Female Athletes And Sporting Events
Abstract
It is obvious in the Western culture; gender makes a difference within the sports. Several studies have shown how reality discriminates within female
sporting events and athletes when compared to males. The objective of this study is to examine how male athletes and sporting events dominate over
female athletes and sporting events since Title IX law was passed in 1972. The law stated that no person on the basis of sex, in the U.S. would be
discriminated against in any athletics or educational programs. Since Title IX, women have had an incline in sports participation, equal education
experience, pay salaries, respect, and position opportunities. Though Title IX did make a change for females, it is still areas for improvements in ...

In all areas listed above, female athletes and sporting events struggle and is underrepresented even with Title IX's strong implementation of equality. In
order for male athletes and sporting events to decrease the dominance over female sporting events, all the support has to start with a change in fan
support.
As a female high school athlete growing up, I witnessed how different fans supported our male and female sports. Our female soccer and basketball
games attendance would consist of mostly parents and a few students. In contrast, the male sports like football, baseball, and basketball games would
have the stands nearly full at the sound of the first horn or whistle blown. Since the male's game was right after ours in basketball, fans would start
falling in around the 3rd quarter of our game. If the entertainment and intensity improve, funds increase, and media advertising and promotion inclined
for female athletes and sporting events, male athletes and sporting events would become less dominant with the help of Title IX that provides ways of
change in the history.
Our Western culture in America defines who we are, how we act, and what we do. Masculine attributes are often common and seen as a stereotype.
Males are viewed as strong, muscular, and aggressive,

Why I Want To Avoid Female Athletes?
Many female athletes willingly take part in things that may overly sexualise them. They sign contracts to the raunchy and submissive
advertisements. They wear the uniforms that seem to be overly revealing. They themselves do not appear to have a problem with any of it,
obviously not thinking that they are being sexualised. Hope Solo who posed fully nude for ESPN the Body Issue (see figure 4, picture 3) said "I've
always been a huge fan of the magazine; it's one of my favourites. There were many athletes I admired for taking that risk and putting themselves out
there by doing these kind of shoots. I didn't even have to think about it, it was something I wanted to do." Solo clearly explains that the photo shoot
was a step out of her comfort zone but made her feel empowered and confident.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation reported that in 2013 women's sports received 7% of coverage and 0.4% of the total value of commercial
sponsorships. Which is incredibly low compared to men's sports. This is why female athletes are 'sold with sex'. Due to female sports not bringing in
huge attention, advertisements must interest and attract audiences with a different approach and that is where targeting the sex appeal comes into
play. The world's no.1 highest paid female athlete, Maria Sharapova, is proof of this. According to Forbes in 2010 her earnings were over $24.5
million, of which $23.5 million came from endorsements many including sensual

Female Athletes Beating the Odds
A very simple way to define gender roles according to Twellimona Haihambo in her article "Gender Roles and Gender Equality" could be ". . . those
behaviors, tasks and responsibilities that a society considers appropriate for men, women, boys and girls" (Sister Namibia p. 24). In other words,
society tends to dictate the rules that men and women would abide by. As a result, all sexes have been greatly affected to some extent by a conventional
gender role imposed upon them by society. Mostly in the sports industry, all kinds of restrictions surged from everywhere, weakening women strengths
and capabilities while favoring men and nurturing a machismo society.

Black Female Athletes
When other female tennis players were asked if they would become more muscular to improve their tennis game, most of them said no, claiming that
they still wanted to look like a woman. Their saying this implied that the Williams sisters appearance made them less of a woman. The Williams sisters
are one the most recent black female athletes to have their femininity questioned. In the 2012 Summer Olympics South Africa's Caster Semenya after
winning in her event was defamed because people claimed that she was not technically a woman and had undergo gender verification tests. There were
people in London taking bets on whether she was a man, woman or hermaphrodite.
This idea that black women especially those who are fit, have defined jaw lines and wide noses and are not feminine is all part of our society's
ideology. Are societies perception of beauty are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Williams slays Sharapova to reach ninth Miami Masters final" (2014 CNN) In one sentence they managed to paint Sharapova as a victim who was

while Serena Williams is an aggressor. This headline enforces the narrative of if your white and feminine you are vulnerable. And due to Williams
physique it is easy to negatively associate terms with her because her appearance does not meet the norms.
How black female athletes are viewed by society is dependent on the media coverage they receive. "Mass media, specifically sports media, has the
potential to reach large audiences through multiple mediums, thus influencing the public's view of racial stereotypes." (Desmarais & Bruce, 2010)

Women 's Impact On Female Athletes
Sports have evolved significantly over the course of time. It has transitioned from being centered predominantly on the male athletes; and has now
incorporated equal treatment towards female athletes. This transitioning did not occur over night, and it did not come easily to women who are
involved in athletics. For every level of sports for women, the inequality and unfair treatment that they received was unjust and very much so unfair. Yet
for many people outside of the athletic arena little to nothing was known about the harsh treatment or lack thereof that women received in athletics.
Until Title IX brought these issues out, most women in athletics went on unnoticed or not having the ability to achieve their maximum potential because

of federal assistance should not be discriminating against any one; and the focus was mostly on women at the time that this issue came to surface. For
so long, women have had to face significant hardship and for no cause except that they were women. Those that were given authority over them before
Title IX was passed, were not treating these female athletes as equals and it finally was brought forth and something was done to attempt to alleviate
these issues. Title IX has impacted women's athletics in various ways. Since this law was passed, enforcing the equal treatment of women on various
athletic levels; many sports took it into consideration and began to focus on the female athlete as a whole person. In a study that was conducted,
researchers observed how the physical characteristics of a practitioner can effect a person's perception of their effectiveness and of their anything that

Female Athlete Argument Essay
Back in the day, women wasn't able to play in sport. But now all around the world
women can play any sport they want. This leads me to speak about the factors that
lead to the rise of female athletes. The factors are that women are treated the same
as male athletes, they receive the same amount of pay, and when the females saw
Billie Jean Kings won versus a male athlete the females knew that anything was
possible.
To start off, the rise of female athletes are that women are treated the same as
male athletes. Women are getting treated fair because they are allowed to compete
in sports, like the NBA, when it was 1996. In source 3 it states, "On April 24, 1996,
women's basketball announced, "We Got Next" as the NBA ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bobby Riggs 40 Years ago, the prize money was the
same to the women. It states in Source 1, "2013 marks not only a personal milestone
for the tennis champ but also a series NOTES feminist milestones–the 40th Anniversary
of equal prize money at the U.S. Open, the formation of the Women's Tennis Association
and, of course, her victory over Riggs in the "Battle of the Sexes Match".
Finally, the rise of female athletes is when the females saw Billie Jean Kings won
Versus a male athlete the females knew that anything was possible. When Billie Jean
Kings beat a male athlete, women around the world knew from that point, women
can do what men can. It says "Thank you Billie Jean King–when I was just 6 years old,
you changed my life–––you showed me that "You play like a girl" can be a compliment!"
To conclude, at this point, It doesn't really matter what gender you have to be to play
sports, if you like to play sports, just play. Its 2016 you do what you want to do. So the
factors of females athletes are females get treated the same as men, they get paid the
same, and when the females saw Billie Jean King win versus male athletes, the females

The Impact Of Media On Female Athletes
threatening female athlete'' (Rowe, 2004:??). Females very rarely receive more coverage than males, despite their efforts and achievements being
equivalent (Weter and Canni, 2013). This is evident in the sport sections of newspapers as well as other forms of mediated sport. Often only a minute
portion, if any, of a newspaper page is utilised for the representation of female athletes. Media personnel attempt to permeate ideologies to wider
society through the use of media texts, often legitimising the notion that sports are naturally an activity for males. This is achieved by displaying
many images of physically powerful men (George et al, 2001: ) who depict the ideals and values of muscular Christianity. Boyle and Haynes,
(2009:122), explain that due to biological differences between men and women that have been socially established, females are very rarely
represented showing muscles and being physically powerful. George et al, (2001: ), explain that this organisation of society can be seen throughout
history and has been prominent for many years. The Victorian legacy, as explained by Boyle and Haynes (2009:123), where by female physical
ability, emotional state and limitations inflicted by society to participate in sport, can still be seen in modern society. Majendie, (2015), produced a
media text for the Independent about the gold medal winner Jessica Ennis–Hill. In this particular text she is initially referred to as the 'golden girl'.

Female Athletes As Role Models For The Sports Industry
Female athletes do not get paid as much as they deserve for the work they execute for the sports industry. Female athletes do so much for the sports
industry that is not appreciated. They are good role models for adolescent girls to be confident in themselves and to get involved in sports and
activities outside or at school. Female athletes also produce profit for the industry as well as earn money from endorsements just as male athletes do.
Although people may state that female athletes lack in many different factors, female athletes are good role models for their young viewers, they are
the driving force that generates most of the revenue for the teams' federation, and they portray the equal amount of work that the male athletes do and
therefore, should receive the same payment. Peer pressure and self–esteem are two things girls are struggling with in today's day and age, but female
athletes encourage girls to get involved in sports in order to clear up some stresses they might be having. Female athletes promote confidence and
strength which helps adolescent girls understand that these things are key to being a successful person in life. Experts state that by the age of 12,
girls are 6 times more likely to drop out of playing sports than boys because girls do not receive as many positive reinforcements about their sports
participation as boys. Female athletes can improve and change the behavior of the girls so that they will have confidence and feel like they want to

Summary: Female Athletes Should Be Paid
There are many opinions on men and women athletes income. Opponents believe that women should be paid as equally as men athletes, but
proponents argue that women athletes are paid just fine. I believe that women athletes are paid fine as they are. I think this because of how much
revenue they generate. You might not think of revenue as a good reason to have, but you'll be surprised by how much revenue takes part of an
athlete's pay. The U.S women's soccer team has won three World Cups and also get a bonus of $75,000, but Carli Lloyd and her teammates found that
if the men's team had won, they would've gotten $400,000 as a bonus. That's when the gender pay gap started for sports. Lloyd , the midfielder for the
U.S soccer team, decided to bring this matter up so women for different sports started to see the difference in pay. Many people have started to look at
this and think that this is unfair but what they don't know is why women are being paid different in sports. Some people think it's discrimination, while
some don't even have an idea but after research they found out it's because of a thing called revenue. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you research revenue you will find that it means income, so the athletes revenue that they bring is their income. According to the Junior
Scholastic article, athletes get revenue from TV rights, sponsorships, ticket sales and other sources.1 Another sport that has differences are
basketball, meaning the NBA and the WNBA. In my research on revenue for the WNBA, I learned that there are 12 teams with 12 people on each
team, so there are 144 people in WNBA. I also discovered that the WNBA tends to get $10.4 million from revenue so to split money equally, each
player gets 72,000 dollars. The NBA has 450 players and gets 5.2 billion dollars from revenue, so each player gets about $11,555,555 .2 The WNBA

Sexisim Female Athletes
The Harsh reality of the treatment of Female Athletes
Professional female athletes are some of the most talented people in the world, though they are often not treated like it. The harsh treatment of
professional female athletes in our society, reflects what our society thinks about women, that they are the weaker sex and are not as capable as men.
The amount of sexisim female athletes have to face on a day to day basis proves that in 2017, we are still living in a very sexist and male dominated
society. Although, some might argue that professional female athletes and their male counterparts are treated equally, the startling difference of pay,
the unfair media coverage, and the lack of respect directed towards female athletes proves otherwise. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Professional female athletes in general are talked about way less in the media than their male counterparts. Female athletes today are covered less in
the media, than they were 28 years ago. Only 3.2 percent of TV coverage is given to women's sports (Bianco). When female athletes are brought up in
the media, they are almost always sexulized. The media doesn't focus on their athletic accomplishment, like the do with men, instead they fixate on
their bodies, their clothing, and their relationships. The media always put female athlete's beauty in front of their athletic accomplishment, while they
do the opposite with male athletes (Liang). Don't believe it? Here's a quote that proves the sexisum, the constant sexulizing, and the lack of respect
and the constant sexulizing that female athletes have to deal with. "Let the women play in more feminine clothes like they do in volleyball. They
could, for example, have tighter shorts. "Female players are pretty, if you excuse me for saying so, and they already have some different rules to men

Female Athlete Stereotypes
The life of a female athlete
My stereotype
Female athletes are weak. Female athletes are lesbians. Female athletes showboat too much. These are stereotypes female athletes hear on a day to
day basis. Stereotypes are a horrible thing. My stereotype which is an athletic girl basically is just one of the many I can be but this one definitely
my main one. People say things like athletic girls are weak and all they do is like to exercise. It is so unfair to make judgements about people like
this. How is it fair to assume that I'm weak because I'm a girl athlete. Pretty much I'm getting compared to male athletes because they're supposed to be
strong muscle men but since I'm the opposite gender. I must have the opposite qualities according to people who stereotype. I've even heard before
girl athletes only exercise in their free time to become as strong as a male. Making assumptions like this makes absolutely no sense because there is no
real answer or factualness behind it. Stereotypes are just created because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Female Athlete Triad : A Condition
Bailey Jensen Mrs. Hable College Prep Writing 11 September 2015 Female Athlete Triad Female athlete triad is a condition where bone loss,
irregular menstrual cycles, and energy deficiency occur in athletes. Occasionally referred to as the triad, this condition is seen mostly in female
athletes, although in rare cases male athletes can suffer from it as well. It occurs so often in today 's female athletes however, due to distorted body
expectations, common menstrual irregularities, and the already lower bone densities of women. When these symptoms combine, it creates a very
serious and life–long health risk. Femaleathletetriad.org states that one of the causes is weakened bones, which, in the most severe form, is known
as osteoporosis. This state of weakened bones leads to an increased risk for injury, especially when it comes to stress fractures
(femaleathletetriad.org). Many runners get stress fractures in their shins, located on the most forward side of the calves. Stress fractures originate
mainly from over exercising with not enough recovery, not eating properly balanced meals, or from a mixture of the two. I can personally advocate
for this, as a few years ago on my own cross country team a sophomore girl cut meat and milk out of her diet while continuing to do the very
demanding varsity practices. Because she lacked the protein and calcium to fuel her muscle and bones, she developed a very bad case of shin splints,
making it nearly impossible to run at her full

Femininity Among Female Athletes
At the start of this essay, I suggested that some of the female athletes I would be interviewing may feel the need/desire to counteract their supposedly
'masculine image' they portray whilst playing sports by performing acts of femininity outside of the athletic environment. Kolnes (1995) investigated
how female athletes across four different sports reflected upon their relationship between being a female athlete and the conceptions of femininity and
reviewed that female athletes are exposed to constraints and paradoxes summarising that they are allowed to compete in sport but it cannot weaken
their heterosexual attractiveness (p.73). Being a female athlete comes with expectations to project their sexuality through their behavioural

Kevin Garnett with the salary of $28 million and the highest paid WNBA player is Diana Taurasi and she gets paid $107,000. This financial gap

Treat Injuries For Female Athletes Essay
Another way to help treat injuries for female athletes is to use a foam roller to help alleviate the pain that accompanies the injury. There are also
ways to stretch out by rolling on a foam roller and this will help keep your fascia smooth and healthy (Carlson). If the females take the time to roll out
their muscles on a foam roller they will prevent future injuries by relaxing their muscles. When the athlete is able to relax and stretch out the muscles,
this helps the muscles to be more flexible which will allow the athletes to do riskier movements in their sport. The foam roller is not the only object
that can loosen the athlete's muscles but grabbing a muscle roller stick or massage stick can bring about the same results. These ... Show more content

The coaches should take action by helping their athletes in teaching them stretches and allot the players enough time to execute these stretches before
and after their workouts or practice. The trainer at Ashley High School says, "[Female Athletes need to] educate themselves if they are at a higher risk
for injury..." (Thomas). If the female athletes realize that their bodies are more prone to injuries, they should research and figure out what can help their
body. These athletes put their body through rigorous workouts all the time and so there are many opportunities for injury. Learning from their previous
injuries should help them in figuring out how to prevent future recurrences.
Since the media does not emphasize the severity of female athlete injuries when the player experiences them, the athlete needs to learn post treatments
to help speed up the recovery time. Learning treatments for the injuries that a female athlete incurs may also help prevent any future injuries. Thomas
says, "...plyometric exercises, proprioception, agility, overall biomechanics corrective exercises." (Thomas). When a female is injured while playing a

are getting paid for doing similar jobs. Even though this seems like a huge difference in wages, the difference in wage is a huge difference in
professional sports. Many would argue that female athletes should get paid the same as male athletes, but there are also many that would argue the
opposite. Gender equality laws call for this, but the fact that female athletes do not provide the same profit as male athletes is not noted when it comes

maximum in the WNBA. The NBA must have a very high profit if they are able to pay their athletes half a million dollars at the very least
compared to the WNBA's $107,000 maximum salary. Another big difference is the attendance of fans at games which provide a majority of the
profit for athletics. In division one college basketball, which is the highest division for college athletics, the average home fan attendance for male

Discrimination In Female Athletes
Beginning of the 20th century, the feminist movement has made massive steps to improve the position of female athletes. Prior to the movement's
accomplishments, female athletes had to play in much worse facilities, under altered rules, and with harsher dress codes than male athletes. More
females than ever before are partaking in an assorted range of sports. The problem with this is, that female athletes are dealing with society often
viewing them as non–feminine. Many agree that females should take up more 'feminine' sports such as volleyball, gymnastics, softball and so on. In
my paper, I'm going to explain how society has typically neglected and discriminates towards female athletes, stereotyping females as masculine and or

When we think of sports, we think of men going at it during a football or a basketball game. When female athletes that play in the WNBA or compete

When thinking of competitive athletes, do names such as Cynthia Cooper, or Billie

capable on any field, court or rink as any male athlete. It is no secret that men have always been viewed as the dominant athletes and anyone saying
otherwise was wrong. However, the signing of Title IX in 1972 has contributed to the change of this common view. Title IX mandated all institutions
receiving federal funding to fund athletics for both men and woman. As put in the article, Title IX and the Growth of Women's Athletics," Title IX has

One common argument about women athletics is that they are not capable of performing at the same competitive level as men. But as proved by

Gilhool's article, "She beat Bobby to the ball, dominated the net and ran him around the baseline to the point of near

The Pros And Cons Of Female Athletes
Intro
Female athletes should be able to compete against men because it's a competition, but it would be hard for women. They would not complain about
being hurt but some girls get hurt more then boys. Girls can be stronger than boys but some girls are weak. People think female athletes should be
able to because they need to be able to experience what it is like to take a risk. logos Mastering a skill once thought to belong strictly to the male
domain, such as dunking. And it's because it's a competition. Then others say it would be to hard for the woman. Girls can be like the boys strong than

Female Athletes Should Get Paid Essay
"Somewhere behind the athlete you've become and the hours of practice and the coaches who pushed you is a little girl who fell in love with the
game and never looked back, play for her." –Mia Hamm. Female athletes and female sports is a topic that is often debated upon. Many people feel as
though female sports are not as much of a concern as male sports. Female athletes are treated unfairly as they get paid significantly less and they are
rarely on regular tv. Female athletes are receiving an income but that income is not nearly enough. By way of example, female athletes are paid
less in all sports and events they partake in. "On average, an NBA player makes $28,000 per game for a season total of $2.3 million. The average
WNBA player makes only slightly more than $30,000 for an entire season" (Delaney). To delve further, the athletes feel this way about the situation
as well. "Making the national team is definitely one of my life goals, but the reality of women's hockey is that you can't make a living out of it"
Jordan Smelker says who plays professional hockey for the Boston Blades (Springer). Not only is there the issue of professionals not getting paid
enough, but the college recruits are not offered enough in scholarship dollars. Female college ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They receive a lower income and most television reports and programs will not have female athletes in them. This is real and the fact of the matter
is the athletes have become use to this practice and behavior. They know that they are not treated fairly and sexism plays a huge role in sports. The
athletes have come to accept that television channels and sports reports feel that women's sports are a waste entirely and that they take time away
from when they could be shoving male sports in your face. It is important to think about how this affects women. If everyone worked together to fix
this problem, we could be rid of sexism in

Female Athletes Stri For Gender Equity In Coaching
First of all, females aren't likely to stay bodily active for health benefits because of personal choices. However, according to the data from America's
Health Rankings in 2015, there was 25.6% of females that are bodily inactive than males (21.7%). Women need to be aware of their weight in order
to prevent from cardiovascular disease or any other health problems, which is why involving in sports/outdoor activities no matter the age, will help
control the weight. Not only will sports help you stay fit but will develop extensive knowledge via obtaining health authorities. Technically, females
who have been around with sports in their early age have much more potential to staying fit because they were born naturally athletic or talented rather
than someone who's forced or needs to exercise daily, but of course, both methods work to changing a lifestyle. As far as the women athlete goes

Analysis: Why Female Athletes Should Be Paid
There as been equality in professional sports for a long time. The men are getting paid way more than the women athletes. Some would say that the
men should be paid more because watching men is exciting, and women's sports aren't fun to watch. Also, because in some sports the men generate
more attendance or revenue. Women have started to generate a bigger audience and more revenue in some sports. Women are doing the same thing
as men. They work just as hard and maybe harder because they are trying to prove a point to everyone. Women should be paid the same as the men in
professional sports. The Women's U.S. Soccer Team made less than the Men's U.S. Soccer Team but no one knows why because the women's team is
doing better than the men's. In 2016, the Women's U.S. Team filed a complaint to the U.S. Soccer for wage discrimination. They alleged that... Show

Franklin told all of the participants that she found a direct link between stress and student illness. There are four rules for performing an ethical
psychological experiment. The first rule is, informed consent, this means that all participants in the study must know in advance about the type of study

The second rule for conducting an ethical research project is, the right to be protected from harm or discomfort. In this study there wasn't really

Improving the Perception of Female Athletes Essay example
Sports have been a part of this world since the beginning of mankind; the Olympics, for example, began during the times of Ancient Greece and
those same games are as popular as ever and still continue today. However, back in the very beginning of sports history, men were the only gender
granted the right to participate in athletic events; sometimes women were not even allowed be in the same general vicinity to watch. Sure, the days
have changed, yet women still cease to receive the same amount of recognition in sports as men do. Why should the world care? Imagine working so

The only woman soccer player who exceeded the $50,000 a year barrier was Mia Hamm, who was paid an astonishing $1,000,000 a year (Pchola &
Wadley 4). These issues only scratch the surface of why females are underrated in the world of sports. The first solution would be a day promoting
women in sports–a national Women in Sports Day per say. The day could be dedicated to bringing the issue of the underrepresentation of women to the
public eye. Additionally, female sports do not get as much air time as male sports do. For example, a study done by USC and Purdue sociologists
discovered that in 2009, men took up approximately 96% of sports news. Even the information scrolling along the bottom of the screen on ESPN is
dedicated to only men's sports approximately 95% of the time (Ruffle 50). With that being said, television could show programs and women's games
to encourage fans to take interest in the many different successful female teams this country has to offer. However, this solution could backfire
because, at the end of the day, ESPN and all of the other sports channels really do care about their ratings. If they showed a women's soccer game
over a huge NBA rivalry game, the ratings could dramatically drop. Nonetheless, female sports could receive the same amount of popularity as men's
sports if they are given the same chance. Moreover, the second solution could be increasing the pay of female athletes at the professional level. In
comparison to the pay that men's

Since the media does not emphasize the severity of female athlete injuries when the player experiences them, the athlete needs to learn post–treatments
to help speed up the recovery time. Learning treatments for the injuries that a female athlete incurs may also help prevent any future injuries. Thomas
says, "plyometric exercises, proprioception, agility, overall biomechanics corrective exercises" (Thomas). When afemale is injured while playing a

The author of "4 Amazing Stretches for Injury Prevention" Caitlyn Carlson says, "The therapist uses their body as leverage to create traction and
gently moves your limbs in a wave–like motion" (Carlson). The physical therapist will focus on treating and strengthening the injured area or muscle
while trying to prevent the injury from getting worse. The massage therapist will massage and relax the injured area to help the body to not feel the
pain of the injury as bad as the initial pain was. After females encounter an injury, a helpful way to treat it is to go to a therapist and get them to stretch
out any stiff muscles that can cause many further injuries. Females need to work on their muscles and get them stretched when injured. Getting a plan
from the therapist to do this at home can also help prevent any future injuries.
One of the main issues that female athletes run into is that the media tends to focus on the male injuries and the severity of their injuries and
completely overlook the females injuries. Male athletes may look like they play sports that are tougher than females do, for example football, but the
way female bodies are made they are more prone to get injured in their athletic endeavors. Schmerling emphasizes this issue in "The Gender Gap in
Sports Injuries," saying, "you might think that sports injuries are more common among male than female athletes. That may be true for college and
NFL football players, since nearly all are male.

Female Athlete Repercussion
How many times have we all sat glued to our televisions during the summer or winter Olympics, admiring the young female athletes competing in such

popular topic of discussion among many coaches and even overly ambitious parents. Nowadays, girls at a very young age are becoming more and

The three components of the triad are eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, lack of menstruation (also known as secondary amenorrhea) due
to low estrogen production, and osteoporosis, or thinning of the bones. The specific component of the triad syndrome I am focusing on is amenorrhea.
It is a condition that is associated with reductions in heart, reproductive, and bone health. It can be classified as either late onset of menstruation or
loss of menses for at least three months. The first symptom of the triad generally begins with an eating disorder, a very serious and widespread
problem among young female athletes. If left untreated, anorexia or bulimia can lead to amenorrhea.
Amenorrhea is a condition of which I have first–hand knowledge. As a former gymnastic competitor and a current teacher in our family–owned gym, I
have seen the effects that strenuous exercise and low calorie intake can have on a young, fragile body. Any girl or young woman who competes in
sports such as gymnastics, ice–skating, dance, or running is especially vulnerable. Sometimes the very traits that make her successful –competitiveness,
stubbornness and perfectionism – also make her more susceptible to amenorrhea. She will do anything to run a little faster or perform a little better,
while maintaining low body weight so that she will look perfect doing it. But being under such intense pressure to

The scoreboard does not recognize if the conquered points are achievements of male or female athletes, then why does Canadian society? Sports

definition does not specify if sports are better suited for males or females, yet there remains to be debate present over the equality – or lack thereof –

The problem here extends even further to the fact that most of sports editors and authors are male. The inequality present in Canadian athletics is not
new; it has been noted that between the years 1954 to 1987, 90.8% of Sports Illustrated articles were of discriminatory nature and tended to focus on
white male athletes by writing lengthy articles and consequently resulting in shorter and biased articles for females and black athletes. With restraints
from the media – an important medium of athletic information for the public and sports scouts – females have faced a difficult past in regards to
successfully promoting their achievements and careers. Furthermore, it has been noted that females are more often to be considered for coverage if
they were participating in aesthetic sports, rather than men.
There are many specific instances through which gender inequality can be analyzed. It has been advertised by many university athletic departments that
there is a comparable number of stories in news releases for both men and women; however, the news releases on the men's team were usually longer.
One may assume that teams that were more successful deserved more detailed and thoroughly reviewed coverage, yet the men's and women's

Female Athletes And Male Athletes
It's pretty clear that in today's society males are the dominate figure in sports. Unlike female athletes, men receive a tremendous amount of media
attention than female athletes. Young boys grow up watching television bombarded with heroic images of male athletes. They have something to look
up to, while young girls do not receive the same images. Male and female athletes have many equal opportunities when it comes to playing and
succeeding in sports. Yet it seems that male sports happen to catch more of the limelight when it comes to the media and the publicity they receive for
the athletics performances. Women have been fighting this battle against the media for many years now. The problem is that women athletes are
portrayed as sex symbols and are not taken seriously as athletes. Female athletes make up 40 percent of sports participants nationally, but only received
8 percent of the entire sports coverage. With that being said, this literature review examines how the sports portray the female athlete compared to how
the media represents them. Since the 20th century, female athletes have made enormous strides to improve their status. Prior to these efforts and
achievements, female athletes had to play in much poorer facilities under different rules and with stricter dress codes than male athletes. Society also
ignored and discriminated against female athletes. This discrimination portrayed them as masculine rather than feminine due to the sport they play and

The Black female student–athlete body is a topic of great interest with little research in athletic administration. In explorations of women and how they
view their bodies, and the bodies of others, based on visual frames in the media and advertising, the research either inaccurately represents Black
females, or fails to include their unique experiences into the discussion. Meager research on Black female student–athletes creates a problem when
trying to draw accurate conclusions. This paper explores the sexualized visual framing of Black female athletes, how they are invisible and hyper
visible, and the knowledge gap that exists regarding Black female student– athletes unique experiences. (Cranmer, Harris, & Lancaster, 2006; Mowatt,

Cranmer, et al. (2006) recommended future research on:
The unique experiences of Black female athletes and how meaning is assigned to their athleticism in an effort to extend the progress that has been
made in sport for Black male athletes deserves continued attention. Such research on Black female athletes would provide a platform for them to
share their raced and gendered experiences and play a critical role in the reframing of who they are as complex beings. (p. 224)
In the ten years since Cranmer et al. (2006) wrote this article, progress toward better research on Black female athletes has languished. The authors
expressed great concern that many sexualized images of female athletes come from magazines; a ubiquitous medium consumed with little critical
thought or challenge. This creates an environment that perpetuates the sexualization of Black women's bodies as White men's pleasure objects
(Cranmer et al., 2006; Mowatt et al., 2013). The research fails to answer the question of how the sexualization of Black female athletes in media affects
Black female student–athletes.

The Gendered Discourse On Female Athletes And Coaches
"Man Up:" Understanding the Gendered Discourse on Female Athletes and Coaches
I once had a soccer coach who told me to "man up" when I came off the soccer field with a swollen, black eye. He asked me if I was going to "cry like
a girl" or get back in my position on the field. Being a fourteen year old girl, I cried. But I returned to the field and continued playing. From recreation
league to intercollegiate athletics, the one thing my coaches had in common was that they were male. I play on various teams: soccer, volleyball, rugby,
cycling, and basketball, but never once did I have a female coach. Studies show that female athletes who did not have a female coach are less likely
to go into the coaching profession (cite). Despite this statistic, I started coaching youth soccer, basketball, and swim teams when I was in college. I
did not seek out a coaching positon and had little confidence in my abilities to guide a team, but a parent volunteer approached me and asked if I
would volunteer as an assistant and be an athletic role model.
Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments Act prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational programs, but it had the greatest impact in

The Three Elements of the Female Athlete Triad
For an increasing number of women in the United States, a concern or preoccupation with body weight and size is a constant pressure. Female
athletes, like most women in our society, are also often pressured to conform to certain ideal body sizes and shapes, as dictated by the entertainment and
fashion industries. Female athletes, however, face a twofold pressure. They face the burden that our culture places on all women to be thin, but they
also face the burden from coaches, parents, and other athletes to succeed in sports and look good doing so by maintaining an unrealistically low weight.

caloric intake, skipping meals, using diet pills, and many other pathogenic weight control behaviors. Having stated these limitations, there are a
number of studies which do in fact indicate that female athletes struggle more with eating disorders than average females. Studies report that the rate
of disordered eating among female athletes may be as high as 62% in certain sports (Yeager, Agostini, Nattiv, and Drinkwater, 1993). While a study of
college female swimmers found 15.4% were affected, a study of college gymnasts showed that 62% of collegiate female athletes had seriously
abnormal eating patterns. Smith (1996) found that disordered eating is most common among those in appearance sports, such as gymnastics, ballet,
figure skating, equestrian sports, and diving. However, disordered eating behavior can be seen in other sports in which appearance is not as important,
such as tennis, swimming, and running. Skolnick (1993) also notes that another study of 182 female athletes, who participated in a variety of college

Gender Bias: How Men and Female Athletes are treated Different in Sports.
What is the first thing that pops up in your head, when you think of professional sports? Does soccer, basketball, softball, tennis, or baseball cross
your mind? All these sports have one similar element, which is that all these sports are predominantly played by a single gender. Being a female athlete
in middle school and high school, I can tell you that a lot of organizations do not look at male athletes and female athletes the same. In today's world
male sports have no competition when it comes to female sports. Many people in the media and society feel that woman athletes are not a source of
talent in today's sports. Which is not fair. Female athletes dream to become a professional player, just as well as male athletes. Just by my personal
experience, statistics, sports channels and other information, you can see that women's sports have very little importance.
When it comes to women in the media they do not get represented very well and they tend to be poorly portrayed as well. Men are the largest
consumers, players, and of sports. So media focus more on male sports and athletes. This may be the reason women are advised not to be engaged in
sports and how their gender is presented in the media. Some people think that if more women participate in sports, the media would be fairer. In
today's society, the media focuses more on women's looks

fact, the signing of Title IX, the enactment of equal prize money at Wimbledon, and even the beginnings of the WNBA stand to be crucial factors to
lead to the rise of female athletes.
To start off with, the misconception of women being less important, less intelligent, less strong, and less anything in the comparison of men is an

Female Athletes And Professional Sports Essay
Women in professional sports fits into the Sex and Power: Global Gender Inequality class because many female athletes have experienced the
inequalities in a professional sports setting. Female athletes are being put down by gender inequalities, causing less females participating in athletic
programs. Women athletes are being paid less than their male counterparts. Along with being paid less, female and males are receiving unequal benefits
in the form of scholarship, media coverage, transportation, and stadium conditions. The professional sport's world is filled with the obsession of body
image and sexuality. Through this obsession, female athletes have been abused from the people they trust the most. There is an increasing inequality in
women's professional sports in the form of pay, sexuality, and abuse. Twenty
–seven Division I colleges participated in a study where researchers found
male athletes received almost six hundred dollars more in scholarships than female athletes and coaches of male teams earned around 190,000
dollars more than coaches of female teams (Kenschaft & Clark, 2016: 355). To earn almost 200,000 dollars more for coaching males instead of
females, is only contributing to the sexist theories of women in sports. We wonder why so many female teams cannot find strong coaches but they are
all headed to coach the men's teams to receive more money. The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team received two million dollars for winning the

The female athlete triad is a health condition in which active women experience three inter–related disorders due to unhealthy body weight and eating
habits. In the case of the triad, the word active refers to females who display moderate to high intensity levels of performance. The rate of performance
must be high in order to counterbalance the decrease in calorie intake. Females who perform at a high intensity are at risk for the triad since they do
not take in enough calories to fulfill the amount expended. The three disorders within the female athlete triad are osteoporosis, disordered eating, and

Low bone mineral density can result in stress fractures within a female's body (6). Female athletes with menstrual dysfunction often display low levels
of the reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone. When the levels of these hormones are low, it is difficult for bones to retain calcium which
causes a gradual loss of bone mass. It has been proven that when comparing amenorrhic athletes to athletes with regular menstrual cycles, the bone
mineral density if reduced by 14% in amenorrhic athletes and 27% in regular athletic women (7). All three conditions result in serious health and body
conditions which can decrease a female's ability to participate in physical activities. The female athlete triad is considered to be a significant health
concern. In relation to the female athlete triad, some women are more prone to the condition than others. Sports that emphasize performance based on

Female Athletes And Sporting Events

  • 1. Female Athletes And Sporting Events Abstract It is obvious in the Western culture; gender makes a difference within the sports. Several studies have shown how reality discriminates within female sporting events and athletes when compared to males. The objective of this study is to examine how male athletes and sporting events dominate over female athletes and sporting events since Title IX law was passed in 1972. The law stated that no person on the basis of sex, in the U.S. would be discriminated against in any athletics or educational programs. Since Title IX, women have had an incline in sports participation, equal education experience, pay salaries, respect, and position opportunities. Though Title IX did make a change for females, it is still areas for improvements in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In all areas listed above, female athletes and sporting events struggle and is underrepresented even with Title IX's strong implementation of equality. In order for male athletes and sporting events to decrease the dominance over female sporting events, all the support has to start with a change in fan support. As a female high school athlete growing up, I witnessed how different fans supported our male and female sports. Our female soccer and basketball games attendance would consist of mostly parents and a few students. In contrast, the male sports like football, baseball, and basketball games would have the stands nearly full at the sound of the first horn or whistle blown. Since the male's game was right after ours in basketball, fans would start falling in around the 3rd quarter of our game. If the entertainment and intensity improve, funds increase, and media advertising and promotion inclined for female athletes and sporting events, male athletes and sporting events would become less dominant with the help of Title IX that provides ways of change in the history. Our Western culture in America defines who we are, how we act, and what we do. Masculine attributes are often common and seen as a stereotype. Males are viewed as strong, muscular, and aggressive, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Why I Want To Avoid Female Athletes? Many female athletes willingly take part in things that may overly sexualise them. They sign contracts to the raunchy and submissive advertisements. They wear the uniforms that seem to be overly revealing. They themselves do not appear to have a problem with any of it, obviously not thinking that they are being sexualised. Hope Solo who posed fully nude for ESPN the Body Issue (see figure 4, picture 3) said "I've always been a huge fan of the magazine; it's one of my favourites. There were many athletes I admired for taking that risk and putting themselves out there by doing these kind of shoots. I didn't even have to think about it, it was something I wanted to do." Solo clearly explains that the photo shoot was a step out of her comfort zone but made her feel empowered and confident.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation reported that in 2013 women's sports received 7% of coverage and 0.4% of the total value of commercial sponsorships. Which is incredibly low compared to men's sports. This is why female athletes are 'sold with sex'. Due to female sports not bringing in huge attention, advertisements must interest and attract audiences with a different approach and that is where targeting the sex appeal comes into play. The world's no.1 highest paid female athlete, Maria Sharapova, is proof of this. According to Forbes in 2010 her earnings were over $24.5 million, of which $23.5 million came from endorsements many including sensual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis: Female Athletes Beating The Odds Female Athletes Beating the Odds A very simple way to define gender roles according to Twellimona Haihambo in her article "Gender Roles and Gender Equality" could be ". . . those behaviors, tasks and responsibilities that a society considers appropriate for men, women, boys and girls" (Sister Namibia p. 24). In other words, society tends to dictate the rules that men and women would abide by. As a result, all sexes have been greatly affected to some extent by a conventional gender role imposed upon them by society. Mostly in the sports industry, all kinds of restrictions surged from everywhere, weakening women strengths and capabilities while favoring men and nurturing a machismo society. According to an article found on "Northnet.org" that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because, it is possible that even the media in the sports industry is "Sabotaging" female sports, by not giving it enough "Airtime". Evelyn Shoop, a reporter from the Daily Beast in her researches found "ESPN's SportsCenter covered women's sports 2.2 percent of the time in 1999, 2.1 percent in 2004, and 1.4 percent in 2010–abysmal across the board" (www.DailyBeast.com). Why? A proposed answer to this question could be "Because people are not watching female sports". But, the fact is that the sports channels are responsible to broadcast the games not the person behind the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Black Female Athletes When other female tennis players were asked if they would become more muscular to improve their tennis game, most of them said no, claiming that they still wanted to look like a woman. Their saying this implied that the Williams sisters appearance made them less of a woman. The Williams sisters are one the most recent black female athletes to have their femininity questioned. In the 2012 Summer Olympics South Africa's Caster Semenya after winning in her event was defamed because people claimed that she was not technically a woman and had undergo gender verification tests. There were people in London taking bets on whether she was a man, woman or hermaphrodite. This idea that black women especially those who are fit, have defined jaw lines and wide noses and are not feminine is all part of our society's ideology. Are societies perception of beauty are... "Williams slays Sharapova to reach ninth Miami Masters final" (2014 CNN) In one sentence they managed to paint Sharapova as a victim who was violently destroyed by Serena Williams. So even though Williams won fairly; Sharapova is painted as a victim who should be sympathized with, while Serena Williams is an aggressor. This headline enforces the narrative of if your white and feminine you are vulnerable. And due to Williams physique it is easy to negatively associate terms with her because her appearance does not meet the norms. How black female athletes are viewed by society is dependent on the media coverage they receive. "Mass media, specifically sports media, has the potential to reach large audiences through multiple mediums, thus influencing the public's view of racial stereotypes." • 5. Women 's Impact On Female Athletes Sports have evolved significantly over the course of time. It has transitioned from being centered predominantly on the male athletes; and has now incorporated equal treatment towards female athletes. This transitioning did not occur over night, and it did not come easily to women who are involved in athletics. For every level of sports for women, the inequality and unfair treatment that they received was unjust and very much so unfair. Yet for many people outside of the athletic arena little to nothing was known about the harsh treatment or lack thereof that women received in athletics. Until Title IX brought these issues out, most women in athletics went on unnoticed or not having the ability to achieve their maximum potential because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Education Equality– Feminist Majority Foundation. (2014, October 10). Retrieved November 17, 2014, from http://www.feminist.org/education /titleix.asp). This definition of Title IX speaks for itself in all ways because it shows that all forms of sports and athletics that are receiving any type of federal assistance should not be discriminating against any one; and the focus was mostly on women at the time that this issue came to surface. For so long, women have had to face significant hardship and for no cause except that they were women. Those that were given authority over them before Title IX was passed, were not treating these female athletes as equals and it finally was brought forth and something was done to attempt to alleviate these issues. Title IX has impacted women's athletics in various ways. Since this law was passed, enforcing the equal treatment of women on various athletic levels; many sports took it into consideration and began to focus on the female athlete as a whole person. • 6. Female Athlete Argument Essay Back in the day, women wasn't able to play in sport. But now all around the world women can play any sport they want. This leads me to speak about the factors that lead to the rise of female athletes. The factors are that women are treated the same as male athletes, they receive the same amount of pay, and when the females saw Billie Jean Kings won versus a male athlete the females knew that anything was possible. To start off, the rise of female athletes are that women are treated the same as male athletes. Women are getting treated fair because they are allowed to compete in sports, like the NBA, when it was 1996. Finally, the rise of female athletes is when the females saw Billie Jean Kings won Versus a male athlete the females knew that anything was possible. When Billie Jean Kings beat a male athlete, women around the world knew from that point, women can do what men can. It says "Thank you Billie Jean King–when I was just 6 years old, you changed my life–––you showed me that "You play like a girl" can be a compliment!" To conclude, at this point, It doesn't really matter what gender you have to be to play sports, if you like to play sports, just play. Its 2016 you do what you want to do. So the factors of females athletes are females get treated the same as men, they get paid the same, and when the females saw Billie Jean King win versus male athletes, the females knew anything is ... • 8. The Impact Of Media On Female Athletes threatening female athlete'' (Rowe, 2004:??). Females very rarely receive more coverage than males, despite their efforts and achievements being equivalent (Weter and Canni, 2013). This is evident in the sport sections of newspapers as well as other forms of mediated sport. Often only a minute portion, if any, of a newspaper page is utilised for the representation of female athletes. Media personnel attempt to permeate ideologies to wider society through the use of media texts, often legitimising the notion that sports are naturally an activity for males. This is achieved by displaying many images of physically powerful men (George et al, 2001: ) who depict the ideals and values of muscular Christianity. Boyle and Haynes, (2009:122), explain that due to biological differences between men and women that have been socially established, females are very rarely represented showing muscles and being physically powerful. George et al, (2001: ), explain that this organisation of society can be seen throughout history and has been prominent for many years. The Victorian legacy, as explained by Boyle and Haynes (2009:123), where by female physical ability, emotional state and limitations inflicted by society to participate in sport, can still be seen in modern society. Majendie, (2015), produced a media text for the Independent about the gold medal winner Jessica Ennis–Hill. In this particular text she is initially referred to as the 'golden girl'. • 9. Female Athletes As Role Models For The Sports Industry Female athletes do not get paid as much as they deserve for the work they execute for the sports industry. Female athletes do so much for the sports industry that is not appreciated. They are good role models for adolescent girls to be confident in themselves and to get involved in sports and activities outside or at school. Female athletes also produce profit for the industry as well as earn money from endorsements just as male athletes do. Although people may state that female athletes lack in many different factors, female athletes are good role models for their young viewers, they are the driving force that generates most of the revenue for the teams' federation, and they portray the equal amount of work that the male athletes do and therefore, should receive the same payment. Peer pressure and self–esteem are two things girls are struggling with in today's day and age, but female athletes encourage girls to get involved in sports in order to clear up some stresses they might be having. Female athletes promote confidence and strength which helps adolescent girls understand that these things are key to being a successful person in life. Experts state that by the age of 12, girls are 6 times more likely to drop out of playing sports than boys because girls do not receive as many positive reinforcements about their sports participation as boys. • 10. Summary: Female Athletes Should Be Paid There are many opinions on men and women athletes income. Opponents believe that women should be paid as equally as men athletes, but proponents argue that women athletes are paid just fine. I believe that women athletes are paid fine as they are. I think this because of how much revenue they generate. You might not think of revenue as a good reason to have, but you'll be surprised by how much revenue takes part of an athlete's pay. The U.S women's soccer team has won three World Cups and also get a bonus of $75,000, but Carli Lloyd and her teammates found that if the men's team had won, they would've gotten $400,000 as a bonus. That's when the gender pay gap started for sports. Lloyd , the midfielder for the U.S soccer team, decided to bring this matter up so women for different sports started to see the difference in pay. Many people have started to look at this and think that this is unfair but what they don't know is why women are being paid different in sports. Some people think it's discrimination, while some don't even have an idea but after research they found out it's because of a thing called revenue. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the Junior Scholastic article, athletes get revenue from TV rights, sponsorships, ticket sales and other sources.1 Another sport that has differences are basketball, meaning the NBA and the WNBA. In my research on revenue for the WNBA, I learned that there are 12 teams with 12 people on each team, so there are 144 people in WNBA. I also discovered that the WNBA tends to get $10.4 million from revenue so to split money equally, each player gets 72,000 dollars. The NBA has 450 players and gets 5.2 billion dollars from revenue, so each player gets about $11,555,555 .2 The WNBA can't afford to give salaries like that because of how much revenue they ... • 11. Sexisim Female Athletes The Harsh reality of the treatment of Female Athletes Professional female athletes are some of the most talented people in the world, though they are often not treated like it. The harsh treatment of professional female athletes in our society, reflects what our society thinks about women, that they are the weaker sex and are not as capable as men. The amount of sexisim female athletes have to face on a day to day basis proves that in 2017, we are still living in a very sexist and male dominated society. Although, some might argue that professional female athletes and their male counterparts are treated equally, the startling difference of pay, the unfair media coverage, and the lack of respect directed towards female athletes proves otherwise. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Professional female athletes in general are talked about way less in the media than their male counterparts. Female athletes today are covered less in the media, than they were 28 years ago. Only 3.2 percent of TV coverage is given to women's sports (Bianco). When female athletes are brought up in the media, they are almost always sexulized. The media doesn't focus on their athletic accomplishment, like the do with men, instead they fixate on their bodies, their clothing, and their relationships. The media always put female athlete's beauty in front of their athletic accomplishment, while they do the opposite with male athletes (Liang). Don't believe it? Here's a quote that proves the sexisum, the constant sexulizing, and the lack of respect and the constant sexulizing that female athletes have to deal with. "Let the women play in more feminine clothes like they do in volleyball. They could, for example, have tighter shorts. "Female players are pretty, if you excuse me for saying so, and they already have some different rules to men –– such as playing with a lighter ball. • 12. Female Athlete Stereotypes The life of a female athlete My stereotype Female athletes are weak. Female athletes are lesbians. Female athletes showboat too much. These are stereotypes female athletes hear on a day to day basis. Stereotypes are a horrible thing. My stereotype which is an athletic girl basically is just one of the many I can be but this one definitely my main one. People say things like athletic girls are weak and all they do is like to exercise. It is so unfair to make judgements about people like this. How is it fair to assume that I'm weak because I'm a girl athlete. Pretty much I'm getting compared to male athletes because they're supposed to be strong muscle men but since I'm the opposite gender. I must have the opposite qualities according to people who stereotype. I've even heard before girl athletes only exercise in their free time to become as strong as a male. • 13. Female Athlete Triad : A Condition Bailey Jensen Mrs. Hable College Prep Writing 11 September 2015 Female Athlete Triad Female athlete triad is a condition where bone loss, irregular menstrual cycles, and energy deficiency occur in athletes. Occasionally referred to as the triad, this condition is seen mostly in female athletes, although in rare cases male athletes can suffer from it as well. It occurs so often in today 's female athletes however, due to distorted body expectations, common menstrual irregularities, and the already lower bone densities of women. When these symptoms combine, it creates a very serious and life–long health risk. Femaleathletetriad.org states that one of the causes is weakened bones, which, in the most severe form, is known as osteoporosis. This state of weakened bones leads to an increased risk for injury, especially when it comes to stress fractures (femaleathletetriad.org). Many runners get stress fractures in their shins, located on the most forward side of the calves. Stress fractures originate mainly from over exercising with not enough recovery, not eating properly balanced meals, or from a mixture of the two. I can personally advocate for this, as a few years ago on my own cross country team a sophomore girl cut meat and milk out of her diet while continuing to do the very demanding varsity practices. Because she lacked the protein and calcium to fuel her muscle and bones, she developed a very bad case of shin splints, making it nearly impossible to run at her full ... Femininity Among Female Athletes At the start of this essay, I suggested that some of the female athletes I would be interviewing may feel the need/desire to counteract their supposedly 'masculine image' they portray whilst playing sports by performing acts of femininity outside of the athletic environment. Kolnes (1995) investigated how female athletes across four different sports reflected upon their relationship between being a female athlete and the conceptions of femininity and reviewed that female athletes are exposed to constraints and paradoxes summarising that they are allowed to compete in sport but it cannot weaken their heterosexual attractiveness (p.73). When a WNBA All–Star team wins the team only receives $2,500. All of these stats display the huge financial gap between professional men and women basketball players. Some might say these gaps could be because of funding. But then the question of why is the difference of funding so huge. There are also ways to stretch out by rolling on a foam roller and this will help keep your fascia smooth and healthy (Carlson). If the females take the time to roll out their muscles on a foam roller they will prevent future injuries by relaxing their muscles. When the athlete is able to relax and stretch out the muscles, this helps the muscles to be more flexible which will allow the athletes to do riskier movements in their sport. This is a huge difference and is unequal if both sexes are getting paid for doing similar jobs. In division one college basketball, which is the highest division for college athletics, the average home fan attendance for male competition in 2014 was "4,817" compared to "1,526" for female competition and this is with most colleges in the U.S. sharing the arenas between males and females. (p. 224) In the ten years since Cranmer et al. (2006) wrote this article, progress toward better research on Black female athletes has languished. The authors expressed great concern that many sexualized images of female athletes come from magazines; a ubiquitous medium consumed with little critical thought or challenge. This creates an environment that perpetuates the sexualization of Black women's bodies as White men's pleasure objects (Cranmer et al., 2006; Mowatt et al., 2013). The research fails to answer the question of how the sexualization of Black female athletes in media affects Black female student–athletes. Baugh, Mullis, Mullis, Hicks, and Peterson (2010) state that Black women come from a culture more accepting of a larger body, and experience less pressure to be thin. This ... • 33. The Gendered Discourse On Female Athletes And Coaches "Man Up:" Understanding the Gendered Discourse on Female Athletes and Coaches I once had a soccer coach who told me to "man up" when I came off the soccer field with a swollen, black eye. He asked me if I was going to "cry like a girl" or get back in my position on the field. Being a fourteen year old girl, I cried. But I returned to the field and continued playing. From recreation league to intercollegiate athletics, the one thing my coaches had in common was that they were male. I play on various teams: soccer, volleyball, rugby, cycling, and basketball, but never once did I have a female coach. Studies show that female athletes who did not have a female coach are less likely to go into the coaching profession (cite). Despite this statistic, I started coaching youth soccer, basketball, and swim teams when I was in college. I did not seek out a coaching positon and had little confidence in my abilities to guide a team, but a parent volunteer approached me and asked if I would volunteer as an assistant and be an athletic role model. Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments Act prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational programs, but it had the greatest impact in increasing the opportunity for females in sports. The participation opportunities for females in sports are at its highest rate ever with 9,581 women's intercollegiate teams in the NCAA in 2014, an increase of 307 since 2012 (Acosta & Carptenter, 2014). You work your butt off to get a scholarship, and at the end of your senior year, your last game. At the end you see a college scout walking towards you, your heart pounds, he says you are a very talented athlete, but sadly we don't have the money to get you a scholarship. Sports are a popular activity all over, gender should not be in any part of equality, fairness, and treatment of athletes. A majority a female undergraduates (116) took a survey and said they have interest in sports and physical fitness, but very few were actually involved in a club and or activity. Don't you think people who like and enjoy sports and put in hard work and they practice hard deserve fair choices to what they want to do with their life? Do you think we have that today? Furthermore, according to a study involvement in college athletics has dropped. Just picture this, you played a sport in high school, and it is the best sport and you love everything about it. Then, you decide to quit just because female athletes don't get as equal of opportunity as male athletes get. In addition, according to the NCAA Gender Equity Study (1992). Males have twice as much athletic opportunities as women do in NCAA Division I–III schools. People say this is adding to lesser participation in sports (Miller, Baker, and Heinrich, 2000). Don't you think as a female athlete you deserve an equal chance to play sports men play, and you are better than half the team but people say girls don't deserve a fair chance. Next, in 2010, high school have more than 3.2 million women involved in sports(compared to 295,000 in 1972), According to the National Federation of State High School Associations. Plus, the National Collegiate Athletic Association states more than 193,000 women play college sports. (Issitt, 2014). Picture this, you play as a kicker on the men's varsity football team and you are a girl. Plus it is the state championship and you are down by one and the offense is in perfect position, you walk on the field and and kick the game winning field goal and set a high school record. • 35. Essay on The Three Elements of the Female Athlete Triad The Three Elements of the Female Athlete Triad For an increasing number of women in the United States, a concern or preoccupation with body weight and size is a constant pressure. Female athletes, like most women in our society, are also often pressured to conform to certain ideal body sizes and shapes, as dictated by the entertainment and fashion industries. Female athletes, however, face a twofold pressure. They face the burden that our culture places on all women to be thin, but they also face the burden from coaches, parents, and other athletes to succeed in sports and look good doing so by maintaining an unrealistically low weight. When weight gain means removal from a team or elimination from competition, many female athletes turn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This term refers to a wide range of abnormal behaviors, the extremes of which are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, but also includes limiting caloric intake, skipping meals, using diet pills, and many other pathogenic weight control behaviors. Having stated these limitations, there are a number of studies which do in fact indicate that female athletes struggle more with eating disorders than average females. Studies report that the rate of disordered eating among female athletes may be as high as 62% in certain sports (Yeager, Agostini, Nattiv, and Drinkwater, 1993). While a study of college female swimmers found 15.4% were affected, a study of college gymnasts showed that 62% of collegiate female athletes had seriously abnormal eating patterns. Smith (1996) found that disordered eating is most common among those in appearance sports, such as gymnastics, ballet, figure skating, equestrian sports, and diving. However, disordered eating behavior can be seen in other sports in which appearance is not as important, such as tennis, swimming, and running. Skolnick (1993) also notes that another study of 182 female athletes, who participated in a variety of college sports, found that 32% showed disordered eating patterns. Margot Putukian, MD (1998) reports in Clinics in Sports Medicine that a study of college athletes found 32% practiced some form of pathogenic weight control behavior, and 70% believed their behavior was harmless. • 36. Title Ix And Female Athletes Essay Title IX is a federal law passed in 1972 guaranteeing girls and women access to equal sports opportunites as boys and men. Title IX in athletics is a very controversial issue that has opened up the world of athletics for millions of women all across the United States. Although it is a win for women athletes, it has created an issue for male athletic programs sufforing from the effects of Title IX. This literary review shows the phenomenon of Title IX and how it affects participation in female sports. It shows the contriversy of Title IX opening doors for female athletes and "closing" doors for male athletes. It also explores the discrimination still in affect towards women in all sports. It also explores the issues Title IX rasies in both male and female sports. For years sexual discrimination has plagued women in both the public and private spheres, and has not allowed sufficient growth for women to reach the same equal level as men. The fight for equality amongst the sexes has been an ongoing battle for decades, and there are people who say sufficient progress has been made for women and that no other implementations must be made or that digression should take place, while there are many activists who continue to push for more of a change. Title IX was created and set into place in order to eliminate sexual discrimination in all areas of education and programs, especially in the area of athletics. • 37. Gender Bias : How Men And Female Athletes Are Treated... Venitia Kennedy SOIC 1306 Dr. Kim Murray April 23, 2014 Gender Bias: How Men and Female Athletes are treated Different in Sports. What is the first thing that pops up in your head, when you think of professional sports? Does soccer, basketball, softball, tennis, or baseball cross your mind? All these sports have one similar element, which is that all these sports are predominantly played by a single gender. Being a female athlete in middle school and high school, I can tell you that a lot of organizations do not look at male athletes and female athletes the same. In today's world male sports have no competition when it comes to female sports. Many people in the media and society feel that woman athletes are not a source of talent in today's sports. Which is not fair. Female athletes dream to become a professional player, just as well as male athletes. Just by my personal experience, statistics, sports channels and other information, you can see that women's sports have very little importance. When it comes to women in the media they do not get represented very well and they tend to be poorly portrayed as well. Men are the largest consumers, players, and of sports. So media focus more on male sports and athletes. This may be the reason women are advised not to be engaged in sports and how their gender is presented in the media. Some people think that if more women participate in sports, the media would be fairer. In today's society, the media focuses more on women's looks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Summary: The Rise Of Female Athletes Billie Jean King, Val Ackerman, and Richard Nixon, when first looked upon may seem to be three unrelated people lacking connection, however under the light of the fight for women equality and the unexpected rise of female athletes, they carry a much stronger association than one might think. In fact, the signing of Title IX, the enactment of equal prize money at Wimbledon, and even the beginnings of the WNBA stand to be crucial factors to lead to the rise of female athletes. To start off with, the misconception of women being less important, less intelligent, less strong, and less anything in the comparison of men is an outdated notion that stood to be true in the eyes of many. The idea that women were inferior to men lead to unfair rules ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Female Athletes And Professional Sports Essay Women in professional sports fits into the Sex and Power: Global Gender Inequality class because many female athletes have experienced the inequalities in a professional sports setting. Female athletes are being put down by gender inequalities, causing less females participating in athletic programs. Women athletes are being paid less than their male counterparts. Along with being paid less, female and males are receiving unequal benefits in the form of scholarship, media coverage, transportation, and stadium conditions. The professional sport's world is filled with the obsession of body image and sexuality. Through this obsession, female athletes have been abused from the people they trust the most. There is an increasing inequality in women's professional sports in the form of pay, sexuality, and abuse. Twenty –seven Division I colleges participated in a study where researchers found male athletes received almost six hundred dollars more in scholarships than female athletes and coaches of male teams earned around 190,000 dollars more than coaches of female teams (Kenschaft & Clark, 2016: 355). To earn almost 200,000 dollars more for coaching males instead of females, is only contributing to the sexist theories of women in sports. We wonder why so many female teams cannot find strong coaches but they are all headed to coach the men's teams to receive more money. The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team received two million dollars for winning the 2015 Women's World Cup, while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Female Athlete Triad Essay The female athlete triad is a health condition in which active women experience three inter–related disorders due to unhealthy body weight and eating habits. In the case of the triad, the word active refers to females who display moderate to high intensity levels of performance. The rate of performance must be high in order to counterbalance the decrease in calorie intake. Females who perform at a high intensity are at risk for the triad since they do not take in enough calories to fulfill the amount expended. The three disorders within the female athlete triad are osteoporosis, disordered eating, and menstrual dysfunction. Not all females experience all three of the conditions, however new data has indicated that even having one or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Low bone mineral density can result in stress fractures within a female's body (6). Female athletes with menstrual dysfunction often display low levels of the reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone. When the levels of these hormones are low, it is difficult for bones to retain calcium which causes a gradual loss of bone mass. It has been proven that when comparing amenorrhic athletes to athletes with regular menstrual cycles, the bone mineral density if reduced by 14% in amenorrhic athletes and 27% in regular athletic women (7). All three conditions result in serious health and body conditions which can decrease a female's ability to participate in physical activities. The female athlete triad is considered to be a significant health concern. In relation to the female athlete triad, some women are more prone to the condition than others. Sports that emphasize performance based on weight specifications increase the prevalence of the female athlete triad. Women who participate in sports such as ballet, figure skating, gymnastics, diving, and other aesthetic component sports have a higher risk of developing aspects of the female athlete triad in addition to women who participate in sports that involve weight classes such as tae kwon do, judo, wrestling, rowing, and equestrian (6). Most female athletes who participate in either high–intensity or endurance exercise have a greater chance of developing the triad. Studies have shown that women who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
