New Orleans: A City Under Water pt. I, II & III
This was the capstone presentation for our Global Warming project. We had the idea to compare two cities in the world. One city that the students were familiar with, Vigo, and another city of the same size that our auxiliar de conversación was familiar with, New Orleans.
New Orleans was the site of the 2004 hurricane Katrina natural disaster. The entire city is, and was, built under sea level. So, with a little bit of strong wind and rain, the city itself could be flooded very easily.
This presentation goes through the history and geography of the city, so that the students can more easily relate to the effects of Global Warming. At the very end of the geography section there are two really cool maps that use GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to measure what would happen if the global temperature increased and the sea-level rises. You should definitly check out the maps!
Global warming definitions_clil_ceip_pl_riadevigo_2017riaenglish
In this segment of our Global Warming project, we created definitions to define the causes and effects that our students had brainstormed earlier in the year. With dramatic pictures of Global Warming effects, we were able to show the severity of climate change.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Exploration of british-_culture-through_film_and_literature
1.
2. During our English classes at CEIP Ria de Vigo, we have attempted to offer a varied and diverse
exploration of UK culture. We have primarily done this through the study of two sources, both a
novel and a film.
The first term was dedicated primarily to the study of Billy Elliot. The film was used as a means
for further exploring and analysing various aspects of UK culture. We examined aspects of the
film, such as its portrayal of the British Class System, the events of the 1984 Miners´ Strike, as
well as the distinct dialect of North East England. Often pupils are exposed only to a certain type
of UK accent. We believed it important that our pupils be exposed to different regional accents
within the UK. Our study of the film also enabled us to consider more universal concerns such as
gender roles and social stereotypes. Watching the film, with subtitles and analysis, allowed for the
students to practice their listening skills. We thought it important that the pupils hear
more ´natural´and vernacular English as well as more formal varieties.
In the second term, we decided to study Charles Dickens´ classic and canonical novel, ‘Oliver
Twist´. We examined the often difficult life of those living in Victorian London, exploring social
issues such as poverty and child labour- a particularly pertinent topic considering the age of the
pupils. Studying the novel allowed the children to practice and improve their reading and
comprehension skills whilst reading an important work of English literature.
3. Improve the students´ English abilities, such as Listening, Reading,
Speaking, Writing and Interaction.
Exploring various aspects of British Culture.
Using films as an accessible introduction to British Culture.
Motivate students´desire to learn English.
Use the film Billy Ellliot to explore social and cultural issues.
Explore British History through the study of Oliver Twist.
Describe different characters.
Relate the activity to the Library Project, which deals about cinema.
4. The Task is addressed to all Primary levels,
especially to Grade 5 and Grade 6.
English was the LANGUAGE USED to carry
out the task.
The activities were made both in the English
and Art lessons.
5.
6.
7. Describe the gender stereotypes that are shown in
the film. Do you think that boxing is an activity for
boys or girls? Why?
Name 5 activities that you think are for boys, and 5
that you think are for girls.
Describe the struggles that Billy faces. What
obstacles does he overcome? What personality
traits does he demonstrate on his journey to
becoming a professional ballet dancer?
8. What´s Billy´s father´s job?
What does Billy want to do?
What doesn´t Billy want to do?
Who does Billy care for?
Why isn´t Billy´s father working?
Who are the Scabs?
Where is the Royal Ballet School?
What has happened to Billy´s mother? What
item has she left for him?
9.
10. Choose the right name for each description:
1. Nancy.
2. The Artful Dodger.
3. Bill Sikes.
4. Fagin.
5. Oliver Twist.
6. Mr. Bronlow.
11. The novel’s protagonist is an orphan born in
a workhouse. He is an innocent child, whose
true identity is the central mystery of the
novel. He lives a hard life, however was also
helped by wealthy benefactors.
12. He is the leader of a criminal
gang, who takes in homeless
children and trains them to
pick pockets for him.
13. Although she used to be one of
Fagin’s former child pickpockets, she
is one of the noblest characters in the
novel, who gives her life for Oliver
when Sikes murders her for revealing
Monks’s plots.

who was the first person that
helped Oliver. Besides, he is a
very sensible person, who

novel.

gang, who even treats Nancy
with cruelty.
