The FIRST2RUN project aims at demonstrating the techno, economical and environmental sustainability at industrial scale of a first-of-kind value chain where low input and underutilized oil crops (i.e. cardoon) grown in arid and/or marginal lands and not in competition with food or feed, are exploited for the extraction of vegetable oils to be further converted into bio-monomers (mainly pelargonic and azelaic acids) as building blocks for high added value bioproducts, biolubricants, cosmetics, bioplastics, additives through the integration of chemical and biotechnological processes.

Bioeconomy: a strategic priority for EuropeBiocopacPlus
SPRING – Sustainable Processes and Resources for Innovation and National Growth is a non-profit Association, born in 2012 in response to the Call of MIUR for the Development and Strengthening of National Technological Clusters. It is proposed as representative and promoter of the national chemical industry from renewable sources, stimulating actions of research, demonstratives of transfer technological divulgation and training in constant dialogue with the stakeholders of the local area (agricultural, industrial, institutional and no profit spheres).
A recent history of industrial biotechnology, bioenergy and bioeconomy in the ukNNFCC
Over the last 10 years the UK has been developing its Industrial Biotechnology Strategy and investing in the infrastructure, such as open access pilot plants, to support innovation. In recent years UK strategy has started to move towards the development of it bioeconomy.
Land Use Change and European Biofuel PoliciesDavid Laborde
This presentation gives a detailed overview of the 2011 report done by IFPRI (Laborde, 2011) for the European Commission on the land use consequences of EU biofuel mandates (available at http://www.ifpri.org/sites/default/files/publications/biofuelsreportec2011.pdf )
The report aims to compute iLUC (indirect land use change) factor for different feedstocks using the MIRAGE-Biof CGE model.
Presentació d'Enric Llebot, Secretari de Medi Ambient i Sostenibilitat de la Generalitat de Catalunya en el marc de la jornada ‘The role of ecodesign in the circular economy’ que va tenir lloc a Brusel·les el 16 de juny de 2015
Redesigning Producer Responsibility: A new EPR is needed for a circular economySustainable Brands
A major cornerstone of waste management policies in the last two decades has been the establishment of extended producer responsibility EPR schemes where producers are responsible for the collection and management of their products once they become waste.
Although having been an important step forward in environment policies, EPR schemes have tended to focus mainly on the end of the pipeline,i.e. once a product has become waste, and efforts of industry and administration have been put in the development of collection strategies and in the development of technologies for sorting and recycling of waste.
In recent years, the emergence of new paradigms such as the circular economy or zero waste has highlighted the need for revising the current approach to EPR. Waste needs to not be seen as a problem to be solved, but instead as a resource with energy and materials embedded in products that need to be kept in the economic process for as long as possible and at the higher level of quality.
MATER-BIOTECH has been created by NOVAMONT for the build-up of the first dedicated industrial plant at world level that can produce butanediol (1,4 BDO) directly from sugars. The foodservice industry has been accused of wastefulness but the issues of food packaging and packaging waste are not straightforward and there is no easy answer or solution to the problem. The Footprint Forum discusses the issues and the ways that the supply chain can work together on best practice guidelines.

Preamble
7
There are increasing constraints and drivers (resource scarcity, bad technology, population
growth, etc.) imposed by our own resource system, which drives industry to increase its
overall efficiency by improving existing processes or finding new uses for:
o Residues
o By-products
o Wastes
Potential valorisation pathways
• Reduction of waste
• Recycling (Up- and downcycling)
• Reuse within the same cycle
Our waste hierarchy
The food recovery hierarchy (from Johnstona & Green 2004)

Waste definition
8
• OECD: Waste refers here to materials that are not prime products (i.e. products produced for the
market) for which the generator has no further use for their own purpose of production, transformation
or consumption, and which he discards, or intends or is required to discard. Wastes may be generated
during the extraction of raw materials, during the processing of raw materials to intermediate
and final products, during the consumption of final products, and during any other human
activity.
• EU Commission in the Waste Framework Directive 75/442/EEC on waste as amended by Council
Directive 91/156/EEC, Art.1(a): ‘Waste’ shall mean any substance or object in the categories set
out in Annex I which the holder discards or intends or is required to discard. The Commission
has drawn up a list of wastes belonging to the categories listed in Annex I.
Are excluded
- Residuals directly recycled or reused at the place of
generation (i.e. establishment);
– Waste materials that are directly discharged into ambient
water or air.
12. www.igv-gmbh.de
Food processing creates waste. Of approximately
3 billion tonnes of waste generated each year in Europe
it has been estimated that the member states produce
in the region of 222 million tonnes of food waste
and by-products across the key sectors (AWARENET)
Food processing residues/wastes
Key drivers for re-valorisation
12
Population growth
- The global food and drink industry is one of the
largest industry sectors and is essential to all
economies.
- the last 50 years has witnessed an immense
increase in the demand for food due to the rapid
growth in world population
Estimated previous&projected growth of the global human population
European food waste across the different sectors
13. www.igv-gmbh.de
• The majority of food processing systems were developed at least 20–30 (or more) years ago when waste
disposal – particularly in the vegetable, cereal and fruit processing industries – was not the issue it is today.
• The value added by processing a portion of a raw food material to create a high-priced product outweighed the
costs of disposal and, for many processes, there was little incentive to find alternative means to deal with the
waste streams.
• The development of technologies and approaches for exploiting waste streams was not such a priority; waste
production remained integral to the development of food processing systems.
But where comes this “waste” from?

• Due to the specificity of a given raw material and its processing in relation to a particular product, surplus and waste
food processing co-products are not readily utilized by the parent processors.
• Exploitation of the waste would necessitate a degree of diversification which would probably include the
formulation of new products for current or new markets.
Specific issues
Is there any globally accepted solution?
14
Processors‘ point of view
- A high degree of risk which is not
attractive since the industry is in a mature
state, and the products are mostly
commodities.
- They generally prefer their waste
streams to be removed from their
premises by third parties.
- Rapid deterioration of biological
materials due to autolytic, chemical and
microbial spoilage, resulting in a loss of
food-grade potential

Main features
Case Study: NOSHAN Project (www.noshan.eu)
21
NOSHAN investigates the process and technologies needed to use food derived
waste (fruit, vegetable/crops/dairy) for feed production at :
low cost
low energy consumption
maximal valorisation of starting wastes materials.
Nutritional value, functionality and safety will be monitored and investigated
Strategy:
A. Replacement of bulk feed ingredients: to cope with the huge amounts of
wastes derived from food
B. Valorisation of waste components into feed additives : to cope for animal
needs and improve feed price
