Essay Of Prenatal Screening In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
In her novel, Frankenstein, Mary Shelley warns of the boundaries of scientific exploration. Victor
Frankenstein, a brilliant scientist, attempts to play God in resurrecting a corpse and creating new
life. This has disastrous effects which include the death of many characters throughout the novel.
All told, the story provides a cautionary tale of the attempts to play God in regards to scientific
advancement. This raises the question of how far is too far in terms of scientific exploration. With
the increasing popularity of eugenics in regards to prenatal screening, one can t help but wonder, is
this the dangerous idea of playing God that Shelley warned us about? One of the most common
forms of eugenics nowadays is prenatal sex selection.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During IVF, the egg is typically fertilized in a lab before being implanted into the uterus. Before
transferring the embryo into the uterus, some fertility clinics offer patients the option of choosing
what sex embryo they want. Although IVF is more commonly used for families struggling with
infertility rather than for the sole purpose of sex selection, sex selection is still an option. This
seems both futuristic and controversial but Codington Lacerte argues that prenatal sex selection
methods allow parents to make informed choices about the makeup of their families (Codington
Lacerte, Point: Sex Selection ). This type of eugenics is seemingly harmless because in choosing
a sex for their child, parents aren t really damaging society. However, by giving parents the ability
to choose whether they want a male or female child, the possibility of a skewed sex ratio greatens.
In countries where sex selection is common, gender biases are already skewing the sex. According
to Codington Lacerte, Americans also exhibit a son preference (Codington Lacerte, Counterpoint:
Sex Selection ). By 2009, over thirty countries, predominantly in Europe and the Asia Pacific
region, had

Interpreting The Kuleshov Effect In The Empty Hearse
Editing is the joining of different shots to create meaning, and can be one of the most significant
instruments of effect in film (Pudovkin). Russian film theorists Vsevolod Pudovkin and Lev
Kuleshov have coined specific methods of editing which can be employed in order to reveal a
deeper meaning (Sampson, Lecture 6.1). In the episode The Empty Hearse in the television show
Sherlock by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, the use of the Kuleshov effect, leitmotif, parallelism,
and simultaneity all work to emphasize the innate connection between best friends Sherlock
Holmes and John Watson, proving that they are the perfect pair. The use of the Kuleshov Effect in
this episode allows the audience to feel John s despair when thinking about Sherlock,... Show more

Simultaneity, also known as cross cutting, shows two events happening at the same time by
repeatedly cutting between each event (Sampson, Lecture 6.1). John becomes livid after finding
out that Sherlock had been lying to him this entire time, thus allowing him to grieve, and
decides he wants nothing to do with him anymore. Thus, they both try to go on with their lives,
as Sherlock searches for a new case, and John continues to see patients. However, this sequence
cross cuts between the two lives so that they explicitly connect to each other. When Mrs. Hudson
asks Sherlock about John, he replies, He made his position quite clear, which then cuts to a shot
of John s middle finger as he is putting on gloves. Then, it goes back to Sherlock and Mrs.
Hudson, and she asks, What did he say? to which Sherlock starts replying but gets cut off at F
which then cuts to John saying Cough? to one of his patients. Through the use of simultaneity in
this episode, it clearly shows that even if Sherlock and John try to have separate lives, they are still
connected because the two are meant to be

The Value Of An Athlete Identity
I asked numerous athletes when did they realize you had to have an identity outside of sports? It
took someone to talk to them for them to realize they must have an identity outside of sports.
Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Trevon Coley told me one of his goals is to be successful
outside of football. He said in high schoolhe realized footballwill not last forever. He soon had to
figure out what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Fast forward to now, he is enjoying his
time wearing number 99. He knows when his NFL career is over he wants to work with children

California Kid Ethos Pathos Logos
Alternative artist and songwriter,Rivers Cuomo of the band Weezer, in his song California Kids
claims that by letting go of all of people s high standards and just living a worry free life, then
people s problems will come to an end. He develops his argument by first drawing illustrations
between a life that is stressful and one that is more relaxed, then he uses juxtaposition to emphasize
the Californialifestyle, and finally, he uses pathos to appeal to people on an emotional level.
Cuomo s purpose is to convince his audience to join him in shedding the persona and
responsibilities of adulthood so that they may be California Kids. Throughout his song he creates a

For example, In your bare feet In mid January most people when they think mid January they
think snow and having to wear many layers of clothing because it is really cold, but the singers
purpose of juxtaposing January and bare feet is to tempt the audience with a promise of a
relaxing, warm, and amazing alternative. In other words why be cold and miserable when you
can be warm and happy, with your toes in the sand even in the winter. This is a metaphor for
why live a stressful life when you have options to change it. Another example is, Swimming in
the mystery which might refer to the Pacific Ocean that is a vast body of ocean. The singer s
purpose is to tell his audience that they have to have to take a leap of fate even though it can be
scary, like the vast ocean. Changing your life for the better should always be a choice you should
chose because it is for your own benefit. In the music video it shows a portrait of Jesus Christ, who
was resurrected, and a body of water, where Jesus Christ was baptized, this can be symbolic for
rebirth, something that the singer probably wants. The audience knows this because of the

Forensic scientists investigate crimes by collecting and analyzing physical evidence. They
specialize in DNA analysis or firearm examination. By performing tests on weapons or on
substances like fiber, glass, hair, tissue, and body fluids forensic scientist determine the importance
of the substance for a trial. Forensic scientists prepare reports to document their findings and the
laboratory techniques they used, to give to investigators. When criminal cases come to trial,
forensic scientist will give a testimony as an expert witness on laboratory findings collected at the
crime scene. Communication between other scientists is a key part in being a successful forensic
scientist. For instance, they may consult a medical expert about the exact time and cause of a death,
or another scientist who specializes in DNAtyping to match a DNA type to a suspect. Some
scientist might be exposed to hazardous chemicals, or toxic materials. But often are exposed to
human body fluids and firearms. These working conditions pose little risk only if safety procedures
are followed correctly (ScienceBuddies, n.d.). Forensic scientist work outside in all types or
weather, but spend a majority of their time in laboratories and offices. They work in groups with
specialists and other law enforcement, but specialist work only in laboratories. Scientist working
in laboratories usually works a standard workweek, although they may be on call outside of normal

Disadvantages Of Biometrics
There are various ways to implement biometric using current technology in this world. However,
which suit best for companies that want to implement their computer systems to check their
employee identifications. Also, there are people out there concerns that using biometrics system
will violate their privacy. Let s exam a few implementations regarding the biometricsthat the
technology is currently being used in the workforce. Biometrics have existed for a very long time
ago. People have used it and still used it in today s workforce. For instance, FBI uses Fingerprints
to verify a person s identification. The Government uses CAC Card to identify its employee using
the fingerprint on its chip and passports as well, etc.
Biometric is a system that detect a person s identification using a living person s behavioral
characteristics of that person such as fingerprints, hand gestures, voices, image scan like eyes, DNA
and other facial images. For example, FBI is implemented a new identification technology called
Next Generation Identification system. This new upgrade system will provide faster and more
accurate way to check someone s background like criminal history information for the FBI
agencies, law enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies. The Next Generation Identification
checks the fingerprint that matches with the database records.
Another implementation of biometrics is using authentication to verify if someone s logging the
computer at work. Like in the US

These tips are designed to help you have the most beautiful garden and lawn possible. So grab your
garden blower and let s begin the process. Just keep in mind to never walk on your grass if there is
a frost on it.
The first thing you will want to do is remove dead plants from the garden. These are the plants that
thrived in the warmer summer months and are now withered on the ground. By removing these
plants the overall appearance of your yard will greatly improve. During the removal process, you

Take your garden blower to it one more time just to ensure there was nothing left behind as well.
Then starting from the edge of your lawn, then working backwards fertilize your lawn. As you do
this process, be sure you have an even coating across the entire area. When you are done, make
sure you do a full watering to ensure that the area remains moist. In about a week, you will want to
reseed your entire lawn paying close attention to any bare or yellow patches that might turn up after
you have done the fertilizing process.
After you have setup your entire yard and have prepared it for the cooler months, be sure that
you follow the next piece of garden care advice. You will need to take your sprinkler system and
wrap it well. Any watering that you might need to do in the winter months should be done by hand
with a detachable hose. This will help you to prevent freezing and having a sprinkler system that
can cause your problems next year.
Something to keep in mind during this entire process is some plants can t tolerate the cold well. If
you are expecting a freeze at anytime, be sure that you cover weaker plants with a warm blanket or
plant cover. This way, you keep them looking great for the next

Immanuel Kant On Moral Education
Paper One: Kant on Moral Education
Jennifer Penkov: 1345217
Phil 444, Dr Alan McLuckie
Friday, February 12, 2016
Word Count: 1, 567 This paper will focus on Kant s account of a moral education as found in his
Lectures on Pedagogy. It will begin by discussing why Kant believed that education, specifically
moral education, is necessary for a human being to realize her Bestimmung (destiny), but not
necessary for non rational animals to reach their natural vocations. It will analyze the role a moral
education (the general development of morality) plays in becoming human and will continue by
outlining the structure and key points of Kant s hypothetical moral educational system. Finally this
paper will highlight possible conflict between education and autonomy (a concept vital to his
broader moral philosophy) but will ultimately argue that moral education is compatible with the
notion of the intelligible self. Kant makes it explicit in his work that the human being is the only
creature that requires education to reach its natural destiny. In order to fully make sense of this
notion, it is first necessary to briefly discuss the twofold nature of the human self as explained in
Critique of Pure Reason and developed in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals. The human
being is thought of as participating in both the empirical and intelligible realms. The empirical self
is sensual and determined, in that it participates in the natural world and is governed by the laws of
nature

ridesharing is a major process to avoid the congestion of vehicle in a particular place. This
process is nothing but sharing the car to travel more than one member on the same vehicle. Uber,
the transportation service has added this technique recently to manage the huge number of

Benefits Of Buying A Cruise Ships
Entertainment
There are multiple advantages and disadvantages that come with riding a cruise ships. Taking a
cruise can be very expensive and often times require people to save up for it. However, the time
spent on a cruise is well worth the money spent for it. An all inclusive cruise includes most meals, a
place to stay, and entertainment. Discounts for kids meals vary upon each ship. Adults over the age
of 21 do not have to worry about paying for alcohol in the all inclusive ship. Purchasing food,
beverages, and souvenirs at small shops on the boat is not included in the initial payment. If the

Choolesterol Error
Error in the metabolism of an individual is another major risk factor of atherosclerosis and it
involves the abnormal change of lipoproteins and changes in its functional roles (McCrindle, 2007).
The first main type of cholesterol is the low density lipoprotein (LDL) and it referred to as the bad
cholesterol because it attaches to the atherosclerotic lesions on the endothelium of the arterial wall
(Schaefer, 2010). The other type of cholesterol is the high density lipoproteins (HDL), it acts as a
scavenger and it is referred to as the good cholesterol, because it removes the cholesterol from the

The Cold War And The Fall Of The Soviet Union
Following the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union, questions regarding what the new world
order would began to arise. In the article published in 1993 The Clash of Civilizations? , Samuel
Huntington predicts that the conflicts of the new world order would be between civilization and
based in culture, rather than in ideology or economics (22). In his paper, he identifies seven (or
possibly eight) civilizations that will interact with each other, provided six reasons as to why these
civilizations will clash, recognizes the idea that civilizations other than the West are on the rise and
makes suggestions as to how the West should act if his initial is to become true. Since the

Huntington s argument is essentially that rather than the conflicts in the new world order being
economic or ideological, they will primarily stem from cultural sources and that the next phase in
world conflict will be between civilizations rather than within them (22). He began his article by
defining the nature of civilizations. In doing so, he defines a civilization as a cultural entity and
notes that civilizations are the highest cultural grouping of people and the broadest level of cultural
identity people have short of that which distinguishes humans from other species (22 23).
According to Huntington, the number of people within a civilization ranges that they are dynamic;
they rise and fall; they divide and merge (23). Huntington argues that of Arnold Toynbee s 21 major
civilization in A Study of History only 6 of them still exist in the contemporary world. He identifies
that the world order will be shaped by the way that the following seven, or possibly eight,
civilizations interact: Western, Confucian, Japanese, Islamic, Hindu, Slavic Orthodox, Latin
American, and possibly African (25). After identifying the major world civilizations, Huntington
presents six major reasons as to why these civilization will clash. For one, the differences that exist
between these entities are real and more importantly basic (25). His second argument is essentially
that the idea that society is becoming more globalized and that interactions

Aqua Fish Canada Inc. (AFC) Additional Information
May 2007 to April 2009 Update Over the past two years, AFC has faced more intense competition,
particularly from aquaculturists in Chile. In addition, Chilean output has increased the supply of
salmon and the Canadian dollar has strengthened in relation to the U.S. dollar. As a result, AFC has
been unable to meet its budgeted revenue targets. Stocks of unsold harvestable fish have increased,
as well as the corresponding cost of maintaining the fish, and the company barely made a profit in
fiscal 2009. In January 2009, AFC lost one of its largest retail customers, S F Seafood, to a new

Guy Mills provided the board with a summary of selected site and segment data (see Appendix
1), and reported that the decreased profits in 2009 were caused by the Site 3 problems, the
decrease in market value, the strengthening Canadian dollar versus the U.S. dollar, and the
increased feed costs. He also indicated that he expected the four sites to yield an average of 3.8
million kilograms (950,000 kilograms per site) of harvested fish per year, assuming that no further
unusual losses were incurred. Given the current market conditions and the risk of having to
decrease prices or lose export sales to the U.S., the board decided that the company should move
into other markets and diversify into shellfish farming. No dividends would be paid for the next
year or two to free up some cash to invest in new projects. The board directed Mills to investigate
establishing shellfish aquaculture sites and develop a business strategy for increasing the
profitability of the current salmon operations. They indicated that any proposed investment should
generate a minimum after tax return of 10% within five years. Shellfish Aquaculture Opportunity
Mills explored opportunities for diversifying into shellfish aquaculture. He found two potential
opportunities (a mussel farm and an oyster farm) and wondered which one should be pursued or
whether both should be pursued. A summary of the costs and yields for establishing these farms is

Madeleine Leininger Transcultural Nursing
While pursuing a doctorate in anthropology, Madeleine Leininger examined how cultures were
like one another, as well as, the differences in how cultural care was perceived and expressed by
people all over the world (Andrews Boyle, 2016). The words transcultural nursing was used by
Leininger to describe the combination of nursing practice and anthropology (Andrews Boyle, 2016).
From her studies, Leininger discovered eight factors that created challenges in society and health
care, which impacted her reason for developing the framework of transcultural nursing. The first
factor that she identified was how the movement of people not only within the same country but
also between countries had risen (Andrews Boyle, 2016). As one might expect, with this increase of

Leininger identified that with the increased use of technology to communicate with people from
all over the world, a conflict may occur if the person providing the care has different cultural
beliefs from the recipient of care (Andrews Boyle, 2016). Andrews Boyle (2016) talks of
Leininger s fourth challenge as being a higher incident of conflict among cultures globally that
impacts health care because of an increase of interactions between different cultures. Another
challenge health care providers face is with the number of people who travel to other areas for
work (Andrews Boyle, 2016). This is true even today with more and more nurses becoming
traveling nurses, as well, medical mission trips to underprivileged countries to provide medical
treatment. Health care providers may be faced with a higher incident of legal disputes if one is
ignorant of other cultural beliefs, negligent in meeting health care needs of those from other
cultures or impose one s beliefs or values onto someone that has a different cultural background

towards gender that manifest through female villains in children s cartoons are what will be
examined in this analysis. In text A, the trope of the female villain (Sedusa) as a lying seductress
is explored. Text B shows how the female villain Femme Fatale is portrayed as confrontational,
aggressive and man hating . Text C concerns the teenage villain Camille Leon, who is depicted as a
spoiled, shallow and materialistic Valley Girl stereotype. All of these villains are represented as
having unfavourable attributes that have been unfairly ascribed to women, or attributes that are
considered undesirable in a woman dishonest, deceitful, fake,... Show more content on

him that he should get used to being undermined and disrespected. The imperative be a good little

performance without error. List three types of errors that can arise in financial reporting.
Three types of potential errors in financial reporting include: 1. error introduced by rigidity in
accounting rules; 2. random forecast errors; and 4
3. systematic reporting choices made by corporate managers to achieve specific objectives.
Accounting Rules. Uniform accounting standards may introduce errors because they restrict
management discretion of accounting choice, limiting the opportunity for managers superior
knowledge to be represented through accounting choice. For example, SFAS No. 2 requires firms to
expense all research and development expenditures when they are occurred. Note that some
research expenditures have future economic value (thus, to be capitalized) while others do not
(thus, to be expensed). SFAS No. 2 does not allow managers, who know the firm better than
outsiders, to distinguish between the two types of expenditures. Uniform accounting rules may
restrict managers discretion, forgo the opportunity to portray the economic reality of firm better
and, thus, result in errors. Forecast Errors. Random

Market Structure: The coffee industry is an extremely competitive one. However, the market
structure of the coffee industry and specifically the coffee bean industry that provides the raw
materials for Yuban could be described as an oligopoly. The specific characteristics of this
oligopoly are, however, more reminiscent of a cartel because a relatively small number of suppliers
control the supply and distribution of coffee beans globally (Igami, 2011). Consequently, Yuban,
which is a brand within the Kraft Foods umbrella, has limited choice in selecting its supplies. The
coffee bean industry was controlled officially through a cartel structure until 1989 under the
International Coffee Agreement or ICA but thereafter market competition with new entrants such as
Vietnam eroded the control of this official cartel organization (Igami, 2011). Yet, because coffee
bean production is largely limited to certain geographic regions, these countries governments
express a great deal of control over which entities control production and distribution.
Competitive Barriers: There are a number of significant competitive barriers within the coffee bean
and coffee grind industry. While virtually any firm can purchase the raw materials or even the
finished product in the form of ground coffee, the packaging and distribution of the product is a
much more sophisticated endeavor. The most significant

Internal Conflict In Marigolds By Eugenia Collier
The short story Marigolds by Eugenia Collier discusses many struggles. The main protagonist
Lizabeth battles internally between her inner child and adult and externally with the effects of the
Great Depression. The internal conflict concerns Lizabeth s hesitation toward becoming an adult.
The external focuses on how the Great Depressioncauses her family to struggle financially. These
strifes directly influence each other.
In the external conflict, Lizabeth and the rest of her shantytown confront poverty and
unemployment. The African American population, including the protagonist, faces the worst of
the Great Depression. The Depression that gripped the nation was no new thing for us, for the
black workers of rural Maryland had always been depressed (Collier, par. 3). The already poverty
stricken family scrambles to find basic necessities, such as clothes and work. As Lizabeth s mother
says, Everybody out of work now, you know that... Ain t nobody got nothing [sic] nowadays (37,
39). Her mother now heads the household; whereas, her father now sobs like a defenseless child.
This man versus society directly influences the internal conflict. ... Show more content on

Juvenile Crime Law Is A Subcategory Of Juvenile Law
Juvenile Crime Law is a subcategory of Juvenile Law. Although a type of criminal law, juvenile
crime law only deals with under age individuals, who are treated very differently than adults in
criminal law, and usually have their own courts of law (Juvenile Criminal Law, n.d.). When it
comes to crime, kids usually go through a different process than adults. But they still have to face
consequences ( Juvenile Crimes Juvenile Justice Nolo.com, n.d.).
Juvenile Criminal Law is a relevant issue in today s juvenile criminal Justice system. A growing
number of states are re examining and amending juvenile laws to reduce unnecessary reliance on
secure confinement. Minors under the age of 18 years, who commit a crime, or otherwise violate
established rules and statutes, are identified as juvenile delinquents, juvenile offenders, youthful
offenders, or delinquent minors. When the police arrest a minor, or juvenile, there are differences
from arresting an adult. While the juvenile may be handcuffed, fingerprinted and photographed as
adults can, teen offenders must be handled carefully ( Arresting Kids Lawyers.com, n.d.). In
juvenile cases, a status offense involves conduct that would not be a crime if it was committed by
an adult in other words, the actions are considered to be a violation of the law only because of the
youth s status as a minor (typically anyone under 18 years of age). Some examples of status
offenses include underage drinking, skipping school, and

Tumors can either be small cell lung cancer (SCLC) or non SCLC (NSCLC). Non SCLC accounts
for most of the incidences and carries a 5 year survival rate of 15%.1 On average, it is the
metastases of the primary tumor that cause death. NSCLC is often diagnosed late where available
treatment options such as surgery or radiation will be ineffective .2 Because of its nature, metastasis
of cancer is not fully understood as it cannot occur in vitro.2 It has been discovered that the cascade
of events follows similar pathways in each type of metastatic cancer: detachment of cells from
ECM, invasion of neighboring tissue, intravastation into the blood or lymph system, and
subsequent extravasation at a distal site of the metastatic lesion.1 Treatments have included
chemotherapy, radiation, surgery if applicable and other targeted therapies like immunotherapy and
EGFR inhibitors.2 In the past, due to the difficulty of treating and ineffectiveness, chemotherapy
was not the treatment when the patient was diagnosed with NSCLC. Instead, supportive care was
offered. Meta analysis has demonstrated that chemotherapy has offered slight improvements in
quality of life and reduction of symptoms since.3 These chemotherapy drugs work best when
combined with a source of platinum, which can be difficult given the substantial risk of toxicities.4
To combat the difficulties of treating NSCLC, and deliver the chemotherapy that could potentially
increase survival rates while lowering toxicity exposure, science has turned to its new wonder child:

The Hunger Games Dystopian Society
A Dystopian society can be defined as an imperfect world, a place marked by class distinction,
poverty, turmoil, and dehumanization. There are two modern works that represent these ideas to
society , Divergent and The Hunger Games. Both novels portray a cataclysmic decline in society in
the way that these dystopian elements are present. The novels referenced above feature an
omnipotent authority in the form of Snow from The Hunger Games and Jeanine and Eric from
Divergent. The factions, Divergent, and capital, The Hunger Games, represent totalitarian
government, and oppression and cruelty elicited through the large wage gap cause mistrust among
its people. With this type of government, there are always the figureheads, a benevolent leader type

In order to help my community to grow I will be helping inform people of how inappropriate it

receiving the email saying I was in trouble. My mind went to how will this affect my future and
will I be expelled from this, and after receiving the letter with my violations and possible
punishment I became even more scared to be expelled. Setting up the meeting with the Judicial
board was different because the system was something I never saw before and without the

The recent wealth of data should give us more confidence in a cause and effect relationship, but
we are not nearly to the point of proof. It took decades and hundreds of studies before the Surgeon
General was willing to declare that smoking causes cancer.] But it has been less clear just how
alcohol works to protect the body against heart disease and death. A new study from researchers at
the University Hospital of Zurich, Switzerland. identifies a mechanism for how alcohol favorably
effects arterial muscle cells. According to Wilhelm Vetter, M.D., and colleagues, alcohol, when
consumed around mealtime, reduces the proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMC) within the
arteries. SMC growth is a key element in the development of atherosclerosis, which commonly leads
to heart attacks and strokes.
The study found that the ingestion of alcohol equivalent to two glasses of wine with a high fat
meal resulted in a 20% decrease in the growth of arterial muscle cells. Several researchers have
suggested that the apparent health benefits of wine ingested at mealtime may be due to the ability
of alcohol and other phenolic compounds in wine to counter adverse effects of fatty foods during
the critical digestive phase. Renaud has written of the positive effect of wine during meals on
platelet aggregation, finding that wine consumed with meals is absorbed more slowly and thus has
a prolonged effect on blood

Wordsworth is influenced by the wild: I wandered lonely as a cloud , When all at once I saw a
crowd, a host, of golden daffodils , Continuous as the stars that shine and twinkle on the milky
way, they stretched in never ending line along the margin of a bay: ten thousand saw I at a
glance, tossing their heads in sprightly dance , The waves beside them danced; but they out did
the sparkling waves in glee , I gazed and gazed but little thought what wealth the show to me had
brought , and For oft, when on my couch I lie in vacant or in pensive mood, they flash upon that
inward eye [...] and then my heart with pleasure fills, and dances with the daffodils. Another
phrase, which indicates that the flowers were so beautiful that no true poet could be sad in their
presence, also builds upon Wordsworth s relationship with nature. These particular lines in I
Wandered Lonely as a Cloud show how Wordsworth s mood shifts from somber and lonely to
joyous and content. The lines also show how the gorgeousness of nature sticks with

The Senate Should Be Abolished Of The Senate
The Senate plays a key role in tandem with the House of Commons, in the operation of Canada s
government, some people think that the Senate should be abolished; however without the Senate,
The right to bear arms could become true for Canada. The Senate should be reformed; abolishing
or keeping the Senate at its current state would be unjust. The current Senate is not elected,
effective, nor equal. If the Senate is kept at its current state, it will continue to operate fine,
however the Senate can be much more effective at what it does if it gets amended. Currently the
Senate is not elected, equal, nor efficient. People who comprise the Senate are selected by the
governor general on the advice of the Prime Minister, so those selected most likely will act in good
intention towards the Prime Minister. The Senate, unlike the House was designed to represent
Canadas regions, however it over represents some provinces at the expense of others. For example
currently, Quebec and Ontario each have 24 seats, the same amount of seats as the four Western
provinces as a whole. Atlantic Canada, with a mere 7% of the population, holds a unproportional
29% of the seats. Canadians deserve laws that are fair and free of errors, and the Senate contributes
to that. The Senate s job is to foster national unity, however currently they act in the interest of
themselves and the Prime Minister rather than in the interest of the people.
Abolishing the Senate is country suicide. If there is a

The Themes Of Fear In Ballad Of Birmingham, By Dudley Randall
Various poems project vividness by the specific descriptive words that are written by the poets.
These simple words not only create vivid scenes, but also have a lively breathe. From a bombing,
to a glimpse of faith, to a rather strange situation, the words written in these poems will make the
reader want to hold their breath. The mood in the poems Ballad of Birmingham, Since there s no
help, and When my love swears that she is made of truth robustly reveal author s purpose on the
topics of fear, hope, and contentment, which embody the three most essential emotions that
describe human nature.
In the Ballad of Birmingham, by Dudley Randall, the mood of fear is presented. From end to
finish, the sprinkle of intense expressive words strongly shape the mood in this poem, instilling
fear in not only the characters but the audience as well. The point where the poem peaks is when
the author creates a jarringly suspenseful moment when he states For when she heard the
explosion, Her eyes grew wet and wild. The heavy words presented such as explosion, wild, and
fire, show the level of fear the mother felt; almost breathtaking. Randall uses the dialogue between
the mother and daughter to deceive the audience by allowing them to believe that the child will be
going safely to church but then instantly deviates the situation into something horrid in a matter of
a few words. Deviating the mood enables Dudley Randall to depict how fear is an essential emotion.
The Ballad of Birmingham was written in response to a bombing that occurred in Birmingham,
Alabama on September 15th, 1963. The mood Dudley Randall creates in his poem adequately
describes the panic and the disruption of the people on that fateful day while creating a compelling
perspective of one of the victims and her mother. The article talks in detail about the events of the
bombing and how often bombs occurred in Birmingham. In fact, bombings occurred so frequently
that the town got dubbed Bombingham. A specific detail that was written in the article that points
to the topic of this poem is when it states that beneath ...piles of debris in the church basement, the
dead bodies of four girls... had been discovered. This historical evidence is crucial

Power In Studs Terkel s Work
A policeman and an auditor, two completely different jobs, with an identical component: power.
In Studs Terkel s novel Working, a compilation of working people s interviews, he uses two
particular men with two exceedingly different jobs to showcase that sometimes those who we
envy or look up to because of their power may in reality of nothing special at all due to the fact the
higher power in every job. To begin there s Renault Robinson, an African American police
officer in
Chicago. Being a police officer Robinson is an everyday form of power, many people being
afraid of being caught for incidents from speeding to shoplifting. However, in Robinson s position
is wasn t given more power than the average street person. Instead it was slowly... Show more

Fred Roman, an auditor at one of the largest accounting firms at the time of the interview. At the
firm the hierarchy runs from Staff Assistant, Senior, Manager and Partner with Partner s being
the owners of the firm (264). For clarification Mr. Roman was a Staff Assistant 5, an assistant in
his fifth year when the interview was conducted. So in the grand scheme he was still at the
bottom of the pole when looking at the company. Roman exemplifies this when he discusses that
when the numbers don t calculate right during an audit it is considered a gray area, because it is
rarely a simple decision, but rather a tough one left up to the partner, because they get the last
say in what to tell the customer. Whilst this may all seem ordinary it becomes complicated when
you delve into how the partner makes their decision on what they decide to do about
inconsistencies or worrying numbers. Roman clues us in by explaining if we slight the company
if I find something that s going to take away five hundred thousand dollars of income this year
they may not hire us back next year (264). This is where Studs truly outlines the similarity
between Roman and Robinson s job. These two jobs are intended to be for the good of society and
to keep patrons in check. However, ironically it is what is in the best interest of authoritarian in
each situation. What will keep their agenda on plan without causing any stir? That is what

The Dust Bowl During The Great Plains Region
The dust bowl was a devastating time in the United States history that occurred during the 1930s,
caused by atypically high temperatures, perpetual drought and new farming methods. Vigorous
winds disturbed the topsoil, resulting in overwhelming dust storms which destroyed an immense
amount of farms, in upwards of 100,000. These storms devastated the source of income for the
farmers affected. The dust bowlwas located in the Great Plainsregion, which includes the states of
Oklahoma, Kansas, and Northern Texas. Thousands of workers were faced with an impasse,
become a laborer, doing mindless work for miniscule wages, or move away and search for better
work. (San JosГ© State University) The people brought to these decisions that chose to... Show

The mother could have effortlessly pawned off her ring, and gotten a few decent meals, or even
a new pair of clothes out of it, however she chose not to. She would rather work so hard that she
doesn t even have time to tell her son not to eat the dirt, or even have time to care for herself.
The mother s hair is unkempt, and her tired eyes tell that she hasn t slept well in a long time, but
she would rather provide for her family than herself. She is trying her best and working towards a
better future. Though they are in the middle of nowhere, the ring means that they are still together.
The ring is a beacon through the storm, a symbol of what was, and hope for what will be. Lange
intended for the viewer to apprehend how vital family was for the migrant workers.
In this image, Lange is also trying to demonstrate that children were still able to be children, and
were still innocent, through all of the turmoil. Although the mother knows that she has security in
her family, she still feels guilt, anger, and regret. The mother was forced to uproot her family and
trek across the country just to find work, and that does not happen without bitter feelings being
formed. On the other hand, her baby has been through these same events, but he remains unscathed,
and innocent. He does not have one worry, he is only concerned about the dirt that he is

The Women s Liberation Movement
Beginning in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century women began to vocalize their
opinions and desires for the right to vote. The Women s Suffrage movement paved the way to the
nineteenth Amendment in the United States Constitution that allowed women that right. The
Women s Suffrage movement started a movement for equal rights for women that has continued to
propel equal opportunities for women throughout the country. The Women s Liberation Movement
has sparked better opportunities, demanded respect and pioneered the path for women entering in
the workforce that was started by the right to vote and given momentum in the late 1950s. The
focus of The Women s Liberation Movement was idealized off The Civil Rights Movement; it...

In America the Women s Liberation movement has been embraced by how women are valued
for more than baring children, but we often do not consider the ramifications the transition has
had on our society. Feminist Marlene Dixon has said that although women have done wonderful
work in ending oppression for themselves, oppression still exist, only in psychological sense of
the word. Dixon writes, Individualized struggles between men and women around the
oppressive attitudes and objective sexual and social privileges is the consequence of the
psychological oppression that is taking place in the minds of women, and men, who are being
hyper sexualized in the need for attention. Taking into consideration the amount of emphasis is
placed on a woman s sex appeal Dixons ideas cannot be disregarded. With women increasing
their assets in the work force and decreasing a mans need in relationships, women are marketing
their bodies to prove that they are still can be desirable and relying on the opposite sex. By
allowing ourselves to be used as sexual properties in advertising it is giving men and other women
the notion that women are only desirable if they can be physically attracted to the masses. As
feminist, and women these sexual barriers need to be brought down to emphasize that

Meaningless Life In Ecclesiastes
After I read Ecclesiastes, I learned that everything is meaningless if you don t believe in God.
Our hearts still have a hole in it and only God could fill up that emptiness in our lives. According
to the writer, he hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to...[him].
All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. (Ecclesiastes 2:1 26). This proves that life
without God is meaningless and empty, you would hate life because there isn t a meaning to it.
The quote gives us an example of a meaningless life; it is like chasing after the wind because it s
pointless and no use, it isn t beneficial. This is disappointing to know because I think that life can
be meaningful if you make the best out of it. Try your best in everything and don t give up, don t
be lazy and actually try contributing to this world because a lot of things could surprise you. In
Life Shaping Decisions , it states that God has a plan for everyone and we should follow it, or
else you will be tragically disappointed. Solomon told this in a perspective most people pursue in
life, which is a interest centered life. In Life Shaping Decisions it tells us that doing whatever
interests isn t always the smartest way to go, you have to consider other things. The person in the
story just did whatever he wanted to do and at the end he felt empty and that everything was
meaningless. This is because he didn t accept God into his life, so he didn t follow God s plan. The

Book Of Revelation Research Paper
The majority of Revelation depicts a world at war. The Book of Revelation shows the struggles
people have been through because of sin. God keeps His promises to His people despite what
mess they have created (Class Notes). The Book of Revelation shows that God is the ultimate
winner, having the greatest power, and God s children will also be winners in the end, if they
remain faithful to God, by entering the gates of heaven.
God is the ultimate winner and His love is the greatest power in the world. God defeats all evil and
He will renew the world. The Book of Revelation introduces the restoration when John hears a
voice from the throne in heaven saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell
with them; they will be his people,

  • 2. Essay Of Prenatal Screening In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein In her novel, Frankenstein, Mary Shelley warns of the boundaries of scientific exploration. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant scientist, attempts to play God in resurrecting a corpse and creating new life. This has disastrous effects which include the death of many characters throughout the novel. All told, the story provides a cautionary tale of the attempts to play God in regards to scientific advancement. This raises the question of how far is too far in terms of scientific exploration. With the increasing popularity of eugenics in regards to prenatal screening, one can t help but wonder, is this the dangerous idea of playing God that Shelley warned us about? One of the most common forms of eugenics nowadays is prenatal sex selection.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During IVF, the egg is typically fertilized in a lab before being implanted into the uterus. Before transferring the embryo into the uterus, some fertility clinics offer patients the option of choosing what sex embryo they want. Although IVF is more commonly used for families struggling with infertility rather than for the sole purpose of sex selection, sex selection is still an option. This seems both futuristic and controversial but Codington Lacerte argues that prenatal sex selection methods allow parents to make informed choices about the makeup of their families (Codington Lacerte, Point: Sex Selection ). This type of eugenics is seemingly harmless because in choosing a sex for their child, parents aren t really damaging society. However, by giving parents the ability to choose whether they want a male or female child, the possibility of a skewed sex ratio greatens. In countries where sex selection is common, gender biases are already skewing the sex. According to Codington Lacerte, Americans also exhibit a son preference (Codington Lacerte, Counterpoint: Sex Selection ). By 2009, over thirty countries, predominantly in Europe and the Asia Pacific region, had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Interpreting The Kuleshov Effect In The Empty Hearse Editing is the joining of different shots to create meaning, and can be one of the most significant instruments of effect in film (Pudovkin). Russian film theorists Vsevolod Pudovkin and Lev Kuleshov have coined specific methods of editing which can be employed in order to reveal a deeper meaning (Sampson, Lecture 6.1). In the episode The Empty Hearse in the television show Sherlock by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, the use of the Kuleshov effect, leitmotif, parallelism, and simultaneity all work to emphasize the innate connection between best friends Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, proving that they are the perfect pair. Simultaneity, also known as cross cutting, shows two events happening at the same time by repeatedly cutting between each event (Sampson, Lecture 6.1). John becomes livid after finding out that Sherlock had been lying to him this entire time, thus allowing him to grieve, and decides he wants nothing to do with him anymore. Thus, they both try to go on with their lives, as Sherlock searches for a new case, and John continues to see patients. However, this sequence cross cuts between the two lives so that they explicitly connect to each other. When Mrs. Hudson asks Sherlock about John, he replies, He made his position quite clear, which then cuts to a shot of John s middle finger as he is putting on gloves. Then, it goes back to Sherlock and Mrs. Hudson, and she asks, What did he say? to which Sherlock starts replying but gets cut off at F which then cuts to John saying Cough? to one of his patients. Through the use of simultaneity in this episode, it clearly shows that even if Sherlock and John try to have separate lives, they are still connected because the two are meant to be ... • 11. Immanuel Kant On Moral Education Paper One: Kant on Moral Education Jennifer Penkov: 1345217 Phil 444, Dr Alan McLuckie Friday, February 12, 2016 Word Count: 1, 567 This paper will focus on Kant s account of a moral education as found in his Lectures on Pedagogy. It will begin by discussing why Kant believed that education, specifically moral education, is necessary for a human being to realize her Bestimmung (destiny), but not necessary for non rational animals to reach their natural vocations. It will analyze the role a moral education (the general development of morality) plays in becoming human and will continue by outlining the structure and key points of Kant s hypothetical moral educational system. Finally this paper will highlight possible conflict between education and autonomy (a concept vital to his broader moral philosophy) but will ultimately argue that moral education is compatible with the notion of the intelligible self. Kant makes it explicit in his work that the human being is the only creature that requires education to reach its natural destiny. In order to fully make sense of this notion, it is first necessary to briefly discuss the twofold nature of the human self as explained in Critique of Pure Reason and developed in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals. The human being is thought of as participating in both the empirical and intelligible realms. The empirical self is sensual and determined, in that it participates in the natural world and is governed by the laws of nature ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Market Structure: The coffee industry is an extremely competitive one. However, the market structure of the coffee industry and specifically the coffee bean industry that provides the raw materials for Yuban could be described as an oligopoly. The specific characteristics of this oligopoly are, however, more reminiscent of a cartel because a relatively small number of suppliers control the supply and distribution of coffee beans globally (Igami, 2011). Consequently, Yuban, which is a brand within the Kraft Foods umbrella, has limited choice in selecting its supplies. The coffee bean industry was controlled officially through a cartel structure until 1989 under the International Coffee Agreement or ICA but thereafter market competition with new entrants such as Vietnam eroded the control of this official cartel organization (Igami, 2011). Yet, because coffee bean production is largely limited to certain geographic regions, these countries governments express a great deal of control over which entities control production and distribution. Competitive Barriers: There are a number of significant competitive barriers within the coffee bean and coffee grind industry. While virtually any firm can purchase the raw materials or even the finished product in the form of ground coffee, the packaging and distribution of the product is a much more sophisticated endeavor. The main protagonist Lizabeth battles internally between her inner child and adult and externally with the effects of the Great Depression. The internal conflict concerns Lizabeth s hesitation toward becoming an adult. The external focuses on how the Great Depressioncauses her family to struggle financially. These strifes directly influence each other. In the external conflict, Lizabeth and the rest of her shantytown confront poverty and unemployment. The African American population, including the protagonist, faces the worst of the Great Depression. The Depression that gripped the nation was no new thing for us, for the black workers of rural Maryland had always been depressed (Collier, par. 3). The already poverty stricken family scrambles to find basic necessities, such as clothes and work. As Lizabeth s mother says, Everybody out of work now, you know that... Although a type of criminal law, juvenile crime law only deals with under age individuals, who are treated very differently than adults in criminal law, and usually have their own courts of law (Juvenile Criminal Law, n.d.). When it comes to crime, kids usually go through a different process than adults. But they still have to face consequences ( Juvenile Crimes Juvenile Justice Nolo.com, n.d.). Juvenile Criminal Law is a relevant issue in today s juvenile criminal Justice system. A growing number of states are re examining and amending juvenile laws to reduce unnecessary reliance on secure confinement. Minors under the age of 18 years, who commit a crime, or otherwise violate established rules and statutes, are identified as juvenile delinquents, juvenile offenders, youthful offenders, or delinquent minors. When the police arrest a minor, or juvenile, there are differences from arresting an adult. While the juvenile may be handcuffed, fingerprinted and photographed as adults can, teen offenders must be handled carefully ( Arresting Kids Lawyers.com, n.d.). In juvenile cases, a status offense involves conduct that would not be a crime if it was committed by an adult in other words, the actions are considered to be a violation of the law only because of the youth s status as a minor (typically anyone under 18 years of age). Some examples of status offenses include underage drinking, skipping school, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Non SCLC accounts for most of the incidences and carries a 5 year survival rate of 15%.1 On average, it is the metastases of the primary tumor that cause death. NSCLC is often diagnosed late where available treatment options such as surgery or radiation will be ineffective .2 Because of its nature, metastasis of cancer is not fully understood as it cannot occur in vitro.2 It has been discovered that the cascade of events follows similar pathways in each type of metastatic cancer: detachment of cells from ECM, invasion of neighboring tissue, intravastation into the blood or lymph system, and subsequent extravasation at a distal site of the metastatic lesion.1 Treatments have included chemotherapy, radiation, surgery if applicable and other targeted therapies like immunotherapy and EGFR inhibitors.2 In the past, due to the difficulty of treating and ineffectiveness, chemotherapy was not the treatment when the patient was diagnosed with NSCLC. Instead, supportive care was offered. Meta analysis has demonstrated that chemotherapy has offered slight improvements in quality of life and reduction of symptoms since.3 These chemotherapy drugs work best when combined with a source of platinum, which can be difficult given the substantial risk of toxicities.4 To combat the difficulties of treating NSCLC, and deliver the chemotherapy that could potentially increase survival rates while lowering toxicity exposure, science has turned to its new wonder child: ... Atlantic Canada, with a mere 7% of the population, holds a unproportional 29% of the seats. Canadians deserve laws that are fair and free of errors, and the Senate contributes to that. The Senate s job is to foster national unity, however currently they act in the interest of themselves and the Prime Minister rather than in the interest of the people. Abolishing the Senate is country suicide. If there is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Themes Of Fear In Ballad Of Birmingham, By Dudley Randall Various poems project vividness by the specific descriptive words that are written by the poets. These simple words not only create vivid scenes, but also have a lively breathe. From a bombing, to a glimpse of faith, to a rather strange situation, the words written in these poems will make the reader want to hold their breath. The mood in the poems Ballad of Birmingham, Since there s no help, and When my love swears that she is made of truth robustly reveal author s purpose on the topics of fear, hope, and contentment, which embody the three most essential emotions that describe human nature. In the Ballad of Birmingham, by Dudley Randall, the mood of fear is presented. From end to finish, the sprinkle of intense expressive words strongly shape the mood in this poem, instilling fear in not only the characters but the audience as well. The point where the poem peaks is when the author creates a jarringly suspenseful moment when he states For when she heard the explosion, Her eyes grew wet and wild. The heavy words presented such as explosion, wild, and fire, show the level of fear the mother felt; almost breathtaking. Randall uses the dialogue between the mother and daughter to deceive the audience by allowing them to believe that the child will be going safely to church but then instantly deviates the situation into something horrid in a matter of a few words. Deviating the mood enables Dudley Randall to depict how fear is an essential emotion. The Ballad of Birmingham was written in response to a bombing that occurred in Birmingham, Alabama on September 15th, 1963. The mood Dudley Randall creates in his poem adequately describes the panic and the disruption of the people on that fateful day while creating a compelling perspective of one of the victims and her mother. The article talks in detail about the events of the bombing and how often bombs occurred in Birmingham. In fact, bombings occurred so frequently that the town got dubbed Bombingham. A specific detail that was written in the article that points to the topic of this poem is when it states that beneath ...piles of debris in the church basement, the dead bodies of four girls... had been discovered. This historical evidence is crucial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fred Roman, an auditor at one of the largest accounting firms at the time of the interview. At the firm the hierarchy runs from Staff Assistant, Senior, Manager and Partner with Partner s being the owners of the firm (264). For clarification Mr. Roman was a Staff Assistant 5, an assistant in his fifth year when the interview was conducted. So in the grand scheme he was still at the bottom of the pole when looking at the company. Roman exemplifies this when he discusses that when the numbers don t calculate right during an audit it is considered a gray area, because it is rarely a simple decision, but rather a tough one left up to the partner, because they get the last say in what to tell the customer. Whilst this may all seem ordinary it becomes complicated when you delve into how the partner makes their decision on what they decide to do about inconsistencies or worrying numbers. Roman clues us in by explaining if we slight the company if I find something that s going to take away five hundred thousand dollars of income this year they may not hire us back next year (264). This is where Studs truly outlines the similarity between Roman and Robinson s job. These two jobs are intended to be for the good of society and to keep patrons in check. However, ironically it is what is in the best interest of authoritarian in each situation. What will keep their agenda on plan without causing any stir? That is what ... The Dust Bowl During The Great Plains Region The dust bowl was a devastating time in the United States history that occurred during the 1930s, caused by atypically high temperatures, perpetual drought and new farming methods. The mother could have effortlessly pawned off her ring, and gotten a few decent meals, or even a new pair of clothes out of it, however she chose not to. She would rather work so hard that she doesn t even have time to tell her son not to eat the dirt, or even have time to care for herself. The mother s hair is unkempt, and her tired eyes tell that she hasn t slept well in a long time, but she would rather provide for her family than herself. She is trying her best and working towards a better future. Though they are in the middle of nowhere, the ring means that they are still together. The ring is a beacon through the storm, a symbol of what was, and hope for what will be. Lange intended for the viewer to apprehend how vital family was for the migrant workers. In this image, Lange is also trying to demonstrate that children were still able to be children, and were still innocent, through all of the turmoil. Although the mother knows that she has security in her family, she still feels guilt, anger, and regret. The mother was forced to uproot her family and trek across the country just to find work, and that does not happen without bitter feelings being formed. On the other hand, her baby has been through these same events, but he remains unscathed, and innocent. He does not have one worry, he is only concerned about the dirt that he is ... In America the Women s Liberation movement has been embraced by how women are valued for more than baring children, but we often do not consider the ramifications the transition has had on our society. Feminist Marlene Dixon has said that although women have done wonderful work in ending oppression for themselves, oppression still exist, only in psychological sense of the word. Dixon writes, Individualized struggles between men and women around the oppressive attitudes and objective sexual and social privileges is the consequence of the psychological oppression that is taking place in the minds of women, and men, who are being hyper sexualized in the need for attention. Taking into consideration the amount of emphasis is placed on a woman s sex appeal Dixons ideas cannot be disregarded. With women increasing their assets in the work force and decreasing a mans need in relationships, women are marketing their bodies to prove that they are still can be desirable and relying on the opposite sex. By allowing ourselves to be used as sexual properties in advertising it is giving men and other women the notion that women are only desirable if they can be physically attracted to the masses. As feminist, and women these sexual barriers need to be brought down to emphasize that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Meaningless Life In Ecclesiastes After I read Ecclesiastes, I learned that everything is meaningless if you don t believe in God. Our hearts still have a hole in it and only God could fill up that emptiness in our lives. According to the writer, he hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to...[him]. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. (Ecclesiastes 2:1 26). This proves that life without God is meaningless and empty, you would hate life because there isn t a meaning to it. The quote gives us an example of a meaningless life; it is like chasing after the wind because it s pointless and no use, it isn t beneficial. This is disappointing to know because I think that life can be meaningful if you make the best out of it. Try your best in everything and don t give up, don t be lazy and actually try contributing to this world because a lot of things could surprise you. In Life Shaping Decisions , it states that God has a plan for everyone and we should follow it, or else you will be tragically disappointed. Solomon told this in a perspective most people pursue in life, which is a interest centered life. In Life Shaping Decisions it tells us that doing whatever interests isn t always the smartest way to go, you have to consider other things. The person in the story just did whatever he wanted to do and at the end he felt empty and that everything was meaningless. This is because he didn t accept God into his life, so he didn t follow God s plan. The parable in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
