3. IMPORTANT DESIGN ASPECTS
To foster students sense of community and individuality.
To ensure flexibility and adaptability for changing programs and enrolments.
Design spaces to meet the specific needs of students, teachers and administrative staff with
disabilities.
Design for future flexibility, which enables spaces to be easily modified.
FUNCTIONAL
ACCESSIBILITY
A school building that is attractive.
The exterior should compliment the neighborhood and reflect the community’s living.
The interior should enhance the learning process.
AESTHETICS
4. Make daylighting a priority especially in classrooms
Ensure superior indoor air quality.
Ensure thermal comfort. “Right size” HVAC systems to keep humidity in the comfort
zone.
PRODUCTIVE
Providing safe schools should be a priority.
Maximum visual access to corridors and school grounds.
Accommodate safe exit from the building in case of emergency.

Designing sustainable, high performance green stock.
Use energy, water and other resources efficiently.

6. Design a school for 1800 students.
Consider 0.9 sq.m. per student with 40 students per class for primary school
1.11 sq.m. per student with 35 students per class for middle school
1.2 sq.m. to 1.5 sq.m. per student with 30 students per class for secondary and high secondary school.
Classrooms should be well ventilated.
Classrooms should be in any one side of the verandah instead of on either side of Verandah.
Consider Verandahs on South and West directions.
Consider Ventilators on East and North directions.
Consider Library design at a rate of 3 sq.m. per person or for a strength of 10% of the strength of the school.
Library should be away from Parking area, Play ground and Assembly hall
Consider Gymnasium near playground or Play area
Minimum dimension of a Gymnasium should be 15m x 7m excluding changing room and toilet block

7. Minimum Dimension of Principle’s office should be 10 – 15 q.mm
For Staff Room consider area of 3 sq.m. per teacher excluding the cupboard of storage areas.
PRINCIPAL OFFICE AND STAFF ROOM
Separate Parking should be provided for
1) Students (includes School buses, bicycles and others)
2) Staff (includes two wheelers and four wheelers)
3) Visitors (includes two wheelers and four wheelers)
Area must be decided as per vehicle (consider area of 2 m x 1m per two wheeler) and (consider area of 3m x
6m per four wheeler)
Area also depends upon the number of students and staffs.

9. SITE AREA DESIGN ASPECTS AND CONSIDERATIONS
Ground Coverage should not exceed 40% of the site area. (As per JDA By laws)
Front and Rear Set back should be at least 9 meters. (As per JDA By laws)
Total FAR should not exceed 2.00. (As per JDA By laws)
Total Height of the building = 1.5 x(width of the front road ) +Front set back (As per
JDA By laws)
The rest 60% of the site area should include :-
• Parking Space,
• Circulation along with entrance and exit
• Guard Room and other extra services
• Sports field
• Landscaping
