6. What is It ?
The Canal Solar Power Project is a project launched
in Gujarat, India, to use the 19,000 km long network
of Narmada canals across the state for setting up solar
panels to generate electricity.
It was the first ever such project in India.
This project has been commissioned by SunEdison India
Following its successful operation, second project with higher
capacity and on higher width of canal i.e., 10 MW canal top
Solar Power Project has been implemented on Vadodara
Branch Canal.
Another 35 MW Canal Top Solar Power projects are on going.

8. IDEAS:-
The canal-top idea was first tabled at a 2011 Vibrant Gujarat
Summit by the then Chief Minister of Gujarat.
The aim was to utilise the area above the canals, saving the
government the cost, time and inconvenience associated with
land acquisition.
Gujarat alone has a canal network of 80,000 km. Using even
30% of this network for canal-top solar projects, according to
GSECL estimates, 18,000 MW of power could be produced in
just Gujarat .

11. Benefits from 1MW Canal Top the project:
•1.6 million units of power to be generated annually.
• 9 million litres Water to be conserved annually.
• 6 acres of land Conserved.
• Less Algae Growth in the canal water
Innovative Idea: Cover the canal with
solar panels to
Minimize evaporation from canals
Water
Produce eco- friendly power using
solar panels as the cover
Save Land

12. IMPLEMENTATION HIGHLIGTS:-
A prototype structure was designed and installed at a site.
Conceptualisation, design, and manufacturing of the special
structure with required strength and corrosion protection
capabilities, keeping safety of canal on priority
The canal water is instrumental in lowering the temperature of
the solar panels; this further improves the efficiency of the
solar plant and yields a higher electricity output.
Minimisation of the transmission loss leading to strengthening
of the grid.
The project being fully replicable, further projects with higher
generation capacity are being planned in the State, on the
existing Narmada Main as well as Branch canal.

14. SAVING RESOURCES:
With the increasing population also comes the need to address
the problem of water security.
The water in the canals gives rise to algae growth due to
abundant sunlight and moisture.
Algae block and clog the irrigation and water pumps and spoil
the quality of water.
Thus, due to the fitment of solar PV panels and absence of
sunlight, algae growth is drastically minimized.
This helps in lowering the cost of maintenance and extends the
life of irrigation equipment.
Furthermore, the solar panels can provide electricity to the
irrigation pumps.

16. BENIFITS
16.2 million units of power to be generated.
90 million liters Water to be conserved annually.
25 Acres of Land Conserved.
Less Algae Growth in the canal water.

17. Selection Of Photovoltaic Module
Mainly there are two types of solar PV modules are used for
the construction i.e. Thin film and crystalline modules.
Generally the efficiency of the crystalline module is more as
compared to Thin film and the watt of the cell is higher for
crystalline with the same space.
Hence Poly Crystalline modules are used in the 10MW Canal
top solar power project, Vadodara.

22. WHAT IT IS ?
An emergent method of solar photovoltaic electricity generation
know as “ FLOATING SOLAR”.
It also dramatically improves the efficiency of photovoltaic
generation while also insulating water bodies.
Thereby decreasing water loss due to evaporation.
Floating solar photovoltaic has emerged as a drought adaption
technology that allows water conservation through several
parallel means.
1/26/2018 22
23. WHY FLOATING PV:-
Ever increasing power demand and depletion of fossil fuels.
Leads to shift our focus to renewable energy sources.
Wind and Hydro RE sources are area specific.
PV can be installed at any favorable place.
Major issue of Solar PV is requirement of land.
But floating solar can be installed on any water bodies.
Floating solar PV result in decrease in cost and will increase
amount of generation due to cooling effect of water.

25. RECOMMENDED CONDITIONS FOR THE
INSTALLATION LOCATION:
The installation area should have a maximum water depth
within 6 meters.
The location should not experience water loss due to draining,
water shortages or otherwise.
The location should not be susceptible to high waves or strong
currents.
The location should not be at risk of heavy snowfall or water
freezing.
The location should have good road or water-based access
and be close to connectable utility poles. 1/26/2018 25
27. FLOATING SOLAR METHODOLOGIES:
THE Ciel And Terre Hydrelio SYSTEM:
The ciel is an French Company, has patented their Hydrelio
system for floating solar installation.
This system uses a modular, interconnecting system of HDPE
floats.
The floats are shaped to hold a panel mounting system at an
angle of inclination.
Anchors are used to keep the solar array stationary.
1/26/2018 27
28. FLOATOVOLTAIC:-
It is a pontoons connected to a mounting structure including
walkways between rows of panels and along the sides.

29. INDIA FIRST FLOATING POWER PLANT:-
NTPC started power generation from India’s largest floating
solar power plant at Kayamkulam in Kerala.
It is 100 kWp floating solar generation plant.
It was indigenously developed as a part of ‘Make In India’
initiative, at Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Plant
(RGCCPP) in Kerala’s Kayamkulam district.
These floating platform were indigenously developed by NTPC
Energy Technology Research Alliance, in collaboration with
Central Institute of Plastic Engineering & Technology
(CIPET), Chennai .
The system was installed by Swelect Energy Systems Ltd.
1/26/2018 29
30. ADVANTAGES:-
Minimize the Rate of evaporation.
Independent of land.
Using canal For Useful purpose.
Less algae formation.
1/26/2018 30
31. Disadvantages:-
The higher construction cost of these plants – because of the
use of more structural steel .
The 1 MW canal-top plant cost $2.8 million, according to
SSNNL, whereas a 1 MW land-based solar plant costs $2.3
million.
Another problem is that PV panels are usually mounted facing
southwards for optimal performance, but a canal might curve
and change direction. Using only north-south stretches of
water could limit the scale of canal-top plants.
Security Issue (Because Gujarat is also in India.)
