Mariel starts the lesson introducing Jazmine as a guest. She speaks in
English and when it is necessary, she uses Spanish. Excellent balance!!
She has good rapport with students and what is very important, she
smiles at them when she talks with them. Very good!!! Specially at this
age, having a teacher who usually smiles is quite interesting.
She has prepared excellent activities to promote intercultural
exchange, all the students show enthusiasm and high interest in the
activities. All of them want to participate and guess where Jazmine is
from.
Mariel shows teacher stance, she asks for silence when it is necessary.
She keeps control of the whole group.
Jazmine speaks very slow and clear so students can understand
everything. They are really interested about her life. The ask her if she
2. is a famous actress, if she is millionaire, what money they use and
some other questions.
The students are sitting in two lines mainly, there is only one girl who
is sitting alone. When I ask her why she doesn´t sit with the rest of
the students, she answers that all her classmates hate her.
Mariel knows the students´names. She has group management.
After Jazmine´s presentation, she explains the activity that they have
to do. The instructions are in English and very clear. She gives
examples. All of them participate with enthusiasm, except Ludmila (the
girls that suffers from bullying) and it seems that Mariel doesn´t realize
about it. Although, once the girl asked her, “y yo seño?”
When the class finishes I talk with Mara and Mariel about this case of
bullying, although this was the last class they teach there. We must
never ignore a case like this one. Besides teaching English, we are
helping them to build their identity as responsible and tolerant citizens;
they need to learn to show solidarity with other people. And all we
talked about after class, and our role as teachers.
The activity is motivating, when they do not know a word, for example
“pepino” Mariel repeats it many times. Suggestion: it is also better if
you write it on the board.
While Jazmine and Mariel are with the project, there are two boys at
the back doing the test from the previous class. (Mara helps them).
Suggestion: I think that we may always prioritize the learning of new
knowledge, this was an excellent intercultural project that helped them
create a new vision of the world and of other cultures. So, I think that
they could have participated in the project and in the following class,
they could do the tests. Surely, it is not the only grades that the mentor
teacher has about their learning process, mostly, if we consider
assessment as a process and not, as a unique instance.
3. They want to sing a happy birthday song in Spanish and Mariel tells
them that they can sing it but if they do it in English. Very good
intervention!!! Well done!!
Finally, Mariel hands in the test, corrected by her, and Mara hands in
some presents.
It was a really nice class. Congrats to the three of you.
As pedagogical partner: she was very active, she was always paying
attention to what Mara or the students needed. She helped Mara to
deliver the tests and the presents.
