This is the introduction to a panel in the first eStandards conference aiming to bring together with Hospital CIOs, actors in the healthcare system: representative of payers, health professionals to get a sense of the issues with interoperability in largescale eHealth deployment. 4. Interoperability HL7 v2 and DICOM
as a major operating tool …
Within our architecture :
– To generate modalities worklist of cardiology,
imagiology and other medical specialities equipments
that support already HL7 and DICOM classes
– To interoperate between emergency and imagiology and
Labs
– To ask for imagiology service to third parties and receive
reports and images
• Portuguese IT Vendors/Integrators
– Very matures regarding these standards and related
technologies

5. Priority areas of data sharing …
Within our architecture :
– Centralize Scheduling of clinical acts (exams;
outpatient; day hospital )
– Register nurse procedures at the patient bed, like drug
administration and draw blood
Within the Nation Health System - Directed by SPMS
– Patient summary sharing
– Dicom Images and reports sharing

6. Challenges/Problems…
Local public hospitals due to a very old HIS/EPR system,
face strong difficulties to interoperate with it (runs on
Oracle 7.3.4)
We don´t follow much IHE profiles, and miss some
important like PIX … so sometimes we send a call to a
patient that we shouldn't …
Each of our vendors to support HL7 messages build or
licence his own HL7 engine, so we have a lot of them
right now running in house …
