Satellites + telecoms = an over-expanding range of applications 15 years ago, satellite applications were more for experts Today, they are meeting end-users in cities and rural areas Guiding drivers and tractors Assisting practitioners in civil engineering Bringing TV and internet into homes (and this trend is likely to continue)
Application 1: telemedecine Monitoring and informing the patients, example of the diabetics Major levers : Growing digital divide and increasing lack of healthcare in rural areas The idea : a satellite system capable of delivering a full range of services Adapted for medical applications in Toulouse (France) to monitor diabetics, disseminate information and provide them with a dedicated TV Channel  Numerous applications of telemedecine
Application 2: agriculture Why ? satellites aiding integrated farming The idea : a tracter fitted with a GPS receiver drives automatically to where it needs to apply fertilizer Major benefits Farmers van keep closer track of seedling and obtain field level yield maps to,optimize fertilizer inputs (30% less nitrogen) Good for the environment : limiting imputs reduces risks of water pollution  Example :  http://www.infoterra-group.com
Application 3: Civil engineering Why ? The construction industry needs high-tech solutions, for example in assembling sections of a bridge deck. The idea : in Viaduc de Millau (France) two receivers were set up in the structure. Using GPS readings, the bridges engineers pushed out the deck by a few centimetres per minute. Application 4: Managing transport Two main applications General public Civil aviation B2C app : GPS can even be connected to the telephone and able to provide commercial relative content to guide the customer.
