Chloe Whittle proposes a short zombie film as her final media project. The film will tell the story of a couple living underground to escape zombies. When the husband goes searching for food above ground, he is attacked by a zombie but does not realize he has been infected. He returns home sick and eventually turns into a zombie himself. The film aims to appeal to a target audience of older teenagers and young adults with suspense, gore, and the tragic death of a main character. Chloe plans to use practical special effects makeup, realistic wounds, varied camera angles, diegetic and non-diegetic sound, and Adobe software to meet audience expectations for the zombie genre.

I have chosen to make a short film due to the fact I have gathered loads of
ideas in what’s going to happen in my short film. My short film will also
feature non diegetic and diegetic sound. The non-diegetic sound will be
suspenseful music to get the audiences emotions working. The diegetic
music will be the talking in my short film. With my film being a zombie film
I will have to focus a lot on prosthetics which will be the makeup of the
zombies. In order for my film to work and be effective is if the make ups
very detailed and very well put together. I will use make up wax which will
allow me to create wounds wich look realistic. In order to make the wounds
look as realistic as possible I will have to practice before hand.
My short film will be a zombie film like I’ve said before however my short
film will have a story. My short film will begin with a couple living in a
underground cellar which will be very run down. They have very little food
therefore the husband has to go out and look around for food while his
wife stays at home and protects the cellar from any zombies. We will see
the husband rummage around a house looking for food and killing any
zombie sin the process. However while he’s looking around for food he
doesn’t notice a zombie standing behind him which then attacks him. The
audience doesn’t see if he gets bit or scratched to begin with. He then
returns home to his wife with food but begins to feel very unwell. The
camera will pan around to the husbands back revelling that he has been
scratched. He’s then reluctant to tell his wife because he’s the only person
she’s got. However he becomes to feel very unwell and becomes very pale.
His wife then realises what’s happened. There will then be a very sad scene
with the wife trying to help him but failing to do so. He then dies and leaves
his wife alone. The last shot will show the wife stood in a corner crying
when her husband’s hand twitches and his eyes open revelling he has
turned.
The story I have chosen to do is a very easy story to follow so it doesn’t
require the audience to think too much. My film will fit under a majority of
genres from Apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction, Thriller, Drama,
Suspense, Adventure Film and Horror. My short film will feature each one
of the genres I have mentioned and will have a lot of suspenseful moments
which you expect in a zombie film.

My target audience will been older teenagers and young adults. My short
film will be aimed at male and female however the male gender is usually
attracted more to zombie films then female. However due to my story
being a love story this will hopefully attract a female audience also. People
who have watched other zombie films such as dawn of the dead, Shaun of
the dead, The walking dead will also be my main target audience which is
why I have used these films and TV shows as influences.
My short film will also be targeted at all ethnicities due to the fact I will use
more than one ethnicity in my short film to show that there’s no
discrimination.

Needs?
Blood will be a main aspect the audience will expect to see in my zombie
film. If there’s no blood in a zombie film then it’s not a good zombie film at
all.
They will also expect to see a protagonist who’s not scared of anything and
who’s willing to risk his life for his family. This is seen in a lot of zombie
films such as the walking dead and Shaun of the dead.
My audience will also expect to see an actual zombie, which sounds very
obvious however the zombies will have to have something done to them to
make it clear to the audience that they are zombies. Therefore the make-up
will have to be very detailed and clear so it looks effective and that the
zombies actually look like zombies. The walking dead is a good example due
to the fact the zombies make up is very detailed and very effective. The
make-up will also add to the scare of the zombie film and hopefully leave a
lasting image in the audiences mind.
The audience will also expect suspense which is another key feature in a
zombie film. The suspense in a zombie film adds to the scare and the
enjoyment of the film due to the fact the audience will be on the edge of
their seats. It also can play with the audiences emotions making them jump
or as I said before scared.

My short film will feature all the codes and conventions that the audience
expect out of a zombie film. As I’ve touched on before there will be many
suspenseful moments which will get the audiences hearts racing such as
when the husbands attacked by a zombie from behind which he doesn’t
know is there. Music will also add to this which I will access from online
which I will download and fit accordingly with my film. This would be nondiegetic sound. With this scene I wish to shock the audience which is how I
would meet the needs of the audience. The suspense will add to the
enjoyment of the film.
Also one of the main characters will die in my film which is very common in
zombie films or TV shows such as the walking dead where many of the main
characters die. The film will also feature a lot of blood and gore which is a
must in a zombie film. This can be done with fake blood and make up which
can be done with special wax which is used in a lot of zombie films. The
audience will defiantly expect to see this in a zombie film due to the fact
that’s one of the main reasons a lot of people watch zombie films.
What production
techniques will you
use to realise your
project?
My short film will feature a lot of different camera angles to make it more
interesting. The camera angles will range from high angle to low angle
shots. The camera shots will range from medium, long, close up, extreme
close up, over the shoulder shots and many others in order like I’ve said
before to make my short film more interesting.
It will also use sound which I’ve mentioned before diegetic and nondiegetic which will range throughout my movie.
The lighting will be made from natural lighting from the sun due to the fact
I would like to film in the day or early in the morning. I will film early
in the morning when the streets are empty to get a real feel towards the

movie.
To put my movie together I will use adobe premiere and also after effects.
Adobe after effects will allow me to play around with my movie adding
certain effects if necessary. In a lot of zombie films a lot of cgi is used which
I am not capable off. However to make my film as effective as possible I will
use after effects too see what I can do.
