This document summarizes a study comparing soil moisture measurements from the SMOS satellite to other passive microwave sensors over West Africa. The SMOS satellite showed higher sensitivity to changes in soil moisture and vegetation compared to AMSR-E and TMI. Preliminary validation with in-situ ground measurements was promising for SMOS, though more validation is still needed. The monsoon season will provide an important test of SMOS's ability to capture changes in soil moisture and vegetation.
