A 19-year-old female student presented with gradually decreasing vision in her right eye over the past year. Examination found retinal capillary hemangiomas and exudative retinal detachment in the right eye, and smaller hemangiomas in the left eye. Imaging found small meningiomas in her spinal cord. She was diagnosed with Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, an autosomal dominant condition characterized by benign tumors in multiple organ systems. Treatment included laser photocoagulation and vitrectomy surgery for the right eye. Her siblings were screened and she will need lifelong screening due to the risk of malignant tumors developing over time.
