This enables nurses to be more effective in initiating nursing assessments and serving as a patient advocate.
Background:
Leininger (2014) defines culture as a set of values, beliefs, and traditions that are led by a specific group of people and handed down from generation to generation. Culture is learned, shared, values transmitted, a way of life, and practices of a particular group that guides day-to-day thinking, decisions, and actions.
Technological advances have transformed our social world into what Marshall McLuhan termed a global village. In other words, we need to think of the entire world when we talk about our social environment. Computers, satellites, and communication technology have brought the world closer together and made cross-cultural encounters an everyday occurrence.
Cultural competence is the ability to provide holistically effective care to patients who come from different cultures. In nursing, there is a requirement to be sensitive to communication, both verbally and non-verbally. It is an evolving process that depends on self-awareness, knowledge, attitude, and development and application of skills. Nurses should never make assumptions about their patient’s beliefs; for example, stating that all Jehovah’s Witnesses will refuse blood transfusions is a generalization.
Being culturally insensitive can lead to stereotyping, discrimination, racism, and prejudice. Some cultures do not call elders by their first names. Nurses should always ask how the patient wants to be addressed. Some cultures would not allow a male nurse to examine a female patient so the team should be aware of this cultural issue. People may have different beliefs about medical care and treatment in the United States, and the nurse needs to offer respect and gain knowledge of the patient’s situation.
In the healthcare systems of today, healthcare providers are diverse. Nurses have much to offer from their own culture. Culture is universal and dynamic. It is taught to other members of the health care team as a matter of sharing. Distinctions between culture, ethnicity, race, and religion may be confusing. Think of it this way, you are a member of the subculture of the student, you are also a member of an ethnic group, (e.g. Portuguese-American from the Azores), a racial group (white, African American), and a religion (Roman Catholic, Jewish), each with its own set of beliefs and values. So, your culture is a blend of all of those characteristics (Treas & Wilkinson, 2014).

Literature" Angeline O'Neill discusses Canadian First Nations and Australian Aboriginal

academy. Perspectives on indigenous wisdom and ways of knowing
are presented from an ecological position linking human development
concerns to a wholistic view of human development through the Cree

Mahasweta Devi’s texts offer the critique of civilization, the dichotomy of nature and culture and the threat posed by forces of modernization. She offers penetrating insights into the connection between ecological and economic concerns. She is known as a committed artist, documenting the past and continuing struggle of the people. But creative writing is only one side of her literary persona. There are several other dimensions of her persona concerns activities and priorities which are distinct but closely interrelated. She cannot be branded by any conventional label such as writer, social activist, reporter, editor or organizer of peoples groups at the grass root level. Each one of these titles is partially true. All these aspects of her personality considered together sharply distinguish her from her contemporaries not just in West Bengal but in the country also. As a creative writer, her contribution is noteworthy, both in significance and volume. Her writings originate from her intimate knowledge of the ground realities. Her stories deal with a diverse range of issues related to the deprivation, degradation of life and environment, exploitation and struggles of the laboring poor and the underprivileged, the landless and small peasants, sharecroppers, bonded labor, contract labor and miners in West Bengal and Bihar. She has a deep sympathy with the tribal people and she documents their life, customs, culture and their problems in the wake of modernization. Her essays deal with the degradation of the ecosystem and lopsided forestation policy of the government which has ruined the primitive life and culture of tribal people. Devi urges for sustainable development concept so that the progress can be made without ecological devastation that is being perpetrated by industrialists and government officials. Devi s perspective on ecology forms an integral part of her entire creative output because she finds a close connection between man and nature. She believes that the survival of mankind is possible only when human beings acknowledges and respect Mother Nature rather than usurp it for personal profit. Her fiction unveils her concern about the alarming imbalance between man and nature due to globalization, privatization and capitalistic policies of different governments. She finds that consistent murder of nature has severely affected the life of poor deprived tribal and the rural women who depend on forests for livelihood and other basic requirements. These oppressed communities are the worst sufferers in the process of globalization and privatization of resources. As a writer, Devi feels that a creative artist plays a vital role in destroying the spurious elements of contemporary civilization and helps in reconstructing the future society. Reducing the number of people living in extreme poverty throughout the world is clearly one of the great moral challenges of our time. Although the issue is by no means absent from what we study and teach, as educators in the United States we appear to be falling short in the task of ensuring that our students are adequately informed about world poverty, its consequences, and the ways in which it can be reduced. Is it possible that some of the reluctance to deal with the topic stems from the fact that it may have uncomfortable conclusions for our own lives?
If we take seriously the idea that the value of a human life does not diminish when we cross national boundaries, then we ought to be giving a much higher priority to reducing world poverty. I have in mind a broad re-envisioning of what we teach.
We should not limit so important a topic to specialized courses on international development (valuable as .

human development. Various aspects of Medicine Wheel concepts are

academy. Perspectives on indigenous wisdom and ways of knowing
are presented from an ecological position linking human development
concerns to a wholistic view of human development through the Cree

Mahasweta Devi’s texts offer the critique of civilization, the dichotomy of nature and culture and the threat posed by forces of modernization. She offers penetrating insights into the connection between ecological and economic concerns. She is known as a committed artist, documenting the past and continuing struggle of the people. But creative writing is only one side of her literary persona. There are several other dimensions of her persona concerns activities and priorities which are distinct but closely interrelated. Her stories deal with a diverse range of issues related to the deprivation, degradation of life and environment, exploitation and struggles of the laboring poor and the underprivileged, the landless and small peasants, sharecroppers, bonded labor, contract labor and miners in West Bengal and Bihar. She has a deep sympathy with the tribal people and she documents their life, customs, culture and their problems in the wake of modernization. Her essays deal with the degradation of the ecosystem and lopsided forestation policy of the government which has ruined the primitive life and culture of tribal people. Devi urges for sustainable development concept so that the progress can be made without ecological devastation that is being perpetrated by industrialists and government officials. Devi s perspective on ecology forms an integral part of her entire creative output because she finds a close connection between man and nature. She believes that the survival of mankind is possible only when human beings acknowledges and respect Mother Nature rather than usurp it for personal profit. Her fiction unveils her concern about the alarming imbalance between man and nature due to globalization, privatization and capitalistic policies of different governments. She finds that consistent murder of nature has severely affected the life of poor deprived tribal and the rural women who depend on forests for livelihood and other basic requirements. These oppressed communities are the worst sufferers in the process of globalization and privatization of resources. As a writer, Devi feels that a creative artist plays a vital role in destroying the spurious elements of contemporary civilization and helps in reconstructing the future society. Reducing the number of people living in extreme poverty throughout the world is clearly one of the great moral challenges of our time. Although the issue is by no means absent from what we study and teach, as educators in the United States we appear to be falling short in the task of ensuring that our students are adequately informed about world poverty, its consequences, and the ways in which it can be reduced. Is it possible that some of the reluctance to deal with the topic stems from the fact that it may have uncomfortable conclusions for our own lives?
If we take seriously the idea that the value of a human life does not diminish when we cross national boundaries, then we ought to be giving a much higher priority to reducing world poverty. I have in mind a broad re-envisioning of what we teach.
We should not limit so important a topic to specialized courses on international development (valuable as .

accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
