This document proposes using multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antennas for spectrum sensing in cognitive radio to improve detection performance. It summarizes that MIMO antennas can increase the probability of detection and decrease the probability of missed detection of primary users. The document then reviews common spectrum sensing techniques and their limitations. It presents a cognitive radio algorithm that implements spectrum sensing using MIMO antennas with different antenna configurations on primary and secondary users. Simulation results show the probability of detection increases and probability of missed detection decreases with higher MIMO antenna diversity order.
