Summary of the project
This project purpose is to improve and promote sustainable
forest management for a range of ecosystem services through
the medium of FSC certification
ForCES (Forest Certification for Ecosystem Services) project is
supported by GEF (Global Environment Facility) with facilitation
from UNEP, implemented by FSC and partners in Chile, Vietnam,
Nepal, and Indonesia. Started in 2011 will run to 2015.

Why it matters?

Assumption that human consumption for natural forest is
reducing ecosystem services such as soil and water.
Thus, Sustainable Forest Management
providing higher ES values than non-sustainable
forest management.

What we seek in water service:
In Lombok, mechanism of payment for ES is already running.
Science-based verification to prove the impact of reforestation activities
on the quality and flow of water (rivers and springs)
Improving monitoring & evaluation methodology through
PES protocol
To help expanding existing paid water services to wider area in
Lombok where ForCES hopefully can shorthened
up the process

What we seek in eco-tourism:
Improving existing eco-tourism that has been running since 2010
Collecting data on biodiversity (orangutan, key/endemic fish
species), hydrology and tourism
Partnership with forestry service, national park authority office,
tour operator, local government
Prepare local community for FSC certification assessment

19. PILOT SITE 3: PT. Ratah Timber, East Kalimantan (95,000 Ha)

20. What we seek in biodiversity & carbon:
Help Ratah Timber maintain their FSC certificate and
implementation RIL (Reduced Impact Logging)
The assumption that Ratah has higher carbon sequestrian
and biodiversity value compared to the non-sustainable FMU
Working with Kyoto University to conduct biodiversity and
carbon assessment
