2. Task 2: Idea Development and Planning U9 2.1
You could create a mood board of images related to your product. They could be inspirational or visually interesting.
Analyse what you have gathered.
Decide on content and think about how you will structure your piece – consider the conventions of your chosen
style/genre, think about the best methods to appeal to your audience.
Finally work out a production schedule for the project. Once you have a final proposal, begin to plan how you intend to
realise your project and what you will need to create/collect.
Planning will vary depending on if you are doing a web series, podcast or a fanzine.
Web-series: A script, storyboard, organisational docs and clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
Fanzine: Content outline, visual style, pagination, organisational documents.
Podcast: Script, organisational docs, clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
4. Content:
The content of my finished product will be an analysis of film music and how its inclusion in a scene can affect said
scene's tone or, in some cases, the film itself. To this end, I will be creating a two to three-minute podcast using a voice
recorder (which I will procure independently) that will study the complexities in great detail as well as how the thought
process behind the inclusion of an original score, classical music or even a popular tune goes into the creation of a
scene I.e. how the inclusion of Andy Williams' Happy Heart in Shallow Grave creates a sense of happy, yet twisted irony
following an endless cycle of deception and betrayal which eventually culminates in murder, and the thought processes
of the two lead characters still alive as an ending montage plays out. This podcast is primarily being targeted at
individuals of 25-30 years of age (young adults), but it will also be suitable for middle-aged individuals (30-60?),
teenagers (13-18) and senior citizens (70+). As I will be using music recorded by several prominent artists throughout
my podcast, and to avoid the embarassment of a potential copyright lawsuit, I will only play 30 seconds of each track
during certain intervals.
5. Planning:
Having ultimately decided to create a podcast focusing on music in films, the following things I will require in order to
bring my finished product to life are:
Script – A script is the key point in development of any product, as what has been written often determines the
direction the subject matter ultimately goes on, regardless of whether it is an audio-based or visual-based product. It is
also important to seek out inspiration during development, as this often helps to move the scriptwriting process
forward. To ensure a decent quality product, I will review the script regularly during development and make revisions
where necessary e.g. in speaking about how music can sometimes creates a feeling of unease during a certain scene, I
may wish to add a passage about how several pieces of music chosen for The Shining achieve this, particularly in the
scene when Jack wanders aimlessly through the hotel while Danny and Wendy wander through the maze adjacent to
the hotel.
While organisational documents and clearance forms are often required, depending on whether an individual needs a
location suitable to their product's needs as well as informing your organisation who is set to appear in it, I will not
require these assets, as I will be the only person working on the documentary throughout all stages of production.
6. Production Schedule:
Production Task 1: Create script for podcast and redraft where necessary.
Production Task 2: Complete revisions for script and start recording.
Production Task 3: Continue recording and, when finished, begin editing on Adobe Premier Pro.
Production Task 4: Incorporate tracks into editing mix and cut down by 30 seconds. Use the highlighter tool on
Microsoft Word to indicate cuts and/or changes to the script.
Production Task 5: Finish editing (post-production) and upload final product on to YouTube.
Production Task 6: Evaluate finished product.
