Mobile location based applications have only begun to scratch the surface of what's possible. By leveraging semantics, or the relationships between things, location based applications can become much more powerful - and much more useful.
This presentation shows how the Freebase Geo Search API can be used to implement simple, but powerful location + semantic patterns to power the next generation of mobile location based applications.
Current conceptual models and methodologies for Web applications concentrate on content, navigation, and service modeling. Although some of them are meant to address semantic web applications too, they do not fully exploit the whole potential deriving from interaction with ontological data sources and and from Semantic annotations. This paper proposes an extension to Web application conceptual models toward Semantic Web. We devise an extension of the WebML modeling framework that fulfills most of the design requirements emerging for the new area of Semantic Web. We generalize the development process to cover Semantic Web and we devise a set of new primitives for ontology importing and querying. Finally, an implementation prototype of the proposed concepts is proposed within the commercial tool WebRatio.
Semantic Data Normalization For Efficient Clinical Trial ResearchOntotext
Clinical trials, both public and proprietary, hold a huge amount of valuable information. Acquiring knowledge from that information in a cost and time efficient manner is a major industry pain point.
Although information from clinical trials is stored in structured or semi-structured form, it is rarely coded with medical terminologies, which creates a significant level of ambiguity and increases the effort for data preparation for analytical purposes.

Abstract:
In Smart City projects huge amounts of different datasets have to be linked or even integrated. A multitude of sensors provide information about the current operation status of the many urban systems like energy and water supplies, transportation, and security situations for monitoring, controlling, and planning. Semantic 3D city models can be used in such contexts to spatially and semantically structure the many data items by relating them with the respective objects of the 3D city model. However, such models have been mostly static representations of the environment in the past, and their inclusion of the urban sensor landscape was not addressed in detail. Also the computation of urban (key performance) indicator values like building energy demands has not been supported by a dedicated conceptual model yet.
The presentation will present new frameworks based on semantic 3D city models and Model Driven Engineering (MDE). These frameworks complement the ISO 19109 standard on modeling geographic features. They provide concepts for the modeling of indicators for different application domains like mobility, energy, and security as well as for the semantic modeling of planned changes as transactions on 3D city models. It will be shown how these concepts are employed in Smart City use cases and how they relate to the CityGML standard. Furthermore, it will be shown how CityGML can be extended for representing dynamic object properties including sensor observations and time-dependent patterns for values.

Using OBIEE and Data Vault to Virtualize Your BI Environment: An Agile ApproachKent Graziano
First we interview the users, then we design a reporting model based on those interviews. We follow that up with mounds of ETL development to load the new model, basically keeping the user community in the dark during all that development. Does this sound familiar?
This presentation will demonstrate an alternative approach using the Data Vault Data Modeling technique to build a flexible, easily-extensible “Foundation” layer in our data warehouse with an Agile, iterative methodology. Relying on the Business Model and Mapping (BMM) functionality of OBIEE, we can rapidly virtualize a dimensional reporting model using the pattern-based Data Vault Foundation layer to decrease the time, and money, it takes to get BI content in front of end users. Attendees will see a sample Data Vault model designed iteratively and deployed to the semantic model of OBIEE.

BI: new of the buzz words that everyone is talking about but what is it? How can it be used to make a impact in my organization? How do I get started? This session was delivered for SharePoint Saturday Reston.
Because every organization produces and propagates data as part of their day-to-day operations, data trends are becoming more and more important in the mainstream business world’s consciousness. For many organizations in various industries, though, comprehension of this development begins and ends with buzzwords: “big data,” “NoSQL,” “data scientist,” and so on. Few realize that any and all solutions to their business problems, regardless of platform or relevant technology, rely to a critical extent on the data model supporting them. As such, Data Modeling is not an optional task for an organization’s data effort, but rather a vital activity that facilitates the solutions driving your business. Since quality engineering/architecture work products do not happen accidentally, the more your organization depends on automation, the more important the data models driving the engineering and architecture activities of your organization become. This webinar illustrates Data Modeling as a key activity upon which so much technology depends.

Delivering a Linked Data warehouse and realising the power of graphsBen Gardner
Linklaters is one of the world’s leading global law firms. The firm has a wealth of high value information held within our systems however due to the nature of these systems it is not always easy to leverage this value. Our goal was to improve decision making across the firm by transforming access to and ability to query data. To do this we wanted a solution that would combine our information, was easy to extend in an iterative fashion and would leverage our existing investment in business intelligence. To achieve this we chose to create a graph based warehouse using Linked Data. Data from our SAP Business Warehouse was combined with flat file and XML feeds from our systems of record and transformed into RDF via ETL services that loaded it into a triple store. To provide simple integration with our existing environment a SPARQL to OData service was deployed creating an OData compliant endpoint. Finally a model driven, mobile friendly, user interface was created allowing users to query, review results and explore the underlying graph. This talk will describe the approach we took and the lessons learnt.
Building Self-Service BI Solutions with Power Query
Through Self-Service BI, business units can personalize Business Intelligence to their needs and solve problems at a much faster
rate than any traditional BI solution. This is why businesses are looking to Self-Service BI to solve the smaller, but no less significant, problems that individual departments need addressed. The goal of this white paper is to focus on using and understanding one of Microsoft’s latest Self-Service BI tools called Power Query.
Power BI is a suite of business analytics tools businesses use for analyzing data and sharing insights. Power BI dashboards provide a 360-degree view for business users with their most important metrics in one place, updated in real-time, and available on all devices.
In this session, you will learn to use Microsoft Power BI (Business Intelligence) to develop reports. This is an introductory overview of Power BI to get you started.

Similar to Freebase, RDF and the Semantic Web (20)
With over 12 million entities and 350 million relationships, Freebase is an excellent resource for performing text analysis. One way to look at document "understanding" is to think about how the entities in the document are connected on a knowledge graph. This is similar to the "reconciliation" process that is used to grow Freebase itself.
The web is currently full of semantic hints, whether they are explicit (like those promoted by the Semantic Web) or implicit (like the use of blog widgets.) Using these hints, text analytic methods can get a toe-hold on the web corpus at large.
Presented at SES Chicago, December 2009. How using labeled links (vocabulary,) strong identifiers and standard markup formats such as HTML5 Microdata can improve SEO.
Presented at the Freebase NYC Workshop, December 2009. Covers basic MQL query construction, basic service calls and eMQL adapter construction. PHP Code can be found at http://dev.mqlx.com/~jamie/nyc2009

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
