Lighting or illumination is the deliberate
use of light to achieve practical or
aesthetic effects. Lighting includes the use
of both artificial light sources like lamps
and light fixtures, as well as natural
illumination by capturing daylight.
Ambient lighting
Task lighting
Accent lighting
General or ambient lighting is intended to
light up a room in its entirety. It provides
a uniform level of illumination throughout
the space independently of other lighting
sources.
Moreover, its purpose is to ensure safe and
easy traffic, as well as to create an overview
of the room. The ambient light ‘bounces’
off the walls to illuminate as much space as
possible.

lighting:

Ambient Outdoor Lighting
Lighting
Outdoor lighting is usually installed in order to ensure visibility and increase security around a
building. It is also recommended to light up the exterior of the building, entrances and stairs to
reduce and perhaps eliminate the risk of injury that can occur when entering and leaving the
building.

Task lighting illuminates the tasks a
person carries out in a given space such as
reading, cooking, computer work. A
brighter light is required in a smaller focal
point of the room for these sorts of tasks.
For a more pleasant illumination, it is
often best to avoid harsh lights or lighting
that casts troublesome shadows. It is also
practical to install a single switch for focal
lighting, independent from the room’s
overall lighting switch.

Accent lighting is used mainly to focus on a
specific point of interest or to achieve a
desired effect. This type of lighting gives the
impression of a larger room. It is more
frequently used to highlight an architectural
feature, a plant (in outdoor layout), a
sculpture, or a collection of objects.
As a general rule, effective accent lighting
requires the installation of three times more
light on the focal point than ambient lighting
generally provides.

Reflection: Reflection is the return of light after hitting a surface. The angle, from
normal, of the light on its return path is the Angle of Reflection. The Law
of Reflection dictates that when light hits a smooth surface the angle of
incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
Absorption: Absorption happens when a material only reflects or returns a portion of
the light that hits it. Even a mirror is not perfectly reflective, so some of the
light radiation is absorbed by the material. The measure is the
absorptance.
Dispersion: the process by which people or things are spread over a wide area
Characteristics of light
NEXT
Transmission: Transmission of light is the moving of electromagnetic waves (whether
visible light, radio waves, ultraviolet, etc.) through a material.
Propogation:
The Rectilinear Propagation of Light describes that Light travels in a Straight
Line. A mirror changes the direction of Light that falls on it and it travels in a
Straight line Path. Reflection of Light occurs when light bounces off a polished
surface.
Scattering: Scattering of light is the phenomenon in which light rays get deviated from its
straight path on striking an obstacle like dust or gas molecules, water vapours
etc.

10 Lighting Design Considerations
Lights can seem like a simple decision if you don’t overthink it, but when you
consider all of the different aspects that go into making a workspace well-lit, you
see just how complicated the process may be. Here are a few lighting design tips
and concepts to consider when choosing office lighting:
Light Distribution and
Brightness
Conservation of Energy
The Appearance of the
Space and Luminaires
Glare
The Appearance of Color
Lighting Control and
Flexibility
Lighting of Faces
Cost of Implementation
Installation
Maintenance
