Divorce Myths and Misconceptions - Part IIStephen Beiner
Contemplating divorce is emotional and difficult, made all the more confusing by well-meaning friends, family, and co-workers who offer “advice.” Learn more about divorce myths and misconceptions in this presentation.
Although same-sex couples now are able to obtain dissolutions of their marriages in many states, there are still complicating factors facing divorcing LGBT couples. Some of these factors include different tax treatment, division of pension plans, child support, custody issues and the rights of married vs. unmarried same sex couples.
Regardless of where u live though, you have several options on how you choose to proceed with divorce and child custody/visitation issues, You can file for divorce yourself, hire an attorney to represent you in court, or go ti mediation with your spouse, California law requires you to include a parenting plan when you file for divorce.
Remember, the choices you make now will impact the emotional and financial well-being of you and your children for years to come.
21 Days -- The Naked Divorce PresentationAdele Theron
The Naked Divorce aims give people hope and a clear proven structured step-by-step programme to recover in 21 days, with the support of highly experienced and trained Divorce Angels.
The simple fact is, with the tools and techniques available today, and with the right structured approach and support, recovery takes weeks – not years. And it’s a tragedy that people suffering great breakup pain don’t know this.
And so we’re on a mission to create a movement that helps tens of thousands of people around the world recover from the emotional trauma of divorce in as little as three weeks. Our programmes have been developed using proven trauma techniques that have been in existence for over 100 years as well as a breakthrough new scientific approach giving individuals access to those techniques in the comfort of their own home.
More than one-third of marriages end in painful divorce. But the choices you make during divorce will influence your child's health and well-being over a lifetime.
The stakes are high. Kids from divorce families often experience higher rates of teen pregnancy, more diffilulties in school, and challenges in their own marriages. Two of the biggest predictors? The amount of conflict between you and your spouse and the amount of support from friends and family.
Several same-sex couples applied for a marriage license in various states only to have their application denied or their license revoked by a subsequent court decision. Learn more about same-sex marriage and divorce in California in this presentation.

Case StudyBecoming a forensic psychologist after graduating from.docxtidwellveronique
Case Study
Becoming a forensic psychologist after graduating from Ashford with a psychology degree will be an exciting part of my life. Graduating from the psychology program at Ashford means I have the skills necessary to move forward in my career goals. I am now able to read and think critically and creatively, communicate effectively through my speech, writings, and through the use of technology. I now understand the various forms of diversity, the interdependence among living beings, and the environment and humanly-created systems. I am able to direct service of meeting the needs of others, develop the skills and abilities that provide for lifelong learning, as well as I now have the ability to draw information from different fields of study to make informed decisions (Ashford University, 2014). Having a psychology degree means I can analyze human behavior and their mental processes, as well as analyze theories of continuing education in psychology and related fields. I can evaluate theories of personality development and psychology research methods. I can now demonstrate communication behaviors that are consistent with the study and practice of psychology, as well as have and use skills and concepts that are fundamental to the ethical application of psychology (Ashford University, 2014).
I as a bartender deal with personal challenges all the time when I hear people tell me their problems and I want to try to give them advice. Many times I get told things regarding my brother and his girlfriends’ issues at home and I want to help but it’s an ethical struggle for me. The reason for the struggle is that I work with my brothers’ girlfriend and my advice could be biased. From my point of view the problem is that my brother and his girlfriend don’t have good communication. The problem from what they can tell is the other person doesn’t listen or doesn’t care to listen. The options I see it as they can either try to sit down with an unbiased person to help them communicate effectively or they can end their relationship. The risks and consequences are that they may end up expressing feelings that are not ready to be dealt with, or they could end up with a really strong relationship. The other risk and consequence could be that they end up in a huge fight and the relationship is over. The only evidence I have to assist me is what they both tell me about the situation and what I have personally seen.
With this case I would be able to think critically and creatively, I can analyze their behavior and their mental processing, as well as demonstrate communication behaviors. I will look at how they are trying to communicate now and think of other ways they can try to communicate such as text or email. Maybe even writing each other letters. I will analyze their behaviors as to how they perceive the other person and the way the other person comes across while speaking. Through better communication skills the couple will be able to better discuss their i ...

Introduction
• Is lay Christian counseling helpful or dangerous?
• Can we expect an average person without a master’s
or doctoral degree in counseling to be able to meet
the needs of someone plunged into depression or
wracked with indecision by some complex problems
in life?
• Lay counselors are “individuals who lack the training,
educational experience, or credentials to be
professional counselors, but who nevertheless are
involved in helping people cope with personal
problems” (Gary Collins, cited p. 14)
• Lay counseling is present in churches, para-church
organizations, mental health settings, Christian, and
secular
The Need for Lay Counseling
Ministries
• Psychological problems are
increasingly evident
• Christians are not trained to
handle difficult problems (i.e.
typical answer is “you’re a sinner,
just pray about it”)
• There are Scriptural texts that
support the use of lay counseling
Biblical Basis for Lay
Counseling
• Conservative circles are concerned about the
“seduction of Christianity by secular psychology”
• Every ministry must begin with Biblical and
theological basis, including lay counseling
• Two categories of Scriptural reference provide
biblical support for lay counseling ministries in
churches
– Calling of all Christians to be involved in ministry
(priesthood of all believers)
– All believers are called to be involved in ministry to one
another (i.e. people-helping by non-professionals and
para-professionals)
The Call to Ministry in General
(Priesthood of Believers, I Peter 2:5,9)
• Eph. 4:1-16 demonstrates God’s will for all
saints to be equipped for ministry or
service
– Unity of Calling: no clergy-laity distinction
– Unity of Ministry: each member of the body is
indispensable. We don’t have a ministry; we
are one.
– Unity in Common Life: (Eph. 2:5, 6, 19, 22, 3:6;
4:16); we are interdependent
– Unity in Purpose: ultimate goal is maturity in
Christ; ordained pastors should equip the
saints for ministry or service
The Call to Lay Counseling as a
Specific Ministry
• Mandate to show Christ-like love to one another (John
13:34-35) and carry each other’s burdens (Gal. 6:2)
• All believers are to admonish, encourage, or help one
another (Rom. 15:14; Col. 3:16; I Thess. 5:14)
• Some believers specially gifted with exhortation, or
paraklesis (Rom. 12:8)

S o c i a l J u s t i c e Words such as culture, race,.docxjeffsrosalyn
S o c i a l J u s t i c e
Words such as culture, race, and ethnicity are extremely prevalent in counseling today. Counseling
does not exist in a vacuum. We may sometimes feel that what is happening in the outside world is
shut out of the counseling room, but it is not and has never been. Counseling and therapy exists to
serve the needs of the people within our societies. We have all read, wrote, and heard about the
importance of advocating for our clients. For many people, counseling provides the only safe space
they may ever experience. Therefore, it is our privilege and duty to serve our clients.
Many clinicians believe that counseling should hold a neutral position. However, I beg to differ. First,
the most basic fact is that we all share in the human experience which connects us, whether we
choose to acknowledge this fact or not. The therapeutic process is also built on our abilities as
counselors to connect and empathize with our clients. This concept was illustrated with the creation
of Rogerian and existential therapies. Social factors affect all individuals and as such directly
influences therapy as neither clients nor therapists checks their value systems at the door at the start
of the sessions. Secondly, how do we help clients make sense of their experiences if they are
unable to process all of their experiences in therapy? We all experience our worlds through our
environments, relationships that we build, and stories that we create to make sense of our worlds.
Therapy helps us to examine our stories and make healthy changes accordingly. And lastly,
psychology and counseling, which is still heavily based on the medical model, has difficulties
incorporating client experiences which are largely internal and individualistic. Many of the theories
that are utilized are western, male-Eurocentric based and some of the diagnoses that are available
do not fully facilitate the cultural experiences of the clients.
Counseling has a long history of being heavily influenced by the dominant white male culture. The
models and theories were created around a particular cultural and racial identity and was not
inclusive of minority groups. Hence, the creation of multicultural groups to help counseling become
more inclusive and also to help counselors meet clients where they are socially, culturally, and
racially. An important recognition about counseling is that it possesses an inherent power dynamic
that may appear threatening to minority groups who are already uncomfortable with the counseling
process. Adding the fears and social stigmas about therapy and mental health only highlights groups
of people who critically need mental health services but are instead left underserved or unserved
because our profession and practices do not meet these clients where they are.
The ironic things that I have learnt about counselors are that our profession trains us to deal with
trauma and difficult conversations with clients .

10. Personal Reflection
I have learned that a faith-based counseling agency deals
with the same issues standard counseling centers deal with.
I also learned that everyone that had become counselors at a
faith-based agency were not looking specifically to work at a
faith based organization.
The counselor I interviewed stated that, “Honestly, I wanted
a job as a counselor at a well run, trusted organization with
well, trained therapists and administrators who operate
with integrity and the client and therapist's wellbeing at the
forefront. I wasn't looking for any particular faith-based
organization.” (Barr-Jeffrey, 2012)
11. Personal Reflection (con’t)
I have learned that you will have situations such as a
helping clients wrestle with sexual identity issues and as
a counselor helping the client truly is your first priority.
I have learned how much empathy and compassion play
a role in the field of counseling.
As a faith-based counselor you do not always talk about
religion and how it affects a clients life.
Faith-based counseling sounds like a road I may consider
looking into because I have a deep love for God and
people and as a Christian we are not to judge but show
the love of Christ.
12. Impact of Samaritan on the
Community
The community knows they have a organization of people that
genuinely love them, and will do what is possible to give them
help and closure.
Members of the community make donations to go towards
counseling for people who can not afford counseling
The community has someone they can consider as an
accountability partner.
I asked the the counselor I interviewed how he liked working
outside his office and he stated, “People do not live in a
counseling office so they need reinforcement in their lives from
places that matter to them and I love when I get the privilege to
"work" in those places.” (Barr-Jeffrey, 2012)
13. Impact of Samaritan on the
National/Global Society
The Samaritan Ministry is one of the largest providers
of professional counseling in the United States.

(Samaritan Center of Puget

14. Conclusion
If I had the opportunity to work at this organization I
would like to have the position of being a family counselor.
I have a love for working with children, and I believe that it
is important to have the parents involved, which is why I’d
like to work with families. I currently am a youth leader at
my church and I deal with many issues with young people,
and after interviewing Anthony he enlighten me that I
would be dealing with the same issues at a Faith-Based
organization and I think that is great. I want to be able to
give back to the community and at the same time let a
person know they are loved and their life is important.

Editor's Notes
Anthony has experience in conducting therapy with individuals, couples, families and groups. He has also conducted workshops on topics of Relationships, Spirituality and Boundaries. Anthony has also counseled clients for Premarital preparation, Parenting for partners and single parents. Anthony stated that he also has experience in conducting workshops on Stress management for leaders and managing intercultural dynamics for individuals and the workplace.
As a client you want to make sure that the staff is competent and knowledgeable of their job. Ethics always plays a major role in choosing a counselor or organization because you want to make sure that you have their trust and all your information is confidential, and that they will respect your wishes.
Members of the community also make donations because they want to be able to help people that need help and are unable to afford to pay the fees. Anthony stated that there are also schools, and other churches outside of the Center that conduct fundraisers to help raise money to fund the center so that it can stay open and available to the community.
All of these recommendations will help a human service professional give good service to their client. You may not use all of these skills with one client but one must realize is that you may end up using all of these skills during your career as a human service professional. One other factor that would be good to receive training in is working with people that have been in prison or mental institutions because you never know what type of client you may have that will walk in your office one day. It is important to be prepared and well rounded.
