3. Introduction
Floating solar power plant (FSPP) is an immerging technology in which
floating solar arrays are float on surface of drinking water reservoirs, lakes,
irrigation canals and ponds.
Rather than placing a solar panel on land, this method uses pontoons to float
a series of panels on water. The water beneath the panels keeps them cool,
resulting in greater energy production.
A small number of such system exist in France, India, Japan, South Korea,
Singapore, and the U.S.
4. Construction
Components of FSPP are as below
I. Pontoon:- A pontoon’s are floating device with buoyancy which float on
water with heavy load.
II. Mooring System:- A mooring system is a permanent structure which
supports floating panels and keep them at same position. It also prevent
panels from turning or floating away.
III. Solar PV model:- it is system of solar panel used to convert thermal
energy into heat energy.
IV. Cables and Connectors
V. Floating Structure:- it is the system consist of a raft supporting solar
panels.
5. Working
Floating solar panels results from the combination of PV plant technology
and floating technology . This system consist of floating system that allows
the installation of PV module , Mooring system ; can adjust to water level
fluctuations while maintaining its position in southward direction , PV system ;
similar to electrical junction boxes that are installed on top of the floating
system . As a new generation technology , it can replace the existing PV
plants that are installed on top of farmland and buildings . As these system
installed on water surfaces , so the panels are naturally cooled . This increases
lifetime and efficiency of panels

8. Indian Scenario
The FSPP as a technology is still in the stages if development in India the
journey started with a 10KW FSPP plant on a pond in Rajarhat, Kolkata in
2015. The project was part of a research activity sponsored by the Ministry of
New & Renewable Energy (MNRE). In 2016 India came with 100KW plant on a
reservoir in Kerala’s Kayamkulam district. The recently commissioned 2MW
project at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh has now the largest FSPP based
plant in the country till date. At the movement there are many project, which
are in various stages of development for this new segment.
9. List of FSPP
1. Saemangeum floating solar energy project(South Korea) – 2.1GW
2. Omkareshwar Dam floating solar farm(MP, India) – 600MW
3. Hangzhou Fengling Electricity Science Technology’s solar farm(China) – 320MW
4. Three Gorges New Energy’s floating solar farm(China) – 150MW
5. Cirata Reservoir floating photovoltaic (PV) power project(Indonesia) – 145MW
6. NTPC Kayamkulam solar project(India) – 105MW
7. NTPC Ramagundam solar power plant(Telangana, India) – 100MW
10. Features of FSPP
Does not occupy land space.
Easy to mount and install
Saves water by avoiding evaporation.
Easy to clean using lake/pool water.
Efficiency improvement.
11. Drawback
Large cost of installation.
Cannot be used in sea due to rough waters.
Constant movement may cause stress and fatigue to joints and
connectors.
13. Conclusion
One of the largest challenges before India today is the power crisis many
people have no access to electricity. Solar energy plays very important role in
power generation. Because of less availability of land, we are moving toward
floating solar power plant. Installations of FSPP open up new opportunity for
scaling up solar generating capacity, especially in countries with high
populations and less land. They have certain advantages over land based
solar power plant. With this advancement , countries under development can
meat its power demand in future .
