3. What is a figure of speech?
A figure of speech is a rhetorical device that achieves a special effect by using words
In distinctive ways.

4. LITERAL VS FIGURATIVE
LITERAL
 The actual dictionary meaning of a
word; language means what it appers
to mean.
 Eg. South Africa is a developing
country.
 What it means: exactly what it says!-
that SA is a developing country.
FIGURATIVE
 Language that means more than what
it says on the surface.
 Eg. “Fragrance always stays in the
hand that gives the rose”.
 What it means: Giving to others is
gracious and the good feeling of
giving stays with you.

6. SIMILE
A figure of speech that uses the words ‘as’ or ‘like’to compare
between two things.
EXAMPLES:
o The man was as faithful as a dog to his employer.
o Good friendship is like coffee; warm, rich and strong.

7. METAPHOR
A figure of speech that also compares two things but
Without the use of the words ‘as’ or ‘like’.
EXAMPLES:
o You are the light of my life.
o Her eyes were diamonds.

8. PERSONIFICATION
Human attributes are given to an animal, or object, an idea or a concept.
EXAMPLE:
o Lightning danced across the sky.
o The sun greeted me this morning.

9. HYPERBOLE
Using exaggeration for the purpose of emphasis.
EXAMPLES:
o If I cannot get a smartphone, I will die.
o I have a million tasks to complete today.

10. EUPHEMISM
The substitution of an agreeable or inoffensible expression for one that may
Offend or suggest something unpleasant.
EXAMPLES:
o Died- Passed away.
o You are fired- you are being let go.

11. OXYMORON
A figure of speech in which incongruous or contradictory terms appear
Side by side.
EXAMPLES:
o Sanny’s seven sisters slept soundly in the sand.
o It was an open secret.
