Virtual Pair Programming

The X Window System uses a client-server model where a display server (X server) controls local display hardware and runs the graphical user interface. X clients are graphical applications that connect to the X server to display windows and widgets. When a user logs into the system, a display manager starts the X server and launches an X session, running clients like a window manager and desktop environment. Common components include the X server, X clients, window manager, desktop environment, and display manager.
Attach Me, Detach Me, Assemble Me like you Work
Detachable user interfaces consist of graphical user interfaces whose parts or whole can be detached at run-time from their host, migrated onto an- other computing platform while carrying out the task, possibly adapted to the new platform and attached to the target platform in a peer-to-peer fashion. De- taching is the property of splitting a part of a UI for transferring it onto another platform. AttAaching is the reciprocal property: a part of an existing interface can be attached to the currently being used interface so as to recompose another one on-demand, according to user's needs, task requirements. Assembling inter- face parts by detaching and attaching allows dynamically composing, decom- posing and re-composing new interfaces on demand. To support this interaction paradigm, a development infrastructure has been developed based on a series of primitives such as display, undisplay, copy, expose, return, transfer, delegate, and switch. We exemplify it with QTkDraw, a painting application with attach- ing and detaching based on the development infrastructure.
ArcReady - Architecting For The Client Tier
The client (or presentation) tier of our applications is taking on an increasingly important role. Users are expecting more compelling user interfaces, but they also want more functionality from their applications. In this ArcReady we examine how to design and deliver well architected client applications that will be easy to maintain and extend.
Session 1: Trends and patterns on the client tier
In our first session we will take a vendor and platform neutral look at some of the trends and emerging technologies that can be used on the client tier. We will look at techniques like Mashups, technologies like Natural User Interfaces (NUI) and the increasing importance of the mobile platform. We will also look at some common patterns that can be used in the architecture of the client tier.
Session 2: Applying Microsoft technology on the client tier
In our second session we will take some look at how we can use Microsoft technologies to create well architected and compelling client applications. We will look at technologies like Silverlight and WPF that can be used to create compelling clients. We will also look at technologies that can be used to make your applications more extensible for future development. We will also examine some architectural guidance developed by the Microsoft Patterns and Practices group.

Running Accurate, Scalable, and Reproducible Simulations of Distributed Syste...Rafael Ferreira da Silva
Scientific workflows are used routinely in numerous scientific domains, and Workflow Management Systems (WMSs) have been developed to orchestrate and optimize workflow executions on distributed platforms. WMSs are complex software systems that interact with complex software infrastructures. Most WMS research and development activities rely on empirical experiments conducted with full-fledged software stacks on actual hardware platforms. Such experiments, however, are limited to hardware and software infrastructures at hand and can be labor- and/or time-intensive. As a result, relying solely on real- world experiments impedes WMS research and development. An alternative is to conduct experiments in simulation.
In this work we present WRENCH, a WMS simulation framework, whose objectives are (i) accurate and scalable simula- tions; and (ii) easy simulation software development. WRENCH achieves its first objective by building on the SimGrid framework. While SimGrid is recognized for the accuracy and scalability of its simulation models, it only provides low-level simulation abstractions and thus large software development efforts are required when implementing simulators of complex systems. WRENCH thus achieves its second objective by providing high- level and directly re-usable simulation abstractions on top of SimGrid. After describing and giving rationales for WRENCH’s software architecture and APIs, we present a case study in which we apply WRENCH to simulate the Pegasus production WMS. We report on ease of implementation, simulation accuracy, and simulation scalability so as to determine to which extent WRENCH achieves its two above objectives. REMOTE TRIGGERED SOFTWARE DEFINED RADIO
This document describes a remote triggered software defined radio system. It discusses introducing students to software defined radios through a remote lab that provides access over the internet at any time without requiring specialized hardware. The system architecture involves configuring lab computers with VNC server, using a cloud server with Guacamole to enable browser-based access, and rendering the virtual desktop on an HTML5 canvas. Algorithms are presented for system configuration, and results show the user interface for registration, accessing remote systems, and uploading data flow graphs for configuration. The future scope sees increased demand for software defined radios driving need for remote labs.

Virtualization allows multiple virtual machines to run on a single physical machine. It relies on hardware advances like multi-core CPUs and networking improvements. Virtualization works by either emulating hardware, trapping privileged instructions and emulating them, dynamic binary translation, or paravirtualization where the guest OS is aware it is virtualized. I/O virtualization can emulate devices, use paravirtualized drivers, or directly assign devices to VMs. This enables server consolidation and efficient utilization of resources in cloud computing.

Mark Hinkle presented on delivering Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) using open source software. He discussed various open source tools for building cloud computing including hypervisors like KVM and Xen, object storage solutions like OpenStack Swift, and automation/orchestration tools like CloudStack and OpenStack. Hinkle emphasized that open source solutions provide many advantages for cloud computing including lower costs, collaboration, and avoidance of vendor lock-in. Virtualization allows multiple virtual machines to run on a single physical machine. It relies on hardware advances like multi-core CPUs and networking improvements. Virtualization works by either emulating hardware, trapping privileged instructions and emulating them, dynamic binary translation, or paravirtualization where the guest OS is aware it is virtualized. I/O virtualization can emulate devices, use paravirtualized drivers, or directly assign devices to VMs. This enables server consolidation and efficient utilization of resources in cloud computing.

This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion.
