THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN

Objective
proof can be
physical
evidence, an
eyewitness
account, or the
result of an
accepted
scientific
method.
A fact is a
specific detail
that is true based
on objective
proof.
An opinion is an
interpretation,
value judgment,
or belief that
cannot be proved
or disproved.
An opinion is
created.
An opinion can often be identified
because the sentence contains biased
words. Biased
words express opinions, value
judgments, and interpretations. Often
they are full of emotion
opinion using words like always or
never. Other times a qualifier expresses
opinion in the form of a command as in
must or should.
What to do and what to watch for.
A FACT is information that can be
verified or
PROVEN. You can’t argue facts.
An OPINION is information that
CANNOT BE
PROVEN or verified. Opinions
are someone’s belief or personal
judgment. You can
agree or disagree with an opinion.
Fact
• A statement is a fact if you can answer yes to these two
questions:
• “Is it true?”
• “Can it be proved?”
An opinion statement can be well thought out but
can’t be proved true or false – it is always open to
debate.
Ask yourself:
“Does this statement tell a thought or feeling?”
“Would the statement be true all the time?”
 Fact
Is objective
Is discovered
States reality
Can be verified
Is presented with
unbiased words
Example of a fact:
Broccoli is a source
of iron.
Opinion Is
subjective
Is created
Interprets reality
Cannot be verified
Is presented with
biased words
Example of an
opinion:
Broccoli tastes awful
