But we were prepared, using our 2017 Fjord Trends as a guide, to uncover the most inspiring work and topics that will continue to evolve this coming year.
The 50-plus population in the United States consists of close to 100 million consumers. Between now and 2030, this demographic will expand by over 34%. Additionally, by 2030 roughly 1 in 5 Americans will be 65 years of age and older, for a total of 72 million seniors.
In general, we are living longer and with more health complications. Even so, most of us want nothing more than to remain in the company of our friends and loved ones, stay in places that are most familiar and comfortable to us, and maintain our mental and physical autonomy.

The Concept Development Workshop was the third of a three-part workshop series to build capability in the sector to generate and implement innovative ideas to get Victorians active, and to help applicants for the VicHealth Innovation Challenge to develop their ideas to get the inactive active and reach the hard to reach. Globalization creates many opportunities but also challenges for businesses today.
While some challenges may be particular to a country or sector, there are many challenges that SMEs around the world have in common.
Numerous barriers exist, so in order for SMEs to not only survive and grow, they must be armed with the correct tools and strategies to overcome these challenges and thrive.
While there are some that the individual business cannot control (at least for now) that does not mean they should sit back and do nothing.
A business that decides to understand the challenges and develop a program for finding solutions is a business that puts itself in a position to achieve success.
Being design-ready - the organisation as the studentKarina Smith
As human-centred design becomes increasingly adopted by organisations as a key approach problem-solving, these organisations are growing their in-house design teams to meet the internal demand and training all staff in the mindsets of HCD to ensure they are 'design ready'.
While we believe providing design training for in-house staff will not replace the need for experienced designers, if we want organisations to become environments in which design approaches can flourish, education of staff at all levels about design has a place. This poses questions of who the student is, what it is they need to learn, the best approach, and to what outcomes? And if designers are to become educators for their organisation, what skills do they need?

Engaging with People Through Multiple Touchpoints, Channels, and Technologies.
New technologies, device types, and evolving patient expectations place a large burden on service offerings from health organizations. New technologies can be disruptive, but they can also be disrupting, especially if organizations don’t have a strategy on how to deal with the evolving landscape. Virtual reality pain management? Passive low-band telemetry data? Health monitoring? We will discuss approaches that health organizations can take to manage the ever evolving technology landscape and shifting patient dynamic from hospital care to home care.

Beyond use of digital tools and services, health organizations are increasingly considering how they can help people make positive change in their lives. Additionally, there are potential business benefits to changing behaviors to align with the organization's objectives. Issues of trust and ethics also come into play. Our annual Trends report is always a team effort, and this year’s team was bigger and more diverse than ever. More than 1,000 Fjordians, plus (for the first time) 85 clients from five continents, inspired our report, each bringing their own individual perspectives and experiences to the table.
We first gathered insights in all forms—a mix of hastily-drawn thoughts on Post-it Notes, elegant (and not-so-elegant) illustrations, simple scribbles and some long-form copy, and even some musings over a cup of coffee. We then took those insights into workshops designed to hone the thinking and spot patterns—and tapped into some digital tools to help us gather evidence for our best ideas (because at Fjord, we’re all about blending the physical with the digital). The result? Seven Trends affecting business, technology and design in 2018.
Today, we see deep division across global populations on a broad range of issues, which is creating social and political anxiety. We’re also experiencing tension as a result of deep technological change that is altering the world we live in. There is no running from these forces. For the first time, we feel that there is just one meta theme for Trends in 2018: Tension.
