FOOD & OUR DIET
Food is in fact that fuel that keeps us going like the petrol in cars, coal in engines and diesel in trucks . Our body can be compared to a machine and is often called the living machine
Difference between machines and living beings MACHINES Only one kind of fuel is needed by a particular machine to do work, e.g. car-petrol. Only one kind of fuel is sufficient to run the machine. There is a heavy loss of parts due to wear and tear. This needs replacement. LIVING BEINGS Different organisms need different types of food as fuel, e.g. tiger-meat; cow-plants Different types of foods are needed to maintain and run a body. Just one kind is not enough. A proper healthy diet helps to maintain, repair and replace all the worn out parts of the body.
MACHINES A machine does not grow in size as it grow older . Energy is released at very high temperature. Machines can be switched on or off. LIVING BEINGS They grow in size as they grow older. Growth may stop after a certain age. Energy is released at low temperatures; in the human body at 37ºC (normal body temperature). They function throughout, and cannot be switched off.
“ Food is the basic commodity which is absolutely essential to keep a living being alive & healthy.”
For living organisms, food is more than a fuel.
Healthy food gives our bodies the tools they need to: build bones and muscles - GROWTH repair and replace worn out cells- REPAIR keep all systems working- ENERGY keep us healthy.- HEALTH So it is really important that we give our bodies the right kinds of food to do the job. If we don't eat food, then our bodies don't work. If we don't eat the right food, our bodies don't work as well as they can.
WHAT ARE THE RIGHT KIND OF FOOD ? WHAT IS OUR DIET ?

When our food contain all the six chemical substances in right proportion .
NUTRIENTS They are- Carbohydrates Proteins Fats Mineral salts Vitamins Water Nutrient are chemical components of food that supply nourishment to the body. They are required by the body in right amounts and They must be eaten regularly. They are essential for good health.. If one or more are lacking from our diet, we may become ill.
CLASSIFICATION OF FOOD/ FUNCTIONS OF FOOD FOOD ENEGRGY GIVING FOODS BODY BUILDING FOODS PROTECTIVE & REGULATORY FOODS Carbohydrates,Fats.proteins proteins Vitamins & minerals Cereal, pulses, roots &tubers sugars & fats & oils Milk ,egg, meat, fish Pulses, oil seeds and nuts Milk, egg, fish, liver Green leafy veg .& some fruits
A diet which contains all these substances in right proportions is called COMPLETE OR BALANCED DIET

TO MAINTAIN A BALANCED DIET MUST CONTAIN FOOD ITEMS, FROM EACH OF THE FOLLOWING GROUPS
Bread, cereal, rice, pasta and noodles group This is the biggest group because you need to choose most of your daily food from here . YOU GET: carbohydrates (car-bow-hide-rayts), the food your body uses for energy. B vitamins some calcium (cal-see-um) iron fibre, which helps move the food along through your gut (intestines). You need  5-9 servings of these every day.
Vegetables group Lots of vegetables are very good for you, and there are lots of different ones around. You get : vitamins minerals Carbohydrates fibre You need 4 or 5 servings of these every day
Fruit There are heaps of different fruits, including canned and dried, so it is pretty easy to eat plenty. You get: vitamins carbohydrates fibre minerals. These types of foods keeps us healthy You need   2 or 3 servings every day
Milk, yoghurt and cheese group This group (sometimes called dairy products) is pretty important for growing kids. You get: calcium protein Vitamins These types of foods help to build & repair our bodies. You need 2 to 4 servings every day.
Meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, nuts and legumes This group is just as important to keep you healthy, your body doesn't need as much from this group as the others. You get: protein iron Vitamins minerals You need a half to 2 servings from this group each day This group is just as important to keep you healthy, but you can see from the size of the serving on the plate that your body doesn't need as much from this group as the others. 'Poultry' just means chicken, turkey and other birds.
Fats and oils Fats and oils are not in the healthy food circle.  They are down in one corner as foods that you need a bit of but not too much. Your body still needs them, but they can be found in other foods like meat and dairy products. These types of foods also give us Energy.
To eat a healthy diet: eat enough food from each group every day choose different kinds of foods from each group every day (it gets boring eating the same thing all the time doesn't it?) eat plenty of plant foods (the two biggest groups). eat some animal foods (meat and dairy products). eat little from the 'sometimes' foods. drink lots of WATER! get plenty of exercise
