Paula Perez documents her experience moving from Spain to England at age 12 and adjusting to life in a new country. She considers herself Spanish but has come to prefer living in England, where she values the better education system. While she complains about the cold weather, she has made friends and does not wish to move back. Her mother, however, strongly dislikes England and wants to return to Spain. Paula takes the interviewer on a trip back to Spain to visit her uncle and see her old home, reflecting on the differences between life in each country.

INT. A BEDROOM. DAY1.
There is a double bed placed in the middle of the room. With
black covers, red pillows and a black wallpaper behind it,
filled with rounded white and silver flowers. One silver
night table on each side with four draws each, and one red
night lamp on them. [establishing-shot]
We see the camera being set up in front of the double bed,
as PAULA sits comfortably on the bed ready to start the
documentary.
CUT TO:
INTERVIEWER
Okay, I think everything is set up.
Are you ready?
PAULA
I am, hit record whenever you are
ready.
[Long shot]of Interviewer talking from Paula's point of
view.
INTERVIEWER
So, how long have you been living
in England?
[Mid shot] of Paula talking.
PAULA
In May it will be six years.
[Low angle shot] of interviewer.
INTERVIEWER
Considering how long you have been
living here, do you consider
yourself to be English or Spanish?
[Point of view shot] from Paula's point of view.
PAULA
Oh Spanish, definitely Spanish.
INTERVIEWER (V.O.)
Oh, why's that?
PAULA
I guess because I was born there
and my parents are both Spanish. I
don't think the country you live in

PAULA (CONT'D)
really are.
[Establishing shot] of Paula.
INTERVIEWER (V.O.)
So if you had the option to move
back to Spain, would you?
PAULA
Oh no. Even though I constantly
complain about the weather I would
never consider moving back.
INTERVIEWER
So you'd rather stay here with the
clouds and rain than go back to
Spain with the heat and sun? I'm
gonna need a good explanation for
that.
(laughs)
[mid shot] of Paula.
PAULA
(laughs)
I think that's the only thing wrong
with this country though, the
weather. The food it's not too bad,
and the education is definitely
better which is a main thing to me.
So I much rather stay here, get a
good education and just go back for
holidays. Plus I've met a lot of
great people over here.
INTERVIEWER (V.O.)
Like me. So, was it hard to move to
a different country at 12?
PAULA
Oh obviously.
(laughs)
I actually don't remember much...
But I remember how much I hated not
being able to socialise with anyone
because I hardly knew the language.
INTERVIEWER (V.O.)
How long did it take you to learn
it completely?

[close up shot] of Paula.
PAULA
I'd say about 5 or 6 months.
[establishing shot] of both of them getting up.
INTERVIEWER
I think it's time to go out and get
some footage of your little
village.
PAULA
We'll be done in 10 minutes then.
(laughs)
CUT TO:
EXT. ELSENHAM. DAY2.
The first thing you see is the main road. And the first
thing you feel is the cold wind. A quiet village with many
white and wooden houses on both sides of the road. The
INTERVIEWER and Paula walk towards One Stop, which is a
small shop in the village.
We see Paula and the Interviewer walking on the left side of
the road with the camera while they are talking.
[tracking-shot]
INTERVIEWER (V.O.)
Well I'm guessing the design of the
houses are obviously different.
What about Elsenham overall?
[handheld] of the village.
PAULA
Well as you can clearly see,
Elsenham is a tiny village. I don't
think we even have villages in
Spain.
INTERVIEWER
What about train stations? Do you
have them where you lived?
[mid shot] of Paula talking.
PAULA
Oh no, not where I lived. I was
shocked when I found out tiny
villages like Elsenham had a train

PAULA (CONT'D)
CUT TO:
INT. PAULA'S HOUSE. AFTERNOON.3.
Interviewer and Paula walk inside along the long corridor
which goes past the kitchen, the small toilet, the spare
room and the dinning room to end up in the living room where
Paula's mum is sat on the brown, big sofa.[handheld-shot]
Interviewer and Paula walk towards Paula's mum and she sits
next to her while the Interviewer sits on the table which is
opposite the sofa.
INTERVIEWER
Hello Paula's mum. So tell me. If
you could move back to Spain, would
you?
PAULA'S MUM
I definitely would, I hate it over
here. The weather, the people,
everything.
INTERVIEWER
Hey, what's wrong with the people?
PAULA'S MUM
(laughs)
They're just so horrible. Mainly
the women, they just stare at you
and judge you and give you evils.
INTERVIEWER
No offence taking then. What about
the food then? Don't you normally
have dinner in Spain at about 2 o'
clock?
PAULA
Well, she still cooks Spanish food
so that's not much different.
PAULA'S MUM
Yeah we would normally have dinner
at about 2. But here it's
completely different, people either
eat at 5pm or 8pm.
INTERVIEWER
Do you know how to cook English
meals?

PAULA'S MUM
Oh yeah, not many but I know how to
make Sheppard's pies, roast dinners
and so on.
INTERVIEWER
Oh nice, overall, are you glad you
moved to England?
PAULA'S MUM
I guess I am.
The Interviewer looks back at Paula with the camera waiting
for her to reply.
PAULA
I would say I am, schools are way
better over here.
CUT TO:
EXT. ELSENHAM. PAULA'S HOUSE. NIGHT4.
Paula and the Interviewer go back upstairs. Paula has white
spiral stairs placed in one of the corners of the living
room. [handheld]
They go back upstairs to Paula's room to carry on with
their interview while the discuss the footage. They start
packing up their suitcases.
INTERVIEWER
Would you mind explaining to the
camera why we're packing our
suitcases?
[mid shot] of Paula talking and packing her suitcase.
PAULA
Well, we are going on a little trip
to Spain, aren't we?
Interviewer turns it's own camera to him so you can see his
dark black hair and facial expression showing enthusiasm.
[extreme close up]
INTERVIEWER
Yes! Yes we are people!
Interviewer turns the camera back to Paula who is shoving
clothes in her suitcase which is placed on her bed. [mid
shot]

PAULA
Are you ready then?
INTERVIEWER
Oh I am. But are "you" ready?
PAULA
(laughs)
I need to find my shoes and I'm
done.
INTERVIEWER
Are you excited to go back and see
your uncle?
PAULA
I am, I literally cannot wait.
Can't wait to see him and hear
people talk Spanish at the airport
and outside. I haven't seen him
since summer which wasn't that long
ago but it feels like forever.
CUT TO:
INT.PLANE. NIGHT.5.
Paula and the Interviewer get on the Ryanair plane. It's
packed with people, they walk towards the middle of the
plane and Paula sits by the window and the Interviewer right
next to her.[handheld]
INTERVIEWER (V.O.)
Here we come Spain!
The camera is facing Paula's window as it's sped up to see
how the plane takes off from the dark grey track in the
night and up in the sky.
CUT TO:
INT. AIRPORT. NIGHT.6.
Paula and the Interviewer get off the Ryanair plane with
their suitcases. They go through the white tunnel which
leads to the airport. They go through the passport control
and finally they make their out to where everyone waits for
people to get off. [handheld]
PAULA (V.O.)
God, this is so stressful, I hate
it.

INTERVIEWER (V.O.)
I'd hate to work for a company
where they are constantly flying
from country to country.
They see Paula's uncle, who is waiting for them in his
Metallica shirt and dark blue denim jeans. Holding a Burger
King bag as he smiles. [establishing shot]
PAULA'S UNCLE
Hey, how was the flight?
[Handheld] of Paula's uncle
Asked Paula's uncle as he hugged her tightly. [close up] of
Paula's face.
PAULA
So, god damn long.
[mid shot] of Paula and he uncle and he lets go.
INTERVIEWER (V.O.)
Do I get one?
(laughs)
I don't see why she's complaining,
she slept for the whole flight.
[mid shot] of Paula's uncle to see his reaction.
PAULA'S UNCLE
(laughs)
You, mister. You get a burger.
He put his hand in the Burger King bag and handed the
Interviewer a Whoopper.
[handheld] of Paula.
PAULA
What? If I knew the options, I
would have gone for the burger!
PAULA'S UNCLE (V.O.)
(laughs)
You get one too.
He handed Paula her Whopper as he smiled.[mid shot] of
Paula's uncle.
PAULA'S UNCLE
Should we get going then? I don't
want to be stuck in traffic and

your little cousin is dying to see
PAULA'S UNCLE (CONT'D)
you.
Paula's uncle grab her suitcase and carries it all the way
to the car, while the Interviewer grabs his one and carries
his to the car.[mid shot] of Paula's uncle.
CUT TO:
EXT. SPAIN. MORNING.7.
They all step outside Paula's uncle's house. It's a white
three-floored house with a small pool to the right with many
squared windows an the front. [handheld]
PAULA'S UNCLE
So, what's the first stop?
INTERVIEWER
I'm curious about your old house,
Paula.
PAULA'S UNCLE
Let's get in the car then.
They all get into his black Seat Ibiza.
CUT TO:
EXT. SPAIN. PAULA'S OLD HOUSE. DAY.8.
They get out of the car as the sun shines on their faces
making them slightly close their eyes to adjust tot he
bright light. [handheld]
INTERVIEWER (V.O.)
Oh wow, it's got three floors? That
house is huge!
[handheld] of the house.
PAULA (V.O.)
Yeah it was pretty big. My mum
worked for the company who sell all
these houses so she didn't have to
pay the full price of the house.
The house is a big orange house with white stripes on the
edges. It has a balcony on the highest floor which was
Paula's mum's room. And on the other side, another white
balcony which was Paula's room. Then a playground around the
bottom floor where the garage was. The garage was a big
glass door with white edges.
