How do female athletes perceive conflict in sport? Sport psychologist and professor, Dr. Nick Holt of the University of Alberta explains how to avoid conflict on teams from escalating, getting out of control and how to build a team that's strong when conflicts do occur.
From a joe gerstandt presentation at the 2014 Indiana SHRM conference focused on cognitive diversity or diversity of thought.

AS DIFFICULT as it is to build a cohesive team, it is not
complicated. In fact, keeping it simple is critical,
whether you run the executive staff at a multinational
company, a small department within a
larger organization, or even if you are merely a
member of a team that needs improvement. In that
spirit, this section is designed to provide a clear,
concise, and practical guide to using the Five Dysfunctions
Model to improve your team. Credits: Patrick Lencioni

As an executive recruiter with over twenty years’ experience, I’ve learned to spot the qualities of a good leader. Leadership traits are not one-size-fits-all; in fact, research shows that the best leaders tailor their leadership style to the situation. Some leadership characteristics, however, are consistent across the board. Leaders understand what needs to be done and motivate others to work towards a common goal. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best:
“A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.”
Intro to conflict styles presents five styles of dealing with conflict and the value of each in conflict resolution. Suitable for work with Style Matters: The Kraybill Conflict Inventory, the Thomas Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, and some other five style inventories.
Are you faced with conflicts in the workplace and unsure how to resolve them effectively? Have you tried to resolve a conflict with a manager, direct report or peer and felt like you got nowhere? Do you sometimes avoid conflicts because they seem impossible to resolve? In this webinar, we will discuss a step by step process for preparing to resolve a conflict, how to have a productive conflict resolution conversation, and learn more about the nature and purpose of conflict in the workplace.
An expanded Conflict Resolution Presentations which gives more practical advice on how to use the information.
I had members of the class give real life examples of Conflict Causes as listed on pages 13-18 . This helped bring out some very REAL issues (without centering anyone out) that we were able to provide resolutions for. Worked well. Good Luck.

Dr. Vicki Harber of the University of Alberta describes the kind of nutrition female athletes build strong, resilient bodies and stave off the Female Triad: disordered eating, bone loss and dysmenorrhoea.
University of Alberta post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Katherine Tamminen reviews some of stressors female athletes experience and how those can be dealt with coaches and sport psychologists.
Too many parents don't know how to support their child-athlete appropriately. University of Alberta PhD student, Camilla Knight talks about the types of parental support young athletes need to fully enjoy their experience as an athlete.
Female athletes are six times as liable as male athletes to be injured playing sport. One of the most common of those is the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament. Dr. Connie Lebrun, MD, sports medicine physician at the Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic at the University of Alberta discusses causes and treatment of the injury.
Impression Management
Erving Goffman (1922-1982)
Impression Management (IM)
Makes visible the interaction order, a
dimension of interpersonal behavior that
previous scholarship had overlooked.
Impression Management
Goffman vs Mead
Goffman followed Mead’s concerns with investigating
the “Me” (how others see us).
But Goffman focused on how the I tries to get others
to see a particular Me through impression
management (IM).
Impression Management
Our Main Effort
To fit into a situation in a way that:
1) confers moral value upon ourselves and
2) seems consistent with who we claim to
be.
Impression Management
Main Challenge
We portray ourselves as having a durable and
situationally-transcendent identity.
Situational Identity
… when in actuality we have situational
identities.
Key Points
A situationally-transcendent identity is a
myth.
We don’t have one, but we portray
ourselves as having one.
Situational Identity
The Power of the Situation
He says that people don’t have certain kinds of
moments because of who they are, but rather
certain kinds of moments create certain kinds of
people.
Situational Identity
The Fundamental Attribution Error
When, without information about the situation,
people explain someone’s behavior in terms of
that person’s personality or other attributes
Our Main Motivation
To convince others that:
1) we are presenting a real self identity;
2) that our self identity does not fluctuate
between situations;
3) and to avoid embarrassment
Impression Management
Discreditable Selves
We can easily lose the support of others to play
along with our performance.
Example: you send a message through private
chat, but it actually goes to everybody
Impression Management
The Implicit Contract
We are all in tacit agreement to help each other
maintain our self claims and not to point out
inconsistencies between presentations of self.
But we still do, sometimes.
Impression Management
For example, we use tact to minimize
or prevent embarrassment.
Not Upholding the Implicit Contract
Goffman says that we sometimes undermine
another’s presentation of self.
This is performance sabotage.
Impression Management
Impression Management
The strategic effort individuals employ to convey
that they possess a particular self identity.
Impression Management
Our Experience of Strategic Effort
“calculating” OR “relatively unaware”
Relatively unaware individuals may be “taken in by their
own act” (e.g. “sincere”)
Calculating individuals are not (but they are not always
self-interested)
Impression Management
Two Forms of Impressions
1. Impressions intentionally “given” (strategic
and calculating)
2. Impressions unintentionally “given off”
(unintended)
Impression Management
Dramatic realization: highlighting
important facts about ourselves that might
go unnoticed
Idealization: accenting positive aspects of
ourselves
Definition of the Situation (Do ...

Female athletes’ perceptions of conflict in sport may 16 2011
1. Female Athletes’ Perceptions of Conflict in Sport Nick Holt Associate Professor Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation **Camilla Knight & Peter Zukiwski**
3. Rationale and Purpose ‘My” Questions Do we really know about conflicts that happen? What types of conflicts take place? How can conflicts be resolved? Purpose To examine how female varsity athletes deal with teammate conflicts.
4. Method Participants 19 female varsity athletes (M age = 21.17 years) Individual Interviews Trained researchers Anonymity and confidentiality Analysis Interviews transcribed Coded to identify: (a) Types of conflict (b) Conflict management strategies
5. Conflicts Happen! “I guess it just sucks but it's [conflict] always gonna happen” “You’re never gonna be able to prevent having any conflict” “I don’t think you’ll ever have a season without conflict” “During girls’ sports it’s like there’s always gonna be conflicts because people’s emotions get involved” “Girls are way worse than boys…. Girls specifically do crave it [conflict]. There are girls on my team that will go looking for trouble sometimes.”
6. Types of Conflicts Performance Relationships Relationship conflicts are very hard to resolve. Performance conflicts are just you as an athlete, it’s not you as a person. Um, when you’re dealing with people as a person… their flaws are being exposed and people don’t like their flaws being exposed. It’s very uncomfortable and it’s very hard to do it in a way that’s, that you’re not criticizing them as a person.
7. Conflict Management I Team Building Early in Season Not prevention Create ‘context’ Address conflicts early
8. Conflict Management II Mediation Hierarchy with team Rarely go to coaches with relationships conflict Role of sport psychologist
9. Conflict Management III Structured Team Meetings Unstructured =BAD Process (and mediator) in place Rap sessions Written statements 24/48 ‘rule’ Maybe not coach-led?
10. So What? Assume conflicts are happening, even if you don’t know about them! Put measures in place to help manage relationship conflicts (team building, mediators, structured meetings) Teach athletes conflict management skills (Handout).
