Holonomics: Business Where People and Planet Matter describes a groundbreaking approach to implementing profound transformational change in organisations in which solutions are ones which engage people across the whole organisation, develop strong cultures, trust amongst members and effective communication.

Customer Experiences with Soul: A New Era in Design (Holonomics Education, February 2017) is the new book by Simon Robinson and Maria Moraes Robinson which describes how their approach with Holonomics can be applied to the area of customer experience design. It introduces concepts relating to a sense of wholeness, a sense of being, and a sense of the sensory/intuitive dimension of knowing as compared with the thinking/feeling dimension.
The phrase ‘customer experiences with soul’ was created in order to express the essential way in which it is no longer enough for business to have a purpose, it also needs to be in touch with its soul, a soul which collectively expresses itself through each part. Soul is an elusive concept to capture, quantify and describe, but when it exists, we can sense, feel and intuit its presence. It has to be authentic, and it is not a quality which is added on to an existing experience as an additional component. The more values we have in our approach to our work and our businesses, and the greater human connection we have with our customers, whether it is direct contact with people in a beauty salon, or more distant contact by telephone in a service centre, or indirectly via an intermediary website, the more soul there will be in the customer experience.

Mike: Welcome to Coventry University and for taking part in this collaboration. Can you start by telling us a bit about yourself, what you do, what is your experience in business, about what role you take and where does it fit in the business?
Simon: Sure, a pleasure to be here. I started out in banking, I joined Barclays as a graduate many, many years ago and did lot of different thigs with them, from leading a digital operation to leading their branch network across the country and in London. My time with Barclays has given me the skills and chance to lead large scales digital people, operations and businesses and I spend time at Santander, a Spanish company, a different culture, I was leading a national business there, delivering investment, international advice across the UK, and in the latter part of my career, I focused on public-private sector partnerships I did a number of years at Capita and now I work at People Plus. People Plus does 3 things: 16000 people across the UK who are helping transform people’s lives, we help people who are imprisoned and offer education for those who want to turn their lives around, we run a rehabilitation company, I help people that need access to carers to get those carers, we help people get long-term employment jobs for those who specialise to helping people start their own businesses and we deliver apprenticeships. From banking to making a big difference is my experience.
Mike: That’s great. That means you are very well experienced, and our next question is about leadership, how do you understand leadership on a team and company level?
Simon: I apply the same philosophy today in leading to the same when I started out regardless of the number of people in my team. I believe that people have a lot of potential and your job is to create the right climate and the right processes, environment for them to succeed to create a sense of what the future looks like as a vision, success what will feel like for them when they will get there. That’s how I approach things today: we have a statement of vision to make a difference in 1 million lives of people by 2022, we talk about the business and what the milestones of that journey will be, and I focus on the talent I need in order to achieve these goals, finding the best talent I can from outside the organisation and to bring them here and to find the best talent in the organisation and develop it. Leadership for me is about creating a clear view for people, create a climate for them to succeed in and let them get on with what they do best which is serving the clients we work with.
Mike: Right, that’s very interesting in terms of what students are looking at because we do a contrast between transformational and transactional leadership and that’s very much transformational. Are there times when transactional leadership works better?

The Latin American edition of the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit will feature green materials, marketing developments, and social and customer impacts. For the first time, the summit will discuss the social and safety issues of cosmetics in the context of sustainability. The summit will be hosted in São Paulo on 14-15th September.
With the Brazilian economy mired in recession, brands are focusing on marketing to strengthen sales and gain market share. This session highlights major developments in the green cosmetics arena. To begin, the keynote speaker looks at the use of holonomics in marketing: how can this new concept encourage brands to develop a more systemic and holistic approach? What are the applications in the marketing of green cosmetics?
In this keynote Simon Robinson discusses purpose, values, and authenticity and provides five key insights which will help your businesses and organisations develop engaging, sustainable and more soulful customer experiences.
The session ends with panelists discussing the difficulties in marketing green products during an economic recession: how can brands and retailers maintain consumer interest in sustainable products? How can you strengthen consumer appeal in a price-sensitive market?
BT Group has had an interesting history in the UK. In 1912, the British General Post Office was given the monopoly to build the UK’s telecoms infrastructure. British Telecom was formed in 1980, and became independent from the Post office in 1981, and then was privatised in 1984, with 50% of the shares being sold to investors. The second half of British Telecom was sold in 1991 and 1993, which coincided with me joining the group in 1992 as a psychologist in BT’s Human Factors Department, within it’s Research Department at BT Laboratories, which also contained the Speech Recognition and Futurology departments, headed up by Peter Cochrane, one of the UK’s leading futurologists.
Along with Xerox PARC, the BT Human Factors team was one of the largest in the world, and unlike more academic teams based in universities, we worked extremely closely with our marketing colleagues, who were our internal clients. In 1995 I co-authored this paper Delivering Competitive Edge in which Mike Atyeo and I wrote:
"Usability is a key business driver and user-centred techniques are emerging to deliver this competitive edge. It is essential to move away from simple product design, beyond the integrated service design of product, packaging, documentation, and after-sales service, to the comprehensive design of the customer experience.
In response to rapid technological change and increased global competition, service industries have undergone radical change. These were initially focused on reducing cost and time to market, but more recently have concentrated on ways of understanding an anticipating customer needs. We have adopted an approach we call ‘designing the customer experience’. At its heart is a programme of research into human needs. By bringing together Marketing and Human Factors with more radical perspectives such as semiotics and anthropology, creative and visualisation skills, and rapid technological advances, we have generated an environment for user-centred innovation."
