seen in columns going down the
right or left hand side of the page, but sometimes
down both. Occasionally the cover lines are written
across the lower half of the page as can be seen
below with the magazine advertising Oasis. As can be
seen on each of the examples shown, the featured
person or group on the front cover will have the
largest cover line on the front page. The cover lines
font will vary in size and colour to distinguish
between the different topics.
4. The Rolling Stone’s magazine will always have
a picture of one character or group placed
centrally on the page. This is often a musician
or group, but because the magazine varies in
the topics discussed, it may feature people
from other walks of life e.g. an actor or
politician. Examples of this can be seen below
where Barrack Obama and Robert Downey Jr.
are featured on the front cover of Rolling
Stone. This diversity attracts a more varied
audience as people may like to read
interviews or articles about non musicians.
Rolling Stone magazine offers this variety and
therefore appeals to a wider audience.
5. The target audience for Rolling Stone
magazine are people aged 35-55 and
it has more male readers than female.
The choice of musicians, politicians
and actors who feature in this
magazine will be chosen to meet this
particular target audience.Key
conventions can be appealing to
readers as they feel a familiarity with
the magazine, they know how to
navigate it and they understand what
the magazine offers for
example, articles on music and
musicians only or additional subjects
as well.
6. CONTENTS PAGES
The Rolling Stone magazine has key conventions
of their contents pages. This is appealing to
regular readers as it enables them to navigate
their way simply through the magazine. This
increases repeat sales as it helps retain
customers.
As can be seen on the contents pages shown, the
main featured person is highlighted by a
photograph on the contents page. This is
accompanied by a short and simple title, which
tells the reader who the article is about. Further
artists featured are also photographed in a
smaller shot on the contents page with an
additional title informing the reader.
All contents pages are on a white background
with light/dark black font. The title of the feature
is usually presented in a dark font with a short
description of the article in a lighter, smaller font.
There are occasional exceptions when couloured
font is occasionally used as can be seen directly
below.
