1. A foreign body is any external material that enters the body through a wound, natural opening, or is inserted or swallowed. There are two types - loose or embedded.
2. Foreign bodies in the eye, ear, throat, or nose can cause pain, impaired vision/hearing, watering, redness, and difficulty breathing. Treatment depends on the location but generally involves examining to locate and remove the object if possible or safely flushing it out. Medical care is needed to avoid further injury.
3. Sharp objects in the throat or nose pose more risk of damage so medical attention is especially important in those cases to prevent harm. Reassurance of the patient is also part of treatment.
