The internet of things starts with your things – The devices that you’ve come to depend
on. By 2020, it is estimated that nearly 50 billion devices will be connected to the
internet, storing and transmitting massive amounts of data in real-time, and transforming
how we live and work. Here are five fast facts about the Internet of Things.
1
It Started 16 Years Ago
Kevin Ashton, one of the co-founders of MIT’s Auto ID Center, coined
the term “Internet of Things” in 1999. That organization has been highly
influential in trying to develop globally recognized standards for the
connectivity of devices.
There Is Room to Grow
According to Cisco, only .06% of things that could be connected to the
Internet actually were as of 2014. That means that 10 billion out of the
1.5 trillion things that exist around the world are currently connected.
The Human Factor
The number of things connected to the Internet first exceeded the
number of people on Earth in 2008.
10 Percent
In 2012, only 10 percent of cars were equipped with Internet connectivity.
Experts estimate that by 2020, 90 percent of cars will be connected to
the Internet.
25 Billion
That is the number of devices that collect and store data every day.
Experts believe the figure will double in the next 5 years. By 2018, mobile
data traffic will exceed 15 Exabytes—that’s 12.7 million years of online
video streaming per month!
