Executive Summary: Evelyn Wheeler
Graphics and Communications Intern, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department
Supervisor and Mentor, Teresa McAllister
Overview
As the Graphics and Communications Intern for the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department,
my main job was to communicate departmental accomplishments and announcements via several
mediums. Some of these include, but are not limited to, the TV monitor in Earle Hall, the Chemical
Engineering Facebook page, the Graduate and Undergraduate brochures, and banners along the hallway
of Earle Hall depicting outreach work, research areas, fellowships, and graduate descriptions.
On a daily basis, I would coordinate with my supervisor to be informed of new accomplishments within
the department, which I would announce using a template on Adobe InDesign. With an array of photos in
the shared drive and a short description of the award or event usually received via email, I would create an
announcement and resize the document on Photoshop to be acceptable for the monitor and for
Faceboook. I enjoyed creating the TV monitor schedules by rearranging the orders and setting dates and
durations for each post I made. This was something I typically did on a daily basis, but there were many
other things done throughout my internship.
My supervisor Terri coordinates events within the department as well, many of which I was able to help
with this semester. There was an AIChE conference in San Francisco in the month of November that I
created a pull-up banner for. I also designed from scratch three large banners for the Homecoming
tailgate this year.
Terri gave me specific jobs to do within the department, which often involved reaching out to students
and faculty for information. For example, when I created the brochures and posters and needed specific
information from people, I reached out to them in order to gain the proper information and print out the
posters for display in Earle. I am extremely proud of the way my posters turned out, as they are hanging in
the hallways and I receive many compliments on them.
Skills Gained
I have learned a lot about the Adobe Creative Cloud software. My classes are focused on these programs
as well, so I have been able to relate what I am learning in class back to what I have been doing in my
internship. My future classes will most likely require the same skills, and I am glad to have already been
able to develop them through firsthand experience.
Working in this department has allowed me to gain many communication skills. I have learned how to be
confident in my reaching out to others when I need certain information, and have thus made connections
and relationships within the department. I have enjoyed getting to know the faculty and graduate
students. Communicating with my mentor inspires me to seek constructive feedback and improve upon
my work at each possible opportunity.
Besides the communication competency, I have also gained collaboration skills. Genuine relationships and
positive interactions within the department have been so valuable to me in this internship. The network of
relationships I have become a part of within this department makes it that much easier for me to succeed
at my work. I also had a lot of contact with Campus Banner and Design for several of the banners and
posters I created. This gave me direct insight into not only the inter-departmental relationships that I
observed on a daily basis, but valuable campus-wide collaboration that exposed me to all the wonderful
programs we have on campus and are able to utilize in many ways.
Mentor Feedback
My mentor was extremely helpful and understanding throughout my journey as an intern. Though I have
experience with InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop from past and current Graphic Communications and
Communication classes, it is so much different when you are using these programs in a professional
setting. It was very comforting to have Terri at my side introducing me to all the different aspects of these
programs that she has found useful in the department. Terri reviewed my work always before it was
posted, giving me direct feedback and constructive criticism when necessary.
Terri was very accommodating to my school schedule, exams, and genuinely enjoyed hearing about how
my week was going or what I was doing the upcoming weekend. I think it is so important to have this kind
of honest and overall positive relationship in the workplace.
The Next Step
The internship was offered to me for another semester, but I will not be at Clemson in the Spring of 2017
due to a Study Abroad trip in Europe. Luckily, one of my fellow Communication Studies majors is perfect
for the position, and Terri has interviewed her and offered her my current position for the time which I am
gone. I hope to return in the summer, though the department is still working out a budget for a summer
intern.
If I am not able to work for ChBE this summer, I will no doubt search for another, similar internship. My
favorite part of this internship was working with event planning, so I have been inspired to pursue that in
a future internship. I thought it was fun to work with all the Adobe Creative Cloud software as well, so any
internship involving these programs really appeals to me as well.
