The Institute for Local Self-Reliance invited local officials, communities fighting waste incinerators, and both clean energy and waste management advocates, to join a webinar exploring our latest report on the economic and environmental impacts of power-generating waste incinerators.
The webinar –– which was hosted on Wednesday, January 9th at 1:00PM CST –– covered incineration as an issue connecting waste management and energy sectors, drawing from ILSR's Energy Democracy, Waste to Wealth, and Composting for Community Initiatives. The session dug into the implications of classifying this process as “renewable" and outlined ways to combat this aging, dirty industry and alternative strategies to support more equitable, economic, and sustainable local solutions in both the waste and energy sectors.
Presenters:
Marie Donahue, research associate with Institute for Local Self-Reliance's Energy Democracy Initiative, presented the results of the team's December report, Waste Incineration: A Dirty Secret in How States Define Renewable Energy.
In addition, Donahue was joined by allies Aiko Fukuchi from GAIA, a worldwide alliance whose ultimate vision is a just, toxic-free world without incineration, and Mike Ewall, Founder and Executive Director of the Energy Justice Network, a national support network for grassroots community groups fighting dirty energy and waste industry facilities. These two speakers provided additional perspective and on-the-ground strategies communities can use to fight dirty incinerators.

The range of sources and the statements made indicate a growing and open acceptance of climate change and the need to take action.

The more Americans try to produce consumer products, the bigger their problems are when it comes to waste disposal. After using a specific product, there is a high possibility that it will go to waste even if it has not reached its complete life cycle yet. This applies to residential, commercial and industrial trades. In addition, not all waste is safe to handle without the help of professionals.
Hannah Light Deep Dive - Iowa
Des Moines Water Works, Iowa's largest water utility, filed a lawsuit against three rural counties seeking to limit nitrates from farm fields flowing into drinking water supplies. Nitrates from agricultural runoff pose health risks and force the utility to spend over $1 million annually removing them. While most farmers have implemented voluntary conservation practices, nitrate levels have risen dangerously close to federal limits. The utility argues for increased regulation to comply with clean water standards, but farmers and county officials prefer collaborating to improve water quality through voluntary conservation efforts rather than regulation. There is disagreement over whether increased regulation of farm runoff is needed or if giving voluntary efforts more time could prove effective.

Over 99% of plastic is made from fossil fuels, and greenhouse gases are emitted at every stage of the plastics life cycle. Yet, even as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that “climate change is widespread, rapid, and intensifying,” big brands like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestlé (including BlueTriton, formerly Nestlé Waters North America) are increasing their production of single-use plastics and packaging—driving a petrochemical expansion that threatens the global climate as well as communities and ecosystems around the world.
The September 2021 webinar featured Judith Enck, President of Beyond Plastics and former Regional Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under President Obama, who discussed the nexus between plastic production and climate change, including the immense environmental justice impacts, and Graham Forbes, Global Project Leader of the Plastic-Free Future campaign at Greenpeace, who discussed Greenpeace USA's new report, The Climate Emergency Unpacked: How Consumer Goods Companies are Fueling Big Oil's Plastic Expansion. So often tales from students, parents, and colleagues establish legend and lore about our classroom teachers, providing an incomplete picture of the landscape of teaching and learning in our schools. How might we accurately view that landscape ourselves and, with others, construct and understand a truer map of our pedagogical system? Learning walks are a means to "hike the pedagogical topography” in schools while leveraging simple tech tools to better map that landscape.
Possibilities to Practices II
This document summarizes Derrick Willard's experience integrating iPads and social media into science instruction at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina. It describes how he has used digital tools like collaborative blogs, digital notebooks, note-taking apps, and formative assessment tools to move from a paper-based to a more paperless approach across various science courses from tropical ecology to AP Environmental Science to Science 8. The goal has been to promote creation, collaboration, and moving beyond just substituting digital tools for paper-based ones to truly transforming instruction using the SAMR model of technology integration.

Derrick Willard and Matt Scully from Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina discuss how the iPad is changing science instruction at their school. They implemented iPads in various science courses from tropical ecology to AP Environmental Science. This allowed them to go paperless, use digital tools for collaboration and projects, access content on demand, and use formative assessment apps. They found the iPad helped promote productivity, note taking, projects presented on Apple TV, digital lab notebooks, and collaborative blogs. The iPad is helping bring 21st century skills like digital learning to the science classroom.

3. Transitioning to a low-waste society requires reducing and reusing materials to minimize pollution, following principles like industrial ecology that mimic natural cycles.

Keystone and Foundation Species 2011
