2. To make the image sit in front of
the word ‘SOUND’, I moved the
image layer above the head mast
layer, but below the main cover line
layer to make it sit underneath the
text. The image covering the head
mast is a code and convention of
big magazines, demonstrating my
understanding of the construction of
magazines. I created my punk logo
the usual design, but altered the
word ‘SOUND’ to match the dark
theme of the issue. I made the text
black, but used FX to create a white
stroke around the border of the
writing. I also used this in the mail
cover line ‘RISE AGAINST’ to show
the importance of these two texts.
To create this cover line which is
different to the rest, I used the
custom shape tool to make a grime
base to insert the text in, with an ‘all
ages’ font I downloaded off the
internet to finish off the grime look.
An additional cover line with
featuring bands is displayed in a list
on the left third. This is common in
most music magazines and can be
frequently seen. I made each line of
the text both white and red which
follow the colour scheme of the
magazine. I done this by creating a
text box and highlighting each like
and selecting the appropriate
colour.
Based on my questionnaire results I decided on a price for my
magazine. The most common answer was a price between £3 - £5, so I
settled with a final price of £5. The price of a Rock Sound magazine
often varies between £3.50 and £5. To create a more authentic
magazine I included a website URL to a website which is often a code
and convention of most magazines.
To create the cover line on the right
third ‘Fallout Boy VS Linking Park, I
used 2 white rectangle shapes for
text background. I then simply
placed the text above the rectangle
in a white colour with a black stroke
similar to the mast head and main
cover line.
At the bottom I used two secondary
images which I quick selected to remove
the background and put a stroke around
which pair with the right third cover line.

3. The images on the contents page
are surrounded by borders. To do
this I placed the image in a new
photoshop document, ‘selected’ the
whole image. Once selected I went
back to ‘select’ > modify > borders,
and changed the borders to 40
pixels for the first two images and
10 for the bottom image. Once I
have the border, I filled the border
with white on all images. Then
copied and pasted the borders into
the contents page document and
scaled and rotated them to fit
around the images.
To achieve the shape which is filled
with text, I simply selected the
rectangle tool and made a rectangle.
I then wen to ‘edit’ > transform >
warp. I then moved the edges
accordingly to create this shape. I
then chose the text tool and typed
my text with layer itself out in the
shape of the shape.
To create the title of the page, I downloaded another font called ‘Basterds’
to give it more of a punk rock feeling. I highlighted the word ‘punk’ and
changed the colour to red, leaving the word ‘sound’ white. I also applied a
black stroke.

column. I placed a black rectangle
down the side which I altered the
opacity in the layers tab.
The text contains information about
whats in the magazine and is titled
‘Main Features’ I used a large, red
number to show the page number
followed by the information which I
coloured red to stand out over the
text. The articles which sit over two
pages I slightly changed. I put a
white stroke over the page number
and enlarged them.
CONTENTS PAGE
The background of the page is a photo of the Empire State building taken in
New York. Like the double page spread, the image is used to show location.
The band Rise Against is from the United States and contextually is seen to
be patriotic which is often shown through their lyrics and songs. To make
the image look the way it is I turned it B&W through ‘image’ > adjustments
> Black & White.

4. The left side of the double
page spread is filled with an
American flag which covers
the whole page which again
links to location and context. I
placed the image and used
‘edit’ > transform > rotate 90
degrees. Once I rotated the
image to portrait, I scaled it to
fit the page. The flag looks old
and vintage which matches
the style of this double page
spread which is vintage.
To create a vintage look I
downloaded an old polaroid
template and inserted my
own photograph using scale
and rotation.
I cam up with an ideate make it look like my model is sitting in a circle. I used the
shape tool to create an oval shape which I drew out. I then played the image
which was big. I positioned it in front of the circle. I then used the rubber tool to
rub out the image until I reached circle and rounded it off. I then began to edit the
image it self which I went into ‘image’ > adjustments > black and white. Then I
moved onto editing the circle. I went to ‘filter’ > filter gallery > ‘texturizer’ to give it
the textured effect.
The title ‘Tim McIlrath’ I made
using a font I downloaded called
‘Carnivalee Freakshow’ I
intentionally made the words
different colours to match the
colours of the American Flag,
followed by ‘In the flesh’ which
sounds more punk also keeping
the punk rock vibe.
The article itself runs through three columns across
the second page. I done this by using three separate
text boxes across the page. I typed out the questions
in a non-italic, bold font with a gap between so the
reader clearly understands what the question is. I
made my own drop cap using a new layer ‘R’ in the
Carnivalee Freakshow font to show where the
paragraph starts.

quote and put a box around it
using the shape tool
