Flipping the Classroom for
EndNote Instruction

Problem with EndNote instruction
• First began offering in-person instruction
session in September 2007
• Most efficient to offer once per semester
• Problem: not everyone is available to attend
in-person workshops!
Solution?
• By Fall Semester 2014, it was clear that
there was a need for an asynchronous
version of my session
• Proposal: create streaming demos of my
EndNote instruction session!
Creating the tutorials
• Considered several technologies for creating the tutorials
• Adobe Connect - NO
• Adobe Captivate - NO
• Anything else out there?
• Our course media specialists clued me into Screencastify
• Chrome add-on
• Pros: Free, easy to use
• Cons: Only get one take, no editing/post-production features in
free version
Streaming tutorials made public
• Captioned tutorials first posted to YouTube –
October 2014
• Tutorials embedded into a LibGuides page –
August 2015
• LibGuides page given a custom URL for easier
sharing
Current status?
• Streaming tutorials have been a hit!
• LibGuides page has been viewed an average of 34 times a
month
• Demonstrated functions still work, but EndNote interface
looks quite different now
• Goal is to have updated tutorials by the start of next Fall
Semester using Camtasia
• Much more flexibility than Screencastify
• Solves my single-take and captioning issues
Why is this “flipping the classroom?”
• Present content of my session to anyone who cannot attend
in-person session
• Streaming tutorials can ALSO supplement the in-person
session
• Posting to LibGuides makes them available anytime,
anywhere
• Not limiting instructional touch to once a semester
• Providing instruction to cohorts who would not get to see
me otherwise (online learners, global campuses)

  1. Reasons Connect didn’t work: Technical issues Stilted, static presentation Major accessibility barrier – cannot caption audio in Connect!
  2. Knew that I had to break up the sessions into lessons
  3. Captioning – another challenge! Material must be course-related to use RIT’s captioning service A librarian colleague submitted them for captioning as part of her course
