Introduction to food Packaging:
 In today's society, packaging is pervasive and essential.
 It surrounds, enhances and protects the goods we buy,
from processing and manufacturing, through handling
and storage, to the final consumer.
 Without packaging, materials handling would be a
messy, inefficient and costly exercise and modem
consumer marketing would be virtually impossible.
Introduction
Introduction
Definitions of packaging
There are many ways of defining packaging
Reflecting different emphases.
For example:
 A means of ensuring safe delivery to the
ultimate consumer in sound condition at
optimum cost.
 A coordinated system of preparing goods
for transport, distribution, storage, retailing
and end-use.
 A techno-commercial function aimed at
optimizing the costs of delivery while
maximizing sales (and hence profits).
 Packaging Situation In World
 In 2017 the total value of the packaging globally
will be $851 billion according to the latest exclusive
study.
 The Future of Global Packaging to 2022, shows that
packaging demand will grow steadily at 2.9% to reach
$980 billion in 2022.
 Customer convenience is the top priority for the vendors
in the global packaging market.
 Several packaging companies are focusing on new
packaging designs or redesigning the existing packaging
especially in consumer goods.
 Packaging Situation In World
 Consumers prefer such packaging that requires minimum time and effort to
open, carry, and store such as zippers enclosure, tear notches, peel-off lids,
hang hole features, and microwavable pouches

 Packaging Situation In World
Introduction
 Packaging situation in India:
 The packaging industry in India is expected to reach
$ 73 billion in 2020 from $ 32 billion in FY 15,
(FICCI and TSMG)
 India is one of the top five markets for packaged
food in the world and the second-largest in Asia
 The Indian packaging industry constitutes about
4 percent of the global packaging industry.
 The per capita packaging consumption in India is
quite low at 4.3 kgs,
 Packaging Situation In India
Needs of Packaging
 It keeps the product intact and the product remains safe
from environmental factors.
 It provides aesthetics to the product and attracts
customers.
 Packaging plays a crucial role in selling the product.
 Packaging provides protection to the product from
damage.
 Packaging provides information and transfer
Information such as the origin of the product, its
weight, its content and other useful information.
 Packaging plays an important role in brand
creation, brand awareness and brand
development.
 It also provides the business the opportunity
to rebrand its products.
 Packaging provides the edge to business for
marketing their products.
Needs of Packaging
Function of Packaging
The basic functions of packaging are
 Containment:
 Protection:
 Preservation
 Information
 Convenience
Function of Packaging
 Containment:
 Depends on the product’s physical form
and nature.
 For Example, a hygroscopic free-flowing
powder or a viscous and acidic Tomato
concentrate
 All products must be contained before they
can be moved from one place to another.
 The "package", whether it is a bottle of cola
or a bulk cement rail wagon, must contain
the product to function successfully.
Function of Packaging
 Containment:
 Without containment, product loss
and pollution would be wide spread.
 The containment function contribution
to protecting the environment
 Faulty packaging could result in major
pollution of the environment
Function of Packaging
Protection
 This is often regarded as the primary function
of the package: to protect its contents from
outside environmental effects.
 Prevention of mechanical damage due
to the hazards of distribution
 For example, the products like biscuit,
jam, chips, etc., need to be protected
from environmental contact.
Function of Packaging
 Preservation
Prevention or inhibition of chemical changes,
biochemical changes and microbiological spoilage
Function of Packaging
 Information
Information about the product: legal requirements,
product ingredients, use etc.
Function of Packaging
 Convenience
For the pack handlers and user(s) throughout
the packaging chain
Convenience features such as ease of access,
handling, and disposal; product visibility;
Function of Packaging
Presentation:
Material type, shape, size, color, merchandising display
units etc.
Function of Packaging
Communication:
 A package functions as a "silent salesman".
 The modem methods of consumer marketing
would fail were it not for the messages
communicated by the package.
 The ability of consumers to instantly
recognize products through distinctive
branding and labeling enables supermarkets
to function on a self-service basis.
