EXPLORING WEB 2.0

WEB 2.0
• Web 2.0 allows people to not only read information on the internet, but it also
allows the user to interact and collaborate in a social setting.
• According to Rosen and Nelson, Web 2.0 tools have three key characteristics:
• “User-initiated publishing of information without significant technical knowledge”
• “Social networking”
• “Online communities formed around specific content”
CYBERLEARNING
• I define cyberlearning as any learning experience that involves technology.
• According to our textbook, cyberlearning “is the use of networked computing and
communication technologies to support learning.” (Smaldino, Lowther, Russell &
Mims)
• Cyberlearning is important because today’s students live in a digital world. They are
“digital natives”, who are accustomed to using technology in their everyday lives. In
order to be prepared for the future, they must be equipped to effectively use
technology.
WEB 2.0 RESOURCE 1:
WIKISPACES CLASSROOM
• Wikispaces Classroom is a free wiki that I can create for my science class.
• Features of Wikispaces Classroom include:
• A newsfeed for discussions
• Making files accessible, such as classroom handouts or permission slips
• Creating assignments or projects with due dates
• My main goal of using Wikispaces Classroom is to improve communication with
both parents and students.
• Here is a link to my classroom: http://ccshandsonscience.wikispaces.com/
WEB 2.0 RESOURCE 2:
YOUTUBE
• YouTube is an online repository of videos on a wide range of topics.
• I like to use YouTube to show students videos of scientific topics that are difficult to
grasp. By including videos in my lesson, students that are more visual learners also
have a better opportunity to understand difficult subjects.
• For example, DNA is one concept that 8 year olds have a difficult time grasping. I do
an experiment where students extract DNA from a strawberry, but that still doesn’t
allow them to see the double-helix structure. By using a YouTube animation video,
students are able to better understand exactly what DNA is.
• Here is a link to a video I plan to use: http://youtu.be/4NegABEGTv4
WEB 2.0 RESOURCE 3:
TEACHERSFIRST WEBSITE
• The TeachersFirst website is a rich collection of lessons and web resources. This is a
great collection of information so that I don’t have to “reinvent the wheel”.
• For example, I teach a unit on habitats, which I would like to update and make more
interactive. Through the TeachersFirst website, I was able to find a unit titled
“Biomes of the World” that already has links to many web resources:
http://www.teachersfirst.com/single.cfm?id=172
CHALLENGES
• One challenge is finding free web resources that don’t contain ads. I’ll often find a
great YouTube video, only to have an ad pop up in the middle of the presentation.
• Another challenge I have is that my students do not each have access to a digital
device in my classroom; I am limited to activities that I can project to the class as a
whole using my laptop and a projector.
• Another challenge I may face is whether or not parents are willing to check the
Wikispaces Classroom page for information and updates. While most parents are
“connected”, it always seems that there are one or two parents who are not.
