It started for me in 1979, my fascination with asteroids and Near Earth Objects. I
didn t have a telescope, or any knowledge of the cosmos, Asteroids, was a game I

better at this game than me, he was even better at Space Invaders . At the time I
hated space invaders, it made me feel so claustrophobic, and when the speed and

I would lay there in deep thought, if the sun gives us light, and it s in outer space,
then why is there eternal darkness in the night time sky, what did stars looked like
up close, do people lived on stars and other planets, how did people breathe in
space. These questions would go through my mind as I lay in the grass behind our

the garden street projects you had to have a good imagination, not because things
were bad, not in the 70 s, when I was young and didn t know any better, the garden

I needed a good imagination, so that I could block out all the noise, and all the

Every now and then, when I lay, I would see a fiery ball of light moving fast across

5. The Genetics Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
The Genetics of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common genetic disease fatal in children,
it is a severe and rapidly progressive muscle disease with symptoms that first become
evident due to the affected child showing early motor developmental delay; for
example, presentation of Gower s sign, a diagnostic indicator of proximal muscle
weakness characterised by the affected having to walk their hands up their body to
stand due to little strength being present in the lower limb.
By thirteen years of age the proximal muscle weakness is so advanced that the
affected will be wheelchair dependent, and as involuntary muscles (cardiac and
respiratory) grow more affected towards the age of eighteen, cardiomyopathy and
respiratory diseases are common and often cause death, with very few survivors past
the age of thirty and the average lifespan at twenty five.
The cause of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the occurrence of mutations in the
Dystrophin (DMD) gene. The cytogenetic location off the DMD gene is Xp21.2;
meaning at location 21.2 on the short arm of the X chromosome from base pair
31,119,219 to base pair 33,339,609. DMD is the biggest human gene currently
known and instructs for the production of a 427 kDa protein by the same name. The
dystrophin protein is part of the dystrophin associated protein complex which is
expressed at the sarcolema and anchors muscle cellcytoskeletons to the extracellular
matrix in skeletal and cardiac muscle,

primitive TASERs dates back to 1960 and they have come a long way since. Such as

In 1974 Jack began his work on his idea drawing inspiration from a book called Tom
Swift and his Electric Rifle. He first created a device that look like a flashlight. The
device used gunpowder to fire two prongs attached to wire up to 15 feet. Once the
prongs made contact the device pulsed 50,000 volts into the target causing
uncontrollable muscle spasms and effectively immobilizing the target without
killing. He came up with the name TSR, an acronym for the book in which he got
his ideas from, for his invention. Later he would add an a , making it the well known
name today TASER, to the name because he grew tired of saying the letters when
talking about his invention.
After filing for a patent on his device Jack tried to start selling his new invention.
However, the United States government quickly classified his invention as a firearm
because of the use of gunpowder. This classification severely hindered his sales but
he managed to sell to the Los Angeles Police Department. When efforts to use the
device to subdue Rodney King in 1991 failed Patrick Smith teamed up with Jack to
help improve the device. One of the major improvements was replacing the
gunpowder used to propel the prongs with compressed air. Without gunpowder in the
device the classification of firearm was dropped, making selling the device much
easier. This caused
10. The Pros And Cons Of TV Shows
When you ask people about their hobbies, many of them say something like, I
enjoy reading books and listening to music, or I like to watch movies. Watching
movies or, rather, TV shows has indeed become an extremely popular activity,
especially in countries where there is access to Netflix or other similar services. This
popularity is easy to explain: TV shows often offer products much more diverse,
intriguing, and non standard than conventional films. Shows such as True Detective,
Game of Thrones, House M.D. and many others have proved that such format is
definitely not inferior to regular movies; on the contrary, it can be superior to them at

Traditional programs for academic mentors and mentees are based on a seasoned
professional working with an in experienced teacher, and there is a plethora of case
studies and literature reviews on such mentoring relationships. The idea of
mentoring harkens back to Classical Greek literature wherein Homer introduces his
readers to the inept character of Mentor (Zellers, Howard, Barcic, 2008), so it is
with a sense of irony that the term mentor is used to describe the experienced
member of such a team. Nevertheless, the idea of mentoring is somewhat timeless
and therefore appears valuable to help new teachers acclimate to teaching because it
has survived so many years with little transformation.

Sethe is constantly reminded of the agony she lived through the person Beloved.
Ironically she is named after the child of Sethe, which gives readers the perception

the symbolism of the troubling time slaves went through of pain, death and torture.
Once Beloved came to 124 she brought the memories of Paul D and Sethe. Beloved

was looking for a supportive loving community. Even Beloved s name mentions
love, symbolizing the one feeling human freely can express to each other. Love also

modes that leave a lasting impression on the city s urban plan.
Streets throughout the centuries weren t just used as pathways to destinations, but
were also greatly used to display governmental and leadership authority to the masses.
For example, in Favro s The Street Triumphant , streets were mainly utilized for
triumphant parades in the city of Rome. Favro states how a parade prescribes a

For my breaching social norm experiment I was determined to do something I
would never do even if it was a dare, especially since my ability to interact with
strangers is not the best. So, I decided to make people feel uncomfortable by
holding their hand. What I would do is walk up to the person from behind and
slowly make my way to their handto make them feel even more uncomfortable.
People normally hold hands with their significant other, or with someone they
know like a friend or family member, so to be holding hands with a stranger is out
of the ordinary and awkward. In preparation to starting our experiment it took my
confidant Carla and I about an hour to finally initiate the first move. Before even
holding hands with strangers my mind was swirling with multiple questions and
thoughts, like Why am I even doing this? , I don t appreciate making people feel
uncomfortable. , Why is Mrs.Henry torturing me! , Can I just not do it? , and so
on. In addition to my thoughts and questions, I felt myself sweating and my
stomach felt as if it was in a twisted knot. While I approached my first victim I felt
the temperature of my body raise up to boiling point and the color of my skin turn
from snow white to lava red in a split second. To make things worse once I held onto
the lady s hand she was gripping onto mine and was holding on tight, and my reaction
was to laugh because when you are in an uncomfortable situation you honestly don t
know how to react.

18. The Most Vital Functions Of The Nervous System
The most vital functions of the nervous system is to provide information about the
occurrence or threat of injury. One of the ways this is done is in form of pain.
However, sometimes, established pain can go beyond its protective role, thus
becoming a disease in itself than just being a symptom. This condition is called
chronic pain. The injury or the precipitating event can be physical (like in case of
phantom limb pain or post surgical pain), infection (as with post herpetic neuralgia),
systemic disease (like with diabetic neuropathy), drug (chemotherapy induced
peripheral neuropathy) or can sometimes be unknown (trigeminal neuralgia, migraine,
cluster headache, etc.) Even today, the pathological processes involved in genesis,
establishment and continuation of such diseases are poorly understood. Eventually,
such painful conditions usually remain refractory to available treatments.
According to International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), globally, it has
been estimated that 1 in 5 adults suffer from pain and that another 1 in 10 adults are
diagnosed with chronic pain each year. Moreover, according to a recent (2014)
article in the Journal of Pain, chronic pain is the most prevalent and disabling
condition affecting at least 100 million Americans. It is also the most expensive
public health condition with annual cost to society exceeding that of combined costs
of diabetes, cancer, and heart diseases. Then, we have set of diseases that follow
chronic pain. This

The philosophical perspective and method called phenomenology was established by
the German thinker Edmund Husserl, who set out to analyse human consciousness.
He tried to describe the concrete world experienced by individuals and proposed that
consciousness is a unified unintentional act i.e. it is always directed to an object. In

A text offers much potential for the reader to reconcile all the possibilities to get a
clear unified sense. The reader compares different parts of the texts to gain achieve
this consistency, through the illusions that the text creates. This unity is not inherent
in the text but lies somewhere between the text and the consciousness of the reader.
Readers constructions of the same text will necessarily vary but within the limits
imposed by the written text. The reader is invited to exercise his imagination upon
those as yet unwritten and indeterminate elements. In the essay Iser states that with
the literary text we can only picture things which are not there; the written part of a
text give us the knowledge, but it is the unwritten part that gives us the opportunity to
picture things. Without the element of indeterminacy, the gaps in the text, we should
not be able to use our imagination . Readers require and impose consistent patterns

20. Odysseus Gaining Wisdom In Homer s Odyssey

Bittersweet Wisdom Confucius once said, By three methods we may learn wisdom:
First, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third
by experience, which is the bitterest. Confucius explains three ways to acquire
wisdom : by reflection, imitation, and experience. This quote can be connected to
Homer s, The Odyssey, where Odysseus uses his experience to gain wisdom. In the
beginning of The Odyssey, Odysseus, a champion and king, is called to adventure.
Odysseus must embark on a new journey in order to return to Ithaca and retake his
throne. During his travels, he faces many obstacles that prolong his homecoming but
in return he gains permanent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Odysseus does not tell his men many things and he keeps those secrets to himself.
In one example of the Odyssey, Odysseus is given a gift from the god of the winds,
Aiolos. The gift, a bag of winds, takes all the stormy winds and conceals them
inside a cowskin bag. Odysseus crew, curious about what is in the bag, decides to
open the bag and check what is inside. Thinking that there is gold and silver inside,
they greedily open it emanating a windy gale. Odysseus describes the opening of
the bag saying, A scandalous motion, but it was passed. They opened the bag, the
winds leaped out; at once a gale caught them, and carried them off to sea tearing
their hair as they left their native land behind. (Homer 113). A very scandalous
motion indeed for the island of Ithaca was visible to Odysseus and his me.
Odysseus is punished for his poor leadership. He does not tell his crew that there
are the stormy winds inside the bag, leaving his crew inquisitive. Odysseus also,
fell into a deep sleep... (Homer 112) which gives the crew freedom because there is
no supervision. This flaw gave Odysseus the wisdom of responsibility. Odysseus
acts as the leader and tells his men what to do. Unfortunately, Odysseus s men still
disobey him on Thrinacia. The men take all of Helios cattle and they feast on them
although Odysseus had already warned the men. Odysseus, having learned from
poor leadership, said, My friends, we have food and drink in the ship, so we must
keep our hands off these cattle or we may suffer for it. (Homer 144). Odysseus
learns but his crew does not gain any wisdom. Odysseus tries to take leadership by
warning his crew but they were all too greedy. Under the circumstances, Helios
called upon Zeus and terror struck upon Odysseus men leaving only Odysseus alive.
Odysseus gains the wisdom of responsibility after learning from his flaw of poor

On March 6, Michelangelo was brought into this world by his mother, Francesca di
Neri del Miniato di Siena, and his father, Ludovico di Leonardo Buonarroti Simoni,
in Caprese, Italy in 1475. His mother pasted away in 1481, when he was just six
years old; during that time, he was placed with a family of stonecutters. Later on
Michelangelos father realized that his son had no interest in the family business,
therefore, at the age of 13, he engaged to the Florentine painter s workshop. There
he was introduced to the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, and he was exposed to the
technique of fresco. When Michelangelo was 21 years old, he arrived in Rome on
June 25, 1496. On the fourth of July of that same year, he began to work on the over

It was known as one of the world s great masterpieces of sculpture, and it was
finished when he was 24 years old. Michelangelo s Pieta is now displayed at the
Vatican City, in St. Peter s Basilica after being moved over 5 times while it is six
feet wide and nearly as tall. He returned to Florence in 1499. He took over the
statue of David, which two sculptors had previously attempted, but left him
unfinished. Michelangelo responded by completing his most famous work in
1504. David stands 17 feet tall and it stands on an 8 foot pedestal. In 1505, he
Michelangelo was invited to come back to Rome by the Pope Julius II. He was
given the job to build the Pope s tomb, which was to include 40 statues and be
finished in a total of 5 years. Although he worked on it for 40 years, it was never
truly finished to his satisfaction. During that same time period, in 1508, Michelangelo
painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It took him approximately 4 years to
complete. The composition stretches over 500 square meters of ceiling and contains
over 300 figures. He revealed the finished work on October 31,
22. The Science Fiction Tale The Last Question
The idea that one day consciousness may spread throughout the universe has been
considered seriously by physicists. Sir Martin Rees, the Royal Astronomer of Great
Britain, has written, Wormholes, extra dimensions, and quantum computers open up
speculative scenarios that could transform our entire universeeventually into a living
cosmos ! But will the mind one day be freed of its material body to explore the
entire universe? This was the theme explored in Isaac Asimov s classic science
fiction tale The Last Question. (He would fondly recall that this was his favorite
science fiction short story of all the ones he had written.) In it, billions of years into
the future, humans will have placed their physical bodies in pods on an obscure
planet, freeing their minds to control pure energy throughout the galaxy. Instead of
surrogates made of steel and silicon, these surrogates are pure energy beings that can
effortlessly roam the distant reaches of space, past exploding stars, colliding galaxies,
and other wonders of the universe. But no matter how powerful humanity has
become, it is helpless as it witnesses the ultimate death of the universe itself in the
Big Freeze. In desperation, humanity constructs a supercomputer to answer the final
question: Can the death of the universe be reversed? The computer is so large and
complex that it has to be placed in hyperspace. But the computer simply responds that
there is insufficient information to give an answer.

Biological agents are living organisms or products of living organisms, and can be
found everywhere. Although, they may be useful in life, they could also be source
of threat to human health (European Agency for Safety and Health at work, 2016).
They include bacteria, fungi and viruses and their metabolites, as well as parasitic
worms and plants. Biological agents can enter the body by absorption through eyes,
skin, wounds (needle stick injuries, bites from animals etc) or mucous membranes
and by inhalation. In a situation of favourable living conditions, fungi, viruses and
bacteria reproduces very fast within a short period of time. And some of these
biological agents can be passed from one individual to the other. Biological agents are

In the case of Hepatitis A, individuals can easily contract it from close contact with
infected persons or through ingestion of contaminated food or faeces (London

with individuals infected with Hepatitis A, such as nausea, lack of appetite,
abdominal pain, fever and jaundice to coma and death. This disease can be prevented
in the work environment through personal hygiene, good sanitation, and waste

can be transmitted through saliva, blood, vaginal secretions, semen and urine (LHC,
2005). It is a disease that can be in the infected individual s body without any
symptoms. In the United Kingdom, almost 50,000 of the hepatitis B carriers are
symptomless, while one third of the infected persons are without symptoms. One
third was affected by mild flu like illness and severe illness confronted another one
third for about six months with vomiting, jaundice, nausea, fever, fatigue and pain.
Hepatitis if not properly managed can lead to cancer of the liver or Cirrhosis. Due to
the fact that healthcare workers like pathologists, surgeons, personnel in emergency
departments, dentists and dental hygienists, laboratory workers and personnel in
labour and delivery are at increased risk of infection if they are exposed to the blood

While in this course, I have found myself becoming gradually more and more
drawn to the idea of media activism in relation to new media policy. The topic of
change and improvement means a lot to me when it comes to current issues in media
policy in general, and I found myself very intrigued by what Malcolm Gladwell had
to say about the laziness, easiness and security that comes with being an online
activist in this century. I sincerely believe that mediaactivism is not getting the credit
it deserves in a day and age where the internet is such a powerful tool to bring
people closer together to do outstanding things. This being said, there are several
arguments on either side of this debate on activism. In this paper I would like to take

By saying this, Rapping is arguing that television pays an important role in media
activism. But with this being said, who has control over information shared on the
television? Certainly the control is not in the individuals who are activists, but
rather is in the hands of corporations and the government. Media, in a way makes it
harder for activists to have their voices heard, and even taken seriously. Ryan goes
on to write Today, the mass media, especially TV are among the most important
institutions maintaining, reinforcing and reproducing existing inequities in power.
Since media controls the range of views to which audiences are exposed, media
coverage can obscure and can even reverse public opinion towards repressive
social policies (Ryan 7). This statement, indeed reinforces the idea that the media
controls views by swaying the public s opinion on political topics. For example, the
recent war in Syria has been drastically skewed when it comes to North American
TV media stations. Not only are we being told that troops going over there to fight
is okay, but we are also being told that Syrian refugees should not be allowed in
North America. This is quite a hot topic at the moment, and either way, you can see
how the media is often times completely one sided and biased. This, in my opinion
makes it very hard for media activism to take place, especially on television. The
internet is a little bit of a different story, because people can openly voice their
opposing views

Tz’u-hsi
The Disputed Reign of Dowager Empress Tz u hsi Historical record is not always
an accurate representation of fact. An example of this would be the long reign of the
Dowager Empress Tz u hsi, in which there were hundreds of documents written about
her life. These documents have been taken and used in the production of numerous
books, especially among Western historians. It was these early historians who have
established the widely accepted perspective that Tz u hsi hungered for power, abused
it, and retained it using any means necessary. This understanding is echoed today by
authors such as W.G. Sebald, author of The Rings of Saturn. There are many
differences between the accounts of the Western perspective and that of Sebald s,...

She then had three princes, who had acted as the late emperor s viceroys, charged
with treason and graciously allowed them to commit suicide using a silken rope
(147 8). This idea about her craving for power is reiterated with Sebald s claim of
the mysterious deaths of her son and pregnant daughter in law who seemed healthy
until the Emperor becomes old enough to rule without the Empress (148). Then the
Empress had them replaced by an heir who would be easier to control: her two year
old nephew Kuang hsu (148). Sebald described the second emperor, Kaung hsu, as
being fascinated by the mysteries of modern machines (152). Although this may
seem like a minute detail, Kaung Hsu s love of modern machines is a
representation of his favor for modernization. It was this interest in modernization
that eventually led to a great disagreement with the Empress (152). Once it was
clear that Tz u hsi would deny the nation of Kaung hsu s ideas of modernization,
Kaung hsu attempted to wrest power to himself and was stopped by the Empress
(152). The Empress then imprisoned Kaung hsu in a moated palace (152). Once
the Emperor was confined, the Empress would be able to rule uncontested for as
long as she lived and as long as the Emperor was powerless. To keep the Emperor
powerless, Tz u hsi made sure that he stayed isolated for ten years until the late
summer of 1908 when he started having chronic headaches and backache, renal
cramps, hypersensitivity to

A mirage is a naturally occurring optical phenomenon in which light rays are bent
to produce a displaced image of distant objects or the sky. Mirages appear at very
low viewing angles, when you are far away. As you approach, the viewing angle
increases and the mirage disappears, or moves farther away. The reflection of heat

A weather satellite is used by meteorologists to gather information about the weather.
Weather satellites give meteorologists a view of weather patterns over a very large
area. This enables meteorologists to track large weather patterns and make more
accurate predictions of future weather behavior.
15) How do computers help weather forecasting?
Using computers in meteorology helps weather forecasters analyze the atmosphere by
drawing weather maps separately for each of several atmospheric levels. Then the
computer can put it all together and generate a prediction.
Can we just let the computer tell us what the weather will be without human
28. Rawls Social Inequality
Furthermore, the second law of the John Rawls Theory of Justice states that social
and economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are both (a) reasonably
expected to be to everyone s advantage, and (b) attached to positions and offices
open to all (60). No doubt, John Rawls second principle of justiceestablishes social
equality in the society and opens the door of opportunities to every single
individual, who wants to rise from his/her present miserable situation. But this law,
disrupts the socioeconomic balance in the society. In this case everybody wants to
be in higher positions to be reputed in the society and no one wants to be a poor or
miserable. Rawl is suggesting an equal distribution of wealthamongst the people to
relish the freedom and equality. It disturbs the monopoly and make an imbalance in
the economic growth of the country. For example; Andrew Gibson, in his political

People like stories that contain much action and adventure. Such stories are real
exciting and fun to read. The Hobbit By J. R. Tolkien is able to convey a great story
through its characters, thematic elements, and literary features. There is something
however, that is able to have a major effect on a story. That is supernatural events.
These events are something within a story that the common audience would not
firstly expect to occur. It is of these happenings that make a story that little more
interesting and fun to read, as these events are able to change a story majorly.
Supernatural events are able to be associated with numerous things in stories. Such
events that are out of the ordinary are to leave readers in wonder why it happened.
Also, how such event occurred can be of question too. In The Hobbit, there is a
character who is a prime cause of some of the supernatural events that occur in the
story. That character is Gandalf, a friendly wizard who s magic powers is able to
help the dwarves. In Chapter 6 of the Hobbit, there was a disturbance in the Misty
Mountainsforest area. This area is usually peaceful. What is this uproar in the forest
tonight? Said the lord of eagles (Tolkien, 96). Surely, something awry was likely to
occur. And of course, the suspicions of something going on in the area were correct.
The goblins then encircled all the dwarves and the forest caught fire. All except
Gandalf were trapped. It was up to Gandalf to save the dwarves. Gandalf,

Canada is experiencing a rapid growth in aging population and it is not going to slow
down anytime soon. In 1851 there were about 65, 000 seniors in Canada and the
number in 2014 is 5.57 million.[1] In 2036 the elders will be over ten million and by

Many believe that the aging population is a big crisis. Aging population does put
pressure on the government limiting financial resources particularly in the
healthcare system. Half of the healthcare system is used by seniors and it is
expected to grow. (In text citation) Another economic impact is the rise in taxes. If

Medicine During the Elizabethan Era
The medicinal practices and problems of the Elizabethan Era were very important
to the people, although they are very different from those of today. There were
many different beliefs and diseases, like the Plague. Medicine was not an exact
science and was related to Alchemy (Chemistry). Here, some of the many practices
and beliefs of the Elizabethan Era will be discussed.
One of the most widely known and important of the beliefs was the humours. It was
believed that every living creature was composed of four elements, the humours.
They were blood, phlegm, choler (or yellow bile), and melancholy (or black bile). It
was believed that the overall total combination of these four elements determined ...

Alchemy (Early Chemistry) was another science closely related to medicine. Alchemy
was the name given to this science in Latin Europe in the 12th century. It was a
belief that the human body was closely related to the stars and the heavens. Over
hundreds of years, the main goals of alchemists were to turn any metal into gold
and discover an elixir which could cure all ills or lead to immortality. This magical
elixir was called the philosopher s stone. Alchemy was based on the belief that there
are four basic elements fire, earth, air and water and three essentials salt, sulfur and
mercury. The metals gold, silver, copper, lead, iron, and tin were all known before the
rise of alchemy. The liquid metal, mercury, and the burning rock, sulfur, were also
known. Many processes with these elements were known to alchemists. The art of
alchemy was heavily spiritual. Alchemists were the first to try out different ideas and
experiment with different elements, but because of their intense metaphysical and
spiritual beliefs, they didn t develop modern day scientific methods.
Alchemist studied alchemy for hundreds of years, but they didn t

reported to have 706 languages while Papua newgunie has 867 languages. Mostly,
the 700s languages in Indonesia is in the eastern Indonesia in which Silzer and
Heikkinen (1991) in Purwo, K. (2000) reports that 240 of the languages are in Irian
Jaya. A number of the languages in the world are in danger if there is no effort to
maintain the language. UNESCO reported that 10 languages are dead every year .
Purwo further explains that in Australia in 18 centuries, there were 250 languages
and today, there are only 20 languages left. A language can exist if the speakers of
the language are more than 100,000 people. If we consider this condition, in
Indonesia, there are 109 languages, not Java, which have less than 100,000 speakers.
Those languages spread in Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Maluku,
and NTT. In Lampung, according to Gunawan (1994) cited in Purwo, K. (2000) there
are 1,500,000 speakers of Lampung language,
41. School To Prison Pipeline Essay
The School to Prison Pipeline is a national trend wherein children are funneled out
of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems ( School to
Prison Pipeline ). This phenomenon brings children into the juvenile justice
system at a very young age. An article published in the journal Urban Education
explains that, The school to prison pipeline contributes to the atmosphere of
increased surveillance of schools including police presence in schools, zero
tolerance policies, physical restraint tactics, and automatic consequence policies,
resulting in suspensions from school (Martin, Beese 2015). By increasing police
presence in schools, children are more likely to be searched, questioned, or
targeted by police than they would be without police present. And as a result,
children are far more likely to be subject to school based arrests the majority of
which are for nonviolent offenses, such as disruptive behavior than they were a
generation ago ( School to Prison Pipeline ). For example, if a child was
misbehaving in class in a school that had a police presence, they could possibly get
arrested and sent to prison. But if a child was acting the same way in a school that
did not have any police presence, they would not be arrested. Police would most
likely be present in a school in an urban environment or poor neighborhood because
more crimeoccurs in urban and poor places, so in theory, by placing police in
schools, they would be preventing any crimes
