The scene that I have chosen to apply my learning in this term to, as well as
specifically analyze, is the 2012 Universal and Working Title Films production of
the movie musical Les MisГ©rables, directed by Tom Hooper. This musical
focuses on the lives of several characters in France during the early 1800 s; Jean
Valjean is an ex convict who breaks parole to start a new life, Javert is the chief of

Social Isolation and Social Capital The surprising finding of Rankin and Quane does
to an extent show the limits of Putnam s previous research on social isolation because
it does not take into consideration economics and race. Social isolation refers to the
lack of contact or of sustained interaction with individuals and institutions that
represent mainstream society (Wilson qtd Rankin Quane 4). Although, Rankin and
Quane s findings show high levels of engagement among people in poorer
neighborhoods, the findings are not significant enough to change the notion that
social capital is eroding. Putnam refers to social capital as a feature of social
organization such as networks, norms, and social trust that facilitates coordination for
mutual benefit (9). This means that the lack of involvement in the community
decreases social capital and increases social isolation amongst Americans. In this

Each of my shifts for preceptorship were night shifts. This was an adjustment for me
as I had never worked consecutive overnight shifts prior to this semester of nursing
school. I adapted fairly well to this change after the second night of the experience.
However, I found that my body adjusted too well to night shift and on the nights
that I didn t have a shift I wasn t able to fall asleep until early morning hours. I also
had a hard time resisting the urge to nap during the days that I had off. As a result,
I felt that I spent less time on school work and had much less time for family and
friends. I am glad that I had the opportunity to experience overnight shifts because I
plan to work at Rapid City Regional Hospital and they require nursing staff to work
rotating

Story Of An Hour Analysis
The Story of an Hour by Kate Choplin is only one thousand words long; yet there is
strong character development throughout. It also has seemingly strong undertones of
social issues, such as independence as a woman in the 1800s. Many of those in the
literary field argue whether Choplin s intention was to have underlaying tones of
positivity and feminism, or if it is a story about irony told through a woman named
Louise Mallard, a woman with heart troubles who dies of happiness when she finds
out that her husband is in fact still alive. Lawrence I. Berkove argues the latter with
refuting arguments and a close analysis of the text with evidence. Berkove starts his
argumentoff by refuting other arguments on the topic of this short story. He
references the standard for the interpretation of the story by Toth and Seyersted;
that the story of Louise Mallard is an extreme example of the theme of self
assertion [and] feminist bent whereas he believes Louise is an immature egotist and
a victim of her own extreme self assertion. He elaborates on his refutation by stating
these positions are all read into the story from non textual assumptions. Since the
narrator is not first person it is third person omniscient we cannot assume that the
narrator is a reliable narrator. He backs up this argument by showing that the narrator
is contradicted by other textual evidence, as well as citing paragraphs 12, 13, and 14.
Within these paragraphs, the narrator tries to take the audience into Louise s mind,
however...there is no textual evidence of also ascribing them to the narrator. Lousie
thinks that she wants to live for herself instead of for her husband and that can be
interpreted as wanting to be an independent woman. However, Berkove explains that
this is not the case and her justifications are extravagant, unrealistic statements and
that she does not love her husband for the original reasons she married him anymore.
Berkove also furthers his argument that Louise essentially killed herself, by
analyzing the text itself and its possible connotations. Since the story begins with the
line Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, although vague, it gives the
reader inference to base her actions on
