Experience Story: Implementing Test automation in your organizationDerk-Jan de Grood
Test automation is omnipresent these days. Still, many organisations struggle with implementation. What tools do you select, do you allow teams to pick their own effectieve solution, or do you strive for a more cetralized approach. The answer lies in a carefull balance, where you allow new fit for purpose solutions to emerge, but reduce wildgrowth in the tool landschape.
This presentation explains how we deal with testautomation at DeltaLloyd. In our different departments created working solutions, that are bundled in a Delta Lloyd broad vision on test automation.
In our development we have , ie the test manager of Delta Lloyd with the external consultant , looked at how we could align supply and demand. We used the analogy of the fruit basket. Fruit represents the various types of test automation solutions. With business drivers as a starting point, we did prioritze de development of test automation solutions, use piloting to test the solutions in practize. When a pilot is finished susessfully it was made availble for the the other departments. The fruit is ripe and IT managers can pick it from the fruit basket, knowing that implementation will be easy and swift. The central organization provides solution, knowledge and support.
The presentation will eloborate on the model. How does it help to define the fruit, and the support towards other departments. The presentation covers a wide range from tools, via required skills, resources & processes, upto the aligment with the business. For this we define 4 groups of people, the wholesale, gardener, auctioneer and Consumer, each with its own goals and skill set.
In our presentation we want to share our approach. It benefits Delta Lloyds test automation and surely can help other companies as well.
Implementing Test Automation, a story about changing insights and experiences Derk-Jan de Grood
In this presentation I explain a simple strategy for implementing Test Automation in your organization. A simple strategy? I tell the story of my experience so far and look back in retrospective to the presentations I gave at the Test Automation Day before.
In this presentation I state that
- Organizational Maturity (like measured with TPI or TMMi) should not raise a threshold for getting started
- In order to become good in Test Automation, we need to get started and learn from our mistakes (fail forward)
- There is a shift from technique and tool selection toward selling the business case
- But the real implementation is a process of organizational change, where people, and budgets play a key role.
- People need to learn their new roles, need to work with new processes and you need to have a good story if you want to interfere with projects.
- In the end, I conclude that once you completed the journey, and got the organization to start with test automation, you end up with the technical challenges again: What tool are you going to use, what architecture, and how do you write effective scripts….
A simple strategy? I am still learning.

This document proposes an approximate method for measuring the functional size of mobile apps using the COSMIC functional size measurement method. It begins with an overview of why measuring mobile apps is important and how they differ from other applications. It then provides a short introduction to the COSMIC method. The proposed method makes some basic assumptions about mobile app architecture and defines types of functional processes that can be quantified in COSMIC measurement units. The method aims to allow quick yet accurate sizing of mobile apps according to COSMIC standards.

The document discusses a study that analyzed the effect of highlighting error categories in COSMIC functional size measurement (FSM) training on the accuracy of FSM. The study analyzed FSM assignments from 2010-2013, where the first two years did not highlight errors and the second two years did. There was a sharp decrease in many common error categories, such as those related to listing FPs and naming, in the later years when errors were highlighted, indicating highlighting errors improves FSM accuracy. However, some core measurement rules saw little change. The study concludes highlighting frequent errors in training significantly increases FSM accuracy.

This document discusses measuring complexity in models used at Ericsson for telecommunication systems. It describes Ericsson's work with LTE technology and the growing size of their system models. The research process involved literature reviews, model analysis, developer interviews and workshops to define complexity metrics and develop a formula to automatically rank model complexity. The final result was a set of complexity thresholds for different metrics that could predict complexity rankings provided by developers.
Estimating packaged software - Eric van der Vliet - NESMA najaarsbijeenkomst ...Nesma
The document proposes a generic framework for estimating the cost of implementing packaged software. It presents a model with size-dependent and size-independent cost drivers for the realization stage of implementation. The framework aims to standardize cost estimation and allow comparisons across different vendors and implementation partners. Next steps include expanding the model to cover the full implementation lifecycle and maintenance stages.
Iwsm2014 defect density measurements using cosmic (thomas fehlmann)Nesma
This document discusses measuring defect density in software projects using the COSMIC functional size measurement method. It proposes:
1) Counting the number of defects found based on the number of affected data movements, as defined by the COSMIC model, rather than just defect repository entries.
2) Adjusting the test size measurement to match the number of data movements executed in tests.
3) This allows defect density to be calculated more precisely and supports benchmarking across projects.
Begroten als het model = de applicatie = de documentatie - Gerard Ohm - NESMA...Nesma
This document discusses model-driven development using the Be Informed platform. It makes three key points:
1. With Be Informed, there is no clear distinction between design and development - the design is directly implemented. This impacts traditional function point analysis for estimating.
2. Productivity depends highly on customer maturity and ability to make decisions. Experience of the implementation team also impacts productivity.
3. A "Be Structured" approach is recommended, starting with architecture and business function models to provide structure before detailing and growing applications live. This provides better predictive value for estimating than traditional function points.

This document discusses measuring and evaluating productivity related to functional and non-functional requirements (NFRs). It describes the evolution of software sizing methods from lines of code to function points and issues with only considering functional size. The document introduces SNAP (Software Non-functional Assessment Process) as an NFR sizing method and shows how to measure nominal, functional, and overall productivity by accounting for functional size units (FSUs), non-functional size units (NFSUs), and organizational factors. Measuring NFR productivity allows for a more complete assessment, especially for projects focused on maintenance rather than new features.
IWSM2014 MEGSUS14 - GQM on energy for SaaS - CETICNesma
This document discusses energy goals and metrics for cloud services. It proposes two goals: 1) assessing the effectiveness of a software's energy consumption behavior under different deployment configurations and workloads, and 2) characterizing a software's energy efficiency by identifying the energy used by different components and features. It also provides templates for questions to evaluate these goals, such as comparing the energy used by virtual machines running different software configurations and processing various workloads. The overall aim is to help cloud service providers optimize their software's energy usage.

This document discusses benchmarking and collecting historical project data. It notes that the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group (ISBSG) collects data on software development projects and applications maintenance. However, the rate of new project submissions is decreasing and data is needed for new technologies. The Nesma working group is focusing on ways to increase data submissions to the ISBSG repositories, trade off between number of data questions and attributes needed, and alternative methods for collecting data.
Iwsm2014 verifying the accuracy of automation tools for cosmic measurement ...Nesma
The document presents a verification protocol for assessing the accuracy of automation tools for finite state machine (FSM) measurement. It describes two case studies: 1) measuring an AUTOSAR-based steer-by-wire system using an FSM automation algorithm, and 2) measuring 77 Simulink specifications using a prototype industry tool. The automation tool showed over 98% accuracy compared to manual measurement in both cases. The document concludes that FSM automation is helpful but tools must be carefully verified to ensure accurate measurement.

The Use of Functional Size in the Industry.pdfNesma
In this webinar, the emphasis is on the use of Functional Size in the Industry, and we focus on several use cases where functional size helps organizations to make impactful decisions based on objective metrics and data.
While traditional performance metrics often measure individual output or adherence to pre-defined plans, measuring performance in agile teams requires a different approach. Agile teams operate in iterative cycles, prioritizing adaptability and learning over rigid goals. So, why do organizations still measure their performance?
By using the right metrics in the right way, organizations can empower their agile teams to thrive and deliver exceptional results.

This document discusses using objective metrics for agile cost estimation and monitoring. It notes that while agile development is challenging to estimate and measure, sizing software using functional points allows for estimation and benchmarking using data. Story points alone do not provide enough information to manage value creation over time. Key metrics like productivity, defects, and where teams spend their effort need to be measured to understand performance. Effort registration is crucial for project control to understand functionality delivered and productivity. Functional size measurement creates reference points to help manage projects.
Nesma event June '23 - Easy Function Sizing - Introduction.pdfNesma
The document introduces a new method called Easy Functional Sizing (EFS) that aims to provide a simpler alternative to the more complex High Level Function Point Analysis method. EFS is designed to be aligned with modern development methods, have fewer debates around function point types, and be easy to learn. It maintains the same level of assessment as High Level FPA but only has 4 pages of definitions and rules organized into 3 components. Initial analysis shows EFS results are comparable to High Level FPA with less than a 2% difference on average. Feedback is requested from reviewers knowledgeable and not knowledgeable in FPA to test if EFS provides enough depth.
The journey of UNISON Cost Engineering in the field of automotive software cost estimation started in 2018. The expectation is that in 2030 the cost of software will be 50% of the total production cost of a car. To help the OEM get a proper understanding of the software development cost they need to use some form of size measurement to compare, challenge and control the cost of software development by the software vendors.

The document discusses different methods for software sizing, both historically and currently. It covers lines of code, functional sizes, story points, and more. It also discusses sizing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software by considering features, objects, and the required cognition. COTS cognition involves understanding features, referenced and configured tables, and input/output/inquiry services or classes. The percentage of COTS functionality required is also a factor. Overall, the document advocates that there are many viable sizing methods and standards are important, while not dismissing lines of code when appropriate.
