Rising energy costs also increased transportation costs. The UN World Food Program executive director called the price increases a "silent tsunami that respects no borders." There were violent riots in over 21 countries as a result of the crisis.

CIFOR scientist Terry Sunderland gave this presentation on 8 September 2012 at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Jeju, South Korea, during a session co-hosted by CIFOR titled ‘Managing wild species and systems for food security’.
Food Production

maintaining its biodiversity? The answer could be in new approaches to
integrating agriculture and biodiversity.
CIFOR scientist Terry Sunderland explores the links between forests,
biodiversity and food security in this presentation, which he recently gave at the
2nd World Biodiversity Congress in Malaysia to more than 150 delegates.

Farmer suicides are a major issue affecting India's agriculture and food security. Small and marginal farmers who make up 80% of agricultural households are particularly vulnerable. Suicides are often caused by debt from crop failures due to drought, lack of irrigation, rising input costs, and lack of institutional support. A case study of Andhra Pradesh in the 1990s found that economic liberalization reduced state support for agriculture and increased farmer indebtedness, leading to thousands of suicides. Addressing this crisis requires improving access to credit, irrigation, crop insurance, extension services, and alternative livelihoods to help farmers survive difficulties and feel pride in their profession.
Food crop failure & Malnutition
Crop failures can result from adverse weather conditions, pests, diseases, or poor farming practices and negatively impact food prices, nutrition, and local economies. Climate change exacerbates these risks by increasing extreme weather events and reducing crop yields. It also threatens food access by raising food prices when supply is low and decreases nutritional value by reducing protein and micronutrient content in crops. Food waste is another issue, with about a third of global food production lost between farm and market or market and table. International cooperation on sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and food systems is needed to ensure global food security.
Food revision sheets
This document discusses sustainability in food production. It addresses environmental, socio-cultural and economic aspects of sustainability. Environmentally, food must be produced without undue degradation of soil, overuse of water or unacceptable pollution. Socio-culturally, rural communities must retain traditions and cultural values while producing sufficient local food. Hunger and Famine in Africa
There are several causes of hunger and famine in Africa including drought which ruins harvests, lack of access to land and technology for small-scale farmers, and rising food prices. This leads to economic problems as many Africans live on less than $1 per day and countries rely on food imports. Proposed solutions include microloans to start small businesses and generate income to purchase food, and tree planting which could increase food production over time by preventing erosion and improving climate conditions for farmers. Tree planting is considered the best solution as it will offer sustainable resources and jobs in the long run.

Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

- 3. FOOD TRADE AND SECURITY 1 billion people are hungry in the world 75% of the world’s poor live in rural areas and depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Today deaths related to hunger outnumber war deaths by 5 to1. Recent increases in food prices may push another 100 million people below the poverty line.
- 4. WHO SUFFERS MOST FROM HUNGER? Hunger is most pronounced in the rural areas of Africa and Asia Especially in regions prone to drought: the Horn of Africa and Somalia Changes in the global food markets affect global hunger and poverty
- 5. FACTORS CAUSING FOOD INSECURITY Local Factors: Poverty, which reduces purchasing power Land and Gender; insecure tenure is the reality of the majority of poor farmers Women produce up to 80% of the food despite owning only 20% of the land. Temperatures in Africa are expected to rise faster than global ones. Political neglect; governments intervention in food production and marketing was limited until recently. Only 8 govts have achieved the Maputo goal of 10%.
- 7. GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROPS GM crops are exposed to foreign genes to stimulate growth and enhance quality. Proponents of GM crops say: they store better, have better nutritional quality, tolerate herbicides, lack of water, extremes of temperature. The risks to GM crops include: health risks to humans, danger to the environment.
