Flooding is the most common natural hazard in the Caribbean. There are different types of flooding categorized by duration and location, including flash floods, river floods, coastal floods, and arroyo floods. Flash floods often occur from heavy rainfall in mountainous areas. River floods result from large amounts of rainfall in river systems. Coastal floods are caused by hurricanes and tropical storms driving ocean water inland. Arroyo floods form when storms cause fast-moving rivers along dry gullies. Poor drainage systems can also cause flooding, such as improperly positioned downspouts that release roof water directly at foundations.
