Final Reflection on Secondary Practice Period

This period of practice, I made in the Secondary school Nº 03, “ 7 de Marzo”. This
school is located in the neighbourhoods, for this reason most students have
problems attending school, because they work or help their parents in the care of
their siblings.
The course in which I made the practice is 4 year, the teacher of the group is Nadia
Robledo. In the course there are 16 students. One of the strength of the group, is
they have the book and most of them participate and make the activities in class.
At the individual level, the differences among the students are more noticeable
given that some students have more proficiency language than others. Therefore,
they have more facility to solve the activities and understand them than the rest.
One weakness that most of the students present is as they work or have to take
care of their siblings, they arrive late to school or don’t go.
Therefore, since they have a high number of non-attendance to classes. This is a
real problem because they have difficulties on the next class to understand and
continue with the topic.
For this practice the teacher asks me if I can continue with the book, that they are
using, Engage 1 Ed. Oxford, in the chapter 8. The topics of the practice was natural
vocabulary, and disasters in simple past. For teach this topic I used videos and
images, these motivated the students to introduce in the topic, for then make the
activities in the book. In the third class I present a game the feel enthusiastic to
play a game, but they didn’t like having to ask and answer in English, they
preferred to do it in Spanish, because they felt more comfortable.
In the first two classes the students do not want to speak loudly because they felt
inhibited by the recording of the class. the teacher encouraged them to speak on
repeated occasions, but they said they felt ashamed to mispronounce the words.
Although I explained to them that they weren’t being evaluated with the video, it
was a very uncomfortable moment for them. When I stopped recording, they
participated actively in the class and worked the two hours of class. So, the teacher
congratulated me as it is a group that struggles enough to keep working the whole
class.
In the first and third classes I took them an activity on a piece of paper and they
have to order the words and made simple past questions. The students really enjoy
this type of activities and participate in them all.
For the first class I took pictures of the natural vocabulary, for this activity I looked
for images of the area so that they are familiar with the students. And it was easier
for them to understand the concepts, since they were places, they knew. They
really liked the activity.
This last period was different from the other periods of practice. Of course, I felt
very nervous at the beginning as in the other periods. But then I felt different, I felt
more comfortable, although the students were shy and didn’t want to participate
much in the class.
The positive and negative aspects of this period.
The positive aspect was the help that the teacher gave me, with her advice to make a
better lesson plan. I felt comfortable with the students and the school, because I
worked for three years as a substitute teacher, so I knew the headmistress, the
teachers and the students. This practice is my opportunity to thank the school
community for its accompaniment in the daily work of teaching.
The negative aspects are, first, the time, I had to work hard to work with the
stipulated times, I was really uncomfortable given that I'm not used to putting a
certain time to each activity, I prefer to give them the time for students to work at
their own pace Learning. Another aspect is to continue working with the
pronunciation and my grammatical errors that I must correct when I am teaching.

What you needisa passionfor learning,and The heart toloveeverystudentthat entersyourclassroom.” (taken from: we are teachers.TeresaKwant) This period of practice, I made in the Secondary school Nº 03, “ 7 de Marzo”. This school is located in the neighbourhoods, for this reason most students have problems attending school, because they work or help their parents in the care of their siblings. The course in which I made the practice is 4 year, the teacher of the group is Nadia Robledo. In the course there are 16 students. One of the strength of the group, is they have the book and most of them participate and make the activities in class. At the individual level, the differences among the students are more noticeable given that some students have more proficiency language than others. Therefore, they have more facility to solve the activities and understand them than the rest. One weakness that most of the students present is as they work or have to take care of their siblings, they arrive late to school or don’t go.
  • 2. Therefore, since they have a high number of non-attendance to classes. This is a real problem because they have difficulties on the next class to understand and continue with the topic. For this practice the teacher asks me if I can continue with the book, that they are using, Engage 1 Ed. Oxford, in the chapter 8. The topics of the practice was natural vocabulary, and disasters in simple past. For teach this topic I used videos and images, these motivated the students to introduce in the topic, for then make the activities in the book. In the third class I present a game the feel enthusiastic to play a game, but they didn’t like having to ask and answer in English, they preferred to do it in Spanish, because they felt more comfortable. In the first two classes the students do not want to speak loudly because they felt inhibited by the recording of the class. the teacher encouraged them to speak on repeated occasions, but they said they felt ashamed to mispronounce the words. Although I explained to them that they weren’t being evaluated with the video, it was a very uncomfortable moment for them. When I stopped recording, they participated actively in the class and worked the two hours of class. So, the teacher congratulated me as it is a group that struggles enough to keep working the whole class. In the first and third classes I took them an activity on a piece of paper and they have to order the words and made simple past questions. The students really enjoy this type of activities and participate in them all. For the first class I took pictures of the natural vocabulary, for this activity I looked for images of the area so that they are familiar with the students. And it was easier for them to understand the concepts, since they were places, they knew. They really liked the activity. This last period was different from the other periods of practice. Of course, I felt very nervous at the beginning as in the other periods. But then I felt different, I felt more comfortable, although the students were shy and didn’t want to participate much in the class. The positive and negative aspects of this period. The positive aspect was the help that the teacher gave me, with her advice to make a better lesson plan. I felt comfortable with the students and the school, because I worked for three years as a substitute teacher, so I knew the headmistress, the teachers and the students. This practice is my opportunity to thank the school community for its accompaniment in the daily work of teaching. The negative aspects are, first, the time, I had to work hard to work with the stipulated times, I was really uncomfortable given that I'm not used to putting a certain time to each activity, I prefer to give them the time for students to work at
  • 3. their own pace Learning. Another aspect is to continue working with the pronunciation and my grammatical errors that I must correct when I am teaching.
