This document discusses FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles for data management and describes an approach for assessing how well research data complies with the FAIR principles. The approach involves developing metrics based on the FAIR principles, an automated tool called F-UJI that assesses data using the metrics, and providing consultation to help data repositories improve their FAIRness over time based on the assessment results. The tool has been used to assess over 10,000 datasets across several data repositories. Challenges and lessons learned are also discussed, such as balancing machine-readable metrics with human aspects of the principles and ensuring assessments account for different types and contexts of data.
