Ultra high definition television (UHDTV) provides a significant increase in resolution compared to HDTV. UHDTV has 4 times the resolution of HDTV with 3840 x 2160 pixels, while 8K UHDTV has 16 times the resolution of HDTV at 7680 x 4320 pixels. UHDTV also improves on color reproduction and increases the standard frame rate, making it more suitable for 3D content. However, UHDTV requires much greater bandwidth for transmission and new equipment that is not backward compatible with existing HDTV systems. While the technology and infrastructure are still being developed, UHDTV is expected to eventually become the new standard for television.
