Two billion people suffer from obesity (and may develop illnesses like diabetes from too much and unhealthy food) whereas 800 million other people live at the edge of starvation on our Planet. At the same time we waste 1/3 of the consumable food in the supply chain and at home. Packaging is playing different roles here: both 'good' and 'bad'. In this workshop around 80 packaging managers analysed the current situation and did their best to start working on ways how better packaging may fight food waste in the future. Food for thought!

In part, due to the specific policy for Global Development (PGD) which supports the creation of platforms for knowledge exchange and multi-sectoral collaboration. This side event will present a number of examples of this policy-led collaboration from the Swedish context relating to the reduction of food waste and production losses throughout the whole food chain, on a global scale.

For storage of food there is huge scope for modified atmosphere packaging, intelligent packaging, active packaging, and controlled atmosphere packaging. Active packaging has a variety of uses, including carbon dioxide absorbers and emitters, oxygen scavengers, antimicrobials, and moisture control agents. Smart packaging is another term for intelligent packaging. - 20. Food for thought at PDI 16 March Packaging activity aims to create added value (AV), in the gross margin (GM) of the packaged product at the moment of purchasing by the customer. One input factor is the purchasing cost of the packaging material PCoP. The AVP ratio (GM/PCoP) for packaged products (published by NVC in 2003 for many different sectors) ranges from 2-20. How does the PCoP relate to loss of GM due to damage/waste of the packaged product? How can we define the right parameters to stimulate innovation towards fighting food waste?
