With our motto being "surgery as a last resort," ensuring that surgery is only pursued when absolutely necessary.
2. ANESTHESIA
The patient is given general anesthesia
to ensure they are asleep and pain-
free during the surgery.
3. INCISION
The surgeon makes an incision in the
chest, commonly using a sternotomy
for traditional open-heart surgery.
Minimally invasive techniques may
also be used with smaller incisions.
4. HARVESTING GRAFTS
Healthy blood vessels, such as the
internal mammary artery (from the
chest) or the saphenous vein (from the
leg), are harvested.
These grafts will be used to bypass the
blocked or narrowed coronary arteries.
5. CARDIOPULMONARY
BYPASS (CPB)
The patient may be connected to a
heart-lung bypass machine.
The machine temporarily takes over
the heart's pumping and lung
functions, allowing the surgeon to stop
the heart and perform the procedure.
6. GRAFT PLACEMENT
The surgeon attaches one end of the
graft to the aorta, the main artery
leaving the heart.
The other end of the graft is connected
beyond the blockage in the coronary
artery, creating a new pathway for
blood flow.
7. COMPLETION & RECOVERY
Once the grafts are in place, the heart is
restarted, and the patient is taken off
the bypass machine.
The incision is closed with sutures or
staples, and the patient is transferred to
the recovery area.
8. RESTORING HEART HEALTH!
Bypass surgery improves blood flow to the
heart, relieves chest pain, and reduces the
risk of complications from coronary artery
disease.
Each case is unique, and the specific details
of the surgery are determined by the
surgeon based on the patient's condition.
