Reflection:
I’ve decided to create a documentary as part of the moving image brief. My documentary is to be
mostly influenced by Louis Theroux’s objective style as well as the types of topics he covers. I wanted
to create something like this as Louis Theroux’s documentaries interest me greatly and it was important
for me to want to watch what I create. He covers subject areas that are often ignored and offers an
impartial view on them. This is important to me as he rarely imposes bias on the viewer and I feel that
this is the best way for people to experience and learn about said topics as it allows them to form their
own opinion.
I enjoy documentaries and often watch them in my spare time so creating one was quite appealing to
me. I enjoy to inform and educate people on topics that they may not know too much about and a
documentary is the perfect outlet for this.
My main audience will be 18-24 year olds. I fit into this age range therefore I feel I could create
something that appeals to those within this category and do it successfully. The topic of my
documentary is also somewhat of a modern and growing phenomenon amongst younger adults and so
it would make sense to tailor this documentary to them.
The documentary itself will appear on the streaming platform YouTube. This is due to the length (5 min
maximum required in brief) and mostly due to my target audience not really watching TV anymore.
Their main source of video entertainment comes from YouTube and Netflix. This is due to the fact that
they can watch whatever they want whenever they want to and don’t have to wait for specific
scheduling.

Chosen Structure
I've decided on this structure for my project as it appeals to me most. I felt having a
summary of the documentary in the beginning would give too much away about the
whole film, which could result in the documentary being less entertaining. The
viewers would know what to expect and there wouldn’t be much point in watching
the whole thing. I also feel that the summary would be too similar to the trailer for
the documentary. The attention-grabbing clip in the beginning is enough to entice
people to want to understand the context of the clip, thus making them watch the
whole documentary. Starting immediately with the title screen would be quite
abrupt and wouldn't set the tone for the rest of the film. There wouldn’t be anything
to grab the attention of viewers either, nor does it give them a point to look forward
to within the documentary.
Fonts
Font Two
Font
Font five
III
III
I searched on DaFont.com for fonts and
chose ones that I felt reflected my topic of
veganism. I had a bit of trouble deciding
between the five of them and so I asked
several of my peers which fonts they
preferred in order to gain a second
opinion. I explained to them that I wanted
the font to reflect nature and to also be
bold and eye catching. I used the results
to influence my final decision. To keep
track of which ones they preferred, I kept
a tally next to each font.
I
I
Final Font
Font three seems like a middle ground out of all the options I had chosen. I wanted
to have a font that seemed less sleek and constructed, and more natural as
veganism is often associated with nature. This font appears like handwriting and has
inconsistencies, adding to the natural essence of it. Green also felt like an
appropriate colour as, again, it is associated with greatly with nature. The title will be
written in this font so it needed to be bold and to also convey the topic in some way.
Some of the other fonts I considered seemed too thin (1 and 4) and so they wouldn’t
stand out as much as this one does. They also insinuate something slightly sinister.
Those that weren’t too thin didn't have the same earthy qualities (2 and 5). If I were
to create more documentaries, I would always have the font of the title screen relate
to the topic of the film.
This font and words I have chosen is to represent my brand. This font would appear on
each title screen for every documentary, in a colour that correlates with the topic of the
documentary. This would ensure recognisability as the font will be consistent. The font is
gentle and doesn’t distract from the main title, however it’s still legible. The font will
appear slightly smaller than the main title in order to avoid any distraction from the main
title.
Location Recces
The location recces are for me to be able to choose
where I think would be suitable for establishing shots
and shots taken from above.
Creating a colour scheme was somewhat of a
challenge as my objective style of documentary
uses natural lighting and is focused on the truth
and correct information, rather than creating a
specific atmosphere or mood with lighting and
colours. Instead of using colours to enforce a
feeling, I used them to create connotations and
a brand.
Colour Scheme
The colour scheme I’m using
for the advertisements and
the title screen are the ones
found in the events logo. This
makes sense to me as it helps
create a sort of branding for
my documentary. The colour
green is also a common motif
for the entire project. Like I
mentioned in the font section
of this powerpoint, green has
connotations with nature and
veganism.
Colour Scheme
Colour Scheme
Whilst filming I will be
wearing a brown shirt like
the one pictured to the right.
Brown is a neutral colour
that doesn’t inflict much
emotional response and will
solidify my neutrality as a
reporter. Brown is also not
that distracting, therefore
allowing the viewer to focus
on the discussion and
content.

Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
Not allowed to film inside the venue Conduct interviews outside the venue as people
enter/leave
Event is cancelled Attend when new dates are announced
Lose/forget equipment Use phones for sound and recording
Not allowed to access balcony Find somewhere accessible where a higher
shot can be attained
Participants refuse to sign consent form Interview other people
Public transport is unavailable/out of budget use other forms of transport (i.e. taxi, uber,
friends and family) and have each crew member
pay a percentage of the total price
Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
Overcrowded areas could result in crew
members and the public being injured
Avoid overcrowded areas. Assess an areas to
see whether it is safe to film
Steep steps leading up to town hall could result
in someone falling
Spread equipment responsibility evenly
throughout the group so no one has an extra
burden and can focus on their footing better
Equipment could cause injuries to those
around (i.e. from falling over, being an
obstruction)
Set up equipment in areas with few people or
create a space for set up and filming
A fire could start within the town hall and could
result in injury or death
become familiar with fire escapes and
determine an escape route that the whole crew
are aware of
Some of the crew members may have health
issues that could flare up (i.e. asthma, allergies)
Ensure they have the correct medication and
information on how to deal with it and inform
the rest of the crew on how to assist
Production Schedule
Day/Lesson Tasks

This is due to the fact that they can watch whatever they want whenever they want to and don’t have to wait for specific scheduling.

  • 5. Title screen Full documentary Intro consisting of attention grabbing clip from doc Chosen Structure I've decided on this structure for my project as it appeals to me most. I felt having a summary of the documentary in the beginning would give too much away about the whole film, which could result in the documentary being less entertaining. The viewers would know what to expect and there wouldn’t be much point in watching the whole thing. I also feel that the summary would be too similar to the trailer for the documentary. The attention-grabbing clip in the beginning is enough to entice people to want to understand the context of the clip, thus making them watch the whole documentary. Starting immediately with the title screen would be quite abrupt and wouldn't set the tone for the rest of the film. There wouldn’t be anything to grab the attention of viewers either, nor does it give them a point to look forward to within the documentary.
  • 6. Fonts Font Two Font Font five III III I searched on DaFont.com for fonts and chose ones that I felt reflected my topic of veganism. I had a bit of trouble deciding between the five of them and so I asked several of my peers which fonts they preferred in order to gain a second opinion. I explained to them that I wanted the font to reflect nature and to also be bold and eye catching. I used the results to influence my final decision. To keep track of which ones they preferred, I kept a tally next to each font. I I
  • 7. Final Font Font three seems like a middle ground out of all the options I had chosen. I wanted to have a font that seemed less sleek and constructed, and more natural as veganism is often associated with nature. This font appears like handwriting and has inconsistencies, adding to the natural essence of it. Green also felt like an appropriate colour as, again, it is associated with greatly with nature. The title will be written in this font so it needed to be bold and to also convey the topic in some way. Some of the other fonts I considered seemed too thin (1 and 4) and so they wouldn’t stand out as much as this one does. They also insinuate something slightly sinister. Those that weren’t too thin didn't have the same earthy qualities (2 and 5). If I were to create more documentaries, I would always have the font of the title screen relate to the topic of the film.
  • 8. This font and words I have chosen is to represent my brand. This font would appear on each title screen for every documentary, in a colour that correlates with the topic of the documentary. This would ensure recognisability as the font will be consistent. The font is gentle and doesn’t distract from the main title, however it’s still legible. The font will appear slightly smaller than the main title in order to avoid any distraction from the main title.
  • 9. Location Recces The location recces are for me to be able to choose where I think would be suitable for establishing shots and shots taken from above.
  • 10. Creating a colour scheme was somewhat of a challenge as my objective style of documentary uses natural lighting and is focused on the truth and correct information, rather than creating a specific atmosphere or mood with lighting and colours. Instead of using colours to enforce a feeling, I used them to create connotations and a brand. Colour Scheme
  • 11. The colour scheme I’m using for the advertisements and the title screen are the ones found in the events logo. This makes sense to me as it helps create a sort of branding for my documentary. The colour green is also a common motif for the entire project. Like I mentioned in the font section of this powerpoint, green has connotations with nature and veganism. Colour Scheme
  • 12. Colour Scheme Whilst filming I will be wearing a brown shirt like the one pictured to the right. Brown is a neutral colour that doesn’t inflict much emotional response and will solidify my neutrality as a reporter. Brown is also not that distracting, therefore allowing the viewer to focus on the discussion and content.

  • 15. Contingency Planning Potential Issue Solution Not allowed to film inside the venue Conduct interviews outside the venue as people enter/leave Event is cancelled Attend when new dates are announced Lose/forget equipment Use phones for sound and recording Not allowed to access balcony Find somewhere accessible where a higher shot can be attained Participants refuse to sign consent form Interview other people Public transport is unavailable/out of budget use other forms of transport (i.e. taxi, uber, friends and family) and have each crew member pay a percentage of the total price
  • 16. Health and Safety Potential Issue How will the issue be avoided? Overcrowded areas could result in crew members and the public being injured Avoid overcrowded areas. Assess an areas to see whether it is safe to film Steep steps leading up to town hall could result in someone falling Spread equipment responsibility evenly throughout the group so no one has an extra burden and can focus on their footing better Equipment could cause injuries to those around (i.e. from falling over, being an obstruction) Set up equipment in areas with few people or create a space for set up and filming A fire could start within the town hall and could result in injury or death become familiar with fire escapes and determine an escape route that the whole crew are aware of Some of the crew members may have health issues that could flare up (i.e. asthma, allergies) Ensure they have the correct medication and information on how to deal with it and inform the rest of the crew on how to assist
