Packaging is:
The activity of temporarily integrating an
external function and a product to enable the
use (consumption) of the product (food).
Waste is*:
● Damaged, defective, or superfluous material produced by a
manufacturing process: such as (1) : material rejected during
a textile manufacturing process and used usually for wiping
away dirt and oil (2) : scrap (3) : an unwanted by-product of
a manufacturing process, chemical laboratory, or nuclear
reactor
● Refuse from places of human or animal habitation: as (1)
: garbage, rubbish (2) : excrement —often used in plural (3)
: sewage
● Material derived by mechanical and chemical weathering of
the land and moved down sloping surfaces or carried by
streams to the sea

Food for thought at PDI 16 March
Packaging activity aims to create added value (AV), in the
gross margin (GM) of the packaged product at the moment of
purchasing by the customer. One input factor is the
purchasing cost of the packaging material PCoP.
The AVP ratio (GM/PCoP) for packaged products (published by
NVC in 2003 for many different sectors) ranges from 2-20.
How does the PCoP relate to loss of GM due to damage/waste
of the packaged product?
How can we define the right parameters to stimulate
innovation towards fighting food waste?

  • 20. Food for thought at PDI 16 March Packaging activity aims to create added value (AV), in the gross margin (GM) of the packaged product at the moment of purchasing by the customer. One input factor is the purchasing cost of the packaging material PCoP. The AVP ratio (GM/PCoP) for packaged products (published by NVC in 2003 for many different sectors) ranges from 2-20. How does the PCoP relate to loss of GM due to damage/waste of the packaged product? How can we define the right parameters to stimulate innovation towards fighting food waste?
